My "kid" was told they couldn't order off childrens menu

Personally I think it's ludicrous to force anyone, child or not, to order and pay for more food than they'll eat. No wonder this country is overweight. I hate to waste food so I am stuck with either wasting it, paying adult prices for a child's portion, or stuffing my face. It's insane. :upsidedow Getting penalized for trying to be healthy makes no sense to me. :confused3 The mark up on food is very high so please don't tell me they'll lose money by honoring the requests of those wanting to simply not waste and eat less and not get screwed over while trying to do so. ;)

Off soap box. :goodvibes

I totally agree.

I went to WDW with my sister in June. We quickly learned that we needed to order ONE meal and share it. While we did order enough adult beverages to exceed any 4 plate meal ( :scared1: ) , no one was bothered by this. The portion sizes at WDW are totally obscene. And I enjoy a good sized meal!! It was really crazy. We wasted so much food, we both felt pretty sick about it.

As for the OP-er. I think if you are willing to pay, there should not be a limit to what you wish to order on the menu. In cases with children, even 15 year olds, can be picky. It could have been the grilled cheese or nothing. I am glad you were able to cut a deal, but also agree the hassle was silly.

After reading this thread, I'm hoping that Hollywood Brown Derby will be OK with my dd (12) ordering a kid's meal and with me ordering the cobb salad (technically an appetizer, I think) for lunch. We'd both order desserts, too. We are paying OOP for the lunch.

In the past, the only time I encountered a kid's meal issue is when dd wanted a burger at WCC and they didn't let us use an adult dining credit for it so I had to pay OOP for her meal. I thought this was crazy since we were saving Disney money by asking for a less expensive meal, but this was dd's birthday meal and I didn't want to make a big issue of her meal so I paid for it OOP. Otherwise, dd has been able to order off the kid's menu when she wanted to o so.

We always order the Cobb salad as an entree. It is huge and can actually be split. DD and I have determined that we will do this next time, because 2 cobbs is way too much for the 2 of us. I also like the mushroom soup (she doesnt like it), so I'll order that before the cobb. They also bring us a basket of bread and this is a huge, heavy lunch for us. WATCH the desserts. Most of the BD dessert menu is available at Starring Rolls cafe, for less money (Grapefruit Cake:goodvibes Yum). I'm usually so stuffed, I can't do the cake right away.

I totally agree.

I can only imagine the amount of food that gets tossed. Like a PP said, she doubts that family of 8 is really going in and ordering 8 kids grilled cheese with water.

I agree that the portion sizes at WDW are ridiculous. :thumbsup2

Many of our local restaurants will let anyone order off the kids' menu, but they will charge separately for the drink if the person is over the kids' menu age. I don't have a problem with the policy at the Plaza, but it certainly could have been handled better by the server and the manager.

DD12 ordered off the kids' menu without issue a few times last year at Disney if she wasn't very hungry or didn't like the adult offerings, but we didn't eat at the Plaza.

I have eaten pretty much everywhere, and I will disagree that the portion sizes are ridiculous. Some restaurants serve large portions, but there are many that do not. In fact, the portion sizes have been shrinking over the past couple of years, and some of them are getting quite small.

Before anyone thinks I'm a giant, I am not. I am a petite 5 ft 4", approx. 120 lb person, who does not have a big appetite. I don't find all portion sizes at WDW to be ridiculous, nor obscene. It really depends upon what restaurants you are eating at, so making a blanket statement that they are all huge, may confuse some first timers who are reading through this thread.

Just my two cents, Tiger :)

The only reason I could see an issue would be at places that offer the same meals on both the adult and kids menu, but one at a reduced cost. I don't think this ever occurs at Disney though, except for maybe some CS, does it?

Sometimes I just want a grilled cheese, sheesh.

I only read the OP. If they wanted a grilled cheese and the kids' menu was the only way to get that, I think they should've let it go because there were 2 others ordering off the adult menu.

BTW, I can't stand the Plaza's service. We had a bad experience there and I won't go back.

The price they charge for food in WDW is ridiculous!! If a person wants to order off a kids menu and get the portion that comes with the kids meal who cares? If the server made that big of a deal than the tip would be reduced.

I think it's ridiculous that the Plaza wouldn't allow your kids to order off the children's menu especially when you were paying OOP. A few years back we went to the Calif. Grill and my preteen at the time didn't like anything on the adult menu (we were on the DP). Without even asking, the waiter suggested she just order from the kids menu & that he would have the chef double the amount to equal an adult portion which worked out great. Don't see why some places are quick to accomodate while others are not.

Regarding the Jersey comment....not sure what was being implied. We have pretty much always gone this week (going again this year during this time) and prefer this time over any other time of the year!

Whether the rule is stupid or not isn't the point--it's their rule. Instead of complaining about the one experience where the restaurant decided to enforce the rule, why not quietly be grateful for all the times you were able to get away with breaking the rule thereby saving money?

With regard to your complaint about your WDW loyalty not being recognized, I agree that it's frustrating. But that's how Disney has always run their business. I guess that because of the demand for their product, they don't need to give frequent visitor incentives. We can all always complain to the company or take our business elsewhere.

To me, they are huge. A serving size of meat is supposed to be 3 oz. A 10 oz steak is 3x that plus a starch/side which is double the recommended serving size and a vegetable of some sort. Then add the rolls or whatever bread is served with the meal even if you have just one or a slice. That's about 5x the amount we require which seems ridiculous, again to me. :goodvibes

Ok I am not trying to be a b or daft at all, but it says for ages 9 and under. Maybe instead of presuming places will do this for you, why not just ask if they can do a certain sandwich or meal in a smaller portion or start off by asking, can you p lease do this, I don't mind paying an adult price:confused3. I'm not sure what youre mad about

Yes, this could have made their day even more interesting. You could have started with the club sandwich, asked them to add cheese, hold the meat and veg, and then throw it on the grill for a few minutes - voila! Grilled cheese! :rotfl2:

I don't know why more places don't offer an adult grilled cheese sandwich. If they are offering sandwiches then they should have bread, butter, and cheese - it's kind of a no brainer. I like the occasional grilled cheese sandwich, especially if I've been having a lot of rich and heavy food and want something light.

I understand that they may not want to sell cheaper child meal options to adults - but if they have something on the child menu that you want, I don't understand why they can't create an adult size portion of the same food if that's what you want to eat.

This is an interesting read thanks. My niece is 12yrs and could not BE any more fussy with her food. She sticks to hot dogs, pasta and nuggets! I have no doubt she'll want to order from the kids menu when we eat out in Disney. Perhaps I will warn my brother to say upfront - happy to pay extra for drinks / dessert etc. but she won't eat from the adults menu so please can she order from the kids menu. He would also be prepared to pay for an "adult" portion if needs be.

Thanks!

It's their restaurant so it's their rules.

I have to agree with this one. Going into the situation you are aware of the regulations and the guidelines. Just because you tried to negotiate around them and didn't get things completely on your terms doesn't mean the restaurant is at fault, regardless of what took place at other establishments.

I don't agree with baggage fees on specific airlines, but I don't call to argue those when purchasing tickets. I shop around and find others that fit the needs of my family. We do the same when we book reservations at the many different restaurants in WDW.

...awaiting the flames.

Why would you order a 10oz steak? I believe most menus give you the size of steak. I don't eat steak, specifically because the portion size is too big for me - frankly, anything over 1oz of steak is too much for me! Steaks are are a bad example though, as most restaurants give larger portions of steak. Although I do remember my DD's steak at California Grill to be only a few ozs., so if that restaurant let you order a kids' portion, that might be an option for you too.

Other meals, as I've mentioned, are getting small. The sides are getting very small (especially steamed veggies or whole grain rice), and some of the chicken, fish or lamb portions are too. Some of the soups are ridiculously small too - $5.00 for a small cup/bowl of mostly broth. No thanks!

As I've said many times on these boards, just because a meal has different components to it, it doesn't mean you have to order them all, and if you feel you must, it doesn't mean you have to eat all of that food. I frequently don't order food that I'm not going to eat, and so my portion sizes are just fine. As well, in relation to this thread, all WDW owned restaurants allow for kids' meals to be a la carte, which means you only have to order the items you want. We frequently don't order dessert for our kids - they don't need an ice cream sundae for lunch, so I am grateful that option is there, as I only get charged for what they eat, it saves on food wastage, and it keeps reasonable portion sizes.

And I'm also very selective about what I order, but after having eaten pretty much everywhere on property for the past 10+ years, I would not paint all of Disney restaurants as serving ridiculous portion sizes, as that is just not true. They may be too big for you, or me (as I mentioned with my steak example), but they aren't all huge across the board.

And so, in relation to the OP's thread topic, some of the portions are large, and can be shared between children or adults, but some are not large enough to be shared, so ordering kids' meals may be the right amount of food for that particular child. In regards to getting a different item, I have found that most restaurants are pretty accommodating and will make special requests, like a grilled cheese sandwich. It does depend though, as some restaurants are a bit picky. We eat at Plaza all of the time, and my kids share an adult sandwich, as this is better for us, as they like the selections better. We can do this as we pay cash most of the time, if on DP though, this might be an issue, as mentioned in this thread.

Tiger :)

Let's agree to disagree Tiger. :goodvibes I think they're ridiculous and you don't. I don't really care who agrees and who doesn't.
