My justification for NYC prices :)

Hi all,

my family (2a1c) booked the June 15, 2012 NYC 2 night cruise to nowhere ... for $1926 (tax/fees included) for a Cat 5c Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah.

At first glance, $1926 sounds steep :scared1: ... especially when other cruise lines offer cruises to nowhere for cheaper. The way I see it, is that the price is comparable to a weekend in NYC: :thumbsup2

here's a sampling of prices for a June weekend in NYC (i tried my to make appropriate comparable choices):

2 June weekend nights at the W Times Square : (small rooms, nice view) -- 359.10 + tax /night x 2 = $834.19

Friday Broadway show for 3 people (back orchestra, not front row): 150 x 3 = $450.00

Saturday Broadway shows for 3 people (average price mezzanine level, not orchestra or front row): $132.75 x 3 = $419.25.

That's $1703.44 right there, and we haven't even eaten yet! :lmao: Add SIX meals plus other snacks and room service all day ... and compare that to a family of 3 having the same amount of meals in Manhattan ... surely that would add up to more than $200. Not to mention Oceaneers club ...

and the most important thing ... the Disney touch :wizard: which you can't put a price on. :goodvibes

I know I know, i'm sure many of you will have issue with my comparisons above, and can find cheaper hotels, etc ... but overall sounds pretty worth it to me.

Good comparison. Bway shows are definitely steep and the food isn't cheap either. Oh and to get into a club here is crazy and no kids clubs!:lmao:

I love the numbers. The DW adn I were doing the same type of calculating when we were trying to decide on Hawaii

Enjoy your trip and keep us informed

You're not getting a full-length Broadway show on DCL. Two DCL shows together are still shorter than one on Broadway.

Wouldn't it be SO awesome if the Disney Cruises out of NY actually put on a Broadway show? That could be exclusive to the NYC cruises...even the cruise to nowhere! I can list a TON of shows I'd love to see in NY that we haven't had a chance to, not to mention shows I'd see again if I could (thinking Wicked and Billy Elliot!) They could do a family matinee of Mary Poppins or Lion King and then an evening performance of something more suited to adults. I love the idea!

I did an apples-for-apples price comparison on the 5 day to Canada we've booked with a 5 day on the Dream (same dates, even!) and the NYC cruise is about $700 cheaper for our category. So I was able to easily justify that the cost was not excessive.

The 2 day cruises to nowhere, however, are very high for 2 days when you consider your price is just $700 less than what we're paying for 3 extra days. BUT BUT BUT I think it's a simple matter of you're paying a higher price, albeit justifiable, simply because it is shorter. All the people processing and cleaning, luggage moving, etc., is there for every cruise; it just spreads out to a lower per day price over a longer cruise length.

So, I don't see anything wrong with it!

Your comparative analysis makes sense - for out of town visitors to NYC. However, it weakens if the cruisers are from the city or within reasonable commuting distance of it. Chop out the hotel expense and even with parking or train fare the "deal" on DCL becomes much less attractive.

Why justify anything? If you want to do it, just do it. It's your money and only you can decide how to spend it. I have no issues with your comparison, it's none of my business what you spend your money on. Thanks for sharing. though.

Sometimes people post what they do because they hope others will agree with them - thus affirming their choices.

I wouldn't spend almost $2000 for a weekend in NY, but I also wouldn't book the 2-night cruise to nowhere.

Wow. Thank you for making assumptions about my motivations for posting. Personally, i post on discussion forums to start or to participate in discussions. Thank you for your point of view.

I like the comparison. For me, I justify the July Cruise to Nowhere because I didn't think I would ever get on a Disney cruise ship. I am a bit nervous on the water and didn't want to chance spending a ton of money and then not enjoying it. Our family generally spends a weekend or two away each year (Boston, Wash DC) and this is somewhat comparable to one of those weekends. So this will be one of our weekends away next year.

You used the word "justification" in the subject heading. Are you trying to convince others or yourself that you made the right decision? As Raspberry Beret said, it's your money and your business how you spend it.

I think you're right. My wife and I recently went on a 3 day long weekend to NYC. We stayed at the W New York, saw 2 shows (Wicked and American Idiot), went to a few nice restaurants (Bar Americain and 21 for lunch, and Babbo and Artisanal for dinner), and we spent way more than $1700. But it depends on what you're looking for, as I don't think NYC vs a Disney cruise is apples/apples. But if money is the deciding factor, then I agree the cruise will probably be less expensive than NYC (in fact, you probably could spend an extra day in NYC, have the best of both worlds, and still come out ahead).

I'll say, we discuss money here all the time. Disney cruises especially because there are much cheaper lines out there.

Op, Im glad you worked it out for your family!

We are booked for Aug 2012. I wont get the LV or the red-bottom shoes next year!:rotfl:

I am living in Miami FL but after 4 years in NYC and my DH is still in NYC working and we looked into going out on the 2 day on the DCL next July and I was like NO WAY I can do so much more in NYC with my $2000. We go off on our 1st DCL in 2012 in May on the Dream 3 day....

In the interest of giving the NYC sailings an "authentic" local flavor, DCL has engaged the services of Crazy Eddie, a famous New York icon. He is now acting as their spokesperson in local promotions for the sailings. Here is the first press release announcing this new, dynamic marketing partnership:
