Both of our supervisor and boss both indicated to us workers that we are lucky to be able to take vacation time when we request it. Are we that lucky? All of us (3) eat lunch at our desk so we are available, stay late if they need us to, etc. etc.
Where I work people are allowed to take their earned vacation when they wish too... but we ask for the courtesy of advance notification at least equal to the number of days planned to be absent... and assitance with organizing the workload/preplanning backups so that deadlines are met etc. It works well and makes planning much easier for ALL involved.
It's been my experience that everyone pitches in to help others - so that when they need it... support is there for them too.
If I have two employees who want to take the same time off, if it results in overtime costs, I ask them to work it out between them. Sometimes we can do it, sometimes we can't. If they can't work it out between them (they usually do), the one who requested it first gets it. Just about everyone gets vacation when they request it, though.
we are asked for our vacation scheduled in january for the whole year. You can take vacation at other times with advanced notice but we are limited to 4 people in my particular job that can be off at a time. That really only becomes an issue around holidays - day before or day after holiday.
I personally seniority should have something to do with it. but they go by when you ask for it and if too many people want off it goes by if you had it off in prior years you will be the one not to get it.
There are 6 people in my unit, all have 4 weeks vacation (over 15 years with the company) and most buy another week. We are asked around March for our schedules. The only time we run into problems is the week between Christmas and New Years. Last year 5 put it on their list! Management said since that is a slow week, 2 must be present. So it came down to seniority. Ended up that one person used all their vacation earlier, so the #5 person got to take it after all.
