DD14 was tired of the pink bow border in her room. So she got a great theme going and today was painting day. And it was going really well right up until we were shifting to the other side of the room I backed into the gallon of paint while spreading the drop cloth. Spilled the whole thing ONTO THE RUG. Now it's not a new rug, but it WAS perfectly ok. I feel SO DUMB. Now i only have one third of that gallon left. I guess I better buy another. The second coat is tomorrow. And what am I gonna do about that rug?? It's right in the doorway, so I can't put furniture on it. Or a a throw rug either cause the door is so close on the bottom to the floor. I'm thinking of cutting that piece out and piecing a contrasting one in, sort of like a welcome mat. Can't afford new rugs right now.

All I wanna do is sit and cry!!!! WWAAAAAAHHHH!!!

Awe, I'm sorry, sounds like something I would do. :( I don't have any clue what you could do to cover it but your idea to cut it out and put something else in there sounds like it could work. {{{hugs}}}

Thanks, Michelle! I just had a great laugh from the delivery room stories thread and I feel better!!

I actually did that once (red paint on beige carpet), and GOT IT OUT!!! I spilled the WHOLE gallon, too!

I used up each and every dry "rag" in the house to soak up as much of the paint as I could.

Then I mixed up soapy water (I used DW liquid) and poured it onto the spot (gently, and not TOO MUCH). This kept it wet while I soaked it up with sponges and paper towels. The trick is to keep it from drying until you get it all up. BLOT, don't rub. Well, towards the end, you almost have to rub, but avoid it as much as possible.

I just kept doing this until it was all gone.

It was amazing!!!

Hurry, you may still have a chance...

Got a shop-vac? Know anyone who does? Heck, RENT ONE!!!

Get the spot good and wet (a little soapy), and suck it up with a shop vac. You gotta have a neighbor that has one - doesn't everybody? If not, you can rent them.

Another idea just hit me, too: if it's still damp, you might be able to get it up using one of those "do-it-yourself" carpet cleaners you can rent at Home Depot and lots of grocery stores. If you go to Home Depot, visit (or call) the paint dept; I bet they have a good idea or two.

GOOD LUCK!

If you are too late to get the paint up, perhaps you could still do the throw rug. If the door opening is not large enough, you could "shave" a portion off the bottom of the door. This is what my uncle had to do when he had carpets installed over his hardwood floors.

How awful! You know, I've seen them do the thing with cutting out pieces of carpet & adding a different one on either Changing Rooms or House Invaders. It looked great when they did it. I seem to remember them saying not to be afraid to cut the piece a bit bigger than the hole for which it's intended. That may be an option if you can't get it out with the shop-vac.

Good luck & let us know how it goes.

Deb

Can you pull up a corner of the carpeting and check if its hardwood floor? If so you could yank the carpeting for now and make due with a throw rug or two?

Having worked in interior design before, this is more common than you'd think. They do sell a tool at the carpet stores that is sort of like a big exacto knife - it allows you to cutout the stained part of the carpet and then you can lay down another piece of carpet in its place. Do you have any extra carpet in that room, in the closets, perhaps - or under a piece of furniture where it won't show?

Now I do think you might be able to get this paint out, but you are going to have to scrub. Is the paint oil or water based? If its oil, use paint thinner, dump it on the carpet and get a scrub brush and start scrubbing. If the paint is still wet it works much better, but it will work if its dried too. Mop it all up with towels, or a wet vac if you have one.

If the paint is water based, you can use nail polish (acetone) remover to dry and get it up. Just keep blotting it with towels and rinse with warm water.

Good luck Dorothy!

If you're going to have to cut the bad area out, why not cut out other areas too, and make it a motif kind of thing. If you could make a shape that goes with her theme, in a contrasting color to the existing rug, it might look cool.

That is terrible But it may not be a lost cause. What type of paint was it? water base?
Murphy's oil soap does wonders on paint! Really! I use oil paints all the time on velvet, theorem painting and when I make a mistake I use it and with patients it takes it out.
First you need to get as much of the paint up as you can. Keep the paint area wet, dry paint it very hard to remove. Then wet the area if need be and pour the Murphy's over it and work it into the area change your water a lot. Rent a rug shampooer and suck up the water. You may be able to get the paint stain out. Good luck
Oh when using Murphy's make sure to use a lot of water in the rinse and I usually will make the area around it just a wee bit wetter if not an oil mark can happen.
Also if you keep it damp you can call a rug cleaning company they may be able to help you too

Well, funny thing is the "theme" of the room is dots. We got wallies that are uneven sort of circles, a round throw rug, and I'm going to make a round window topper. As today went on, things DID get better and my brain cleared. And guess what....we are going to round out that big ol' spot and paint a few more on the carpet!! Like I said, the carpet is not new, so we figured...what the heck!!!

And in the way of my day getting better....I met Greg Luzinski (former Phila Phillie slugger) at Home Depot when we went for more paint AND we went to Krispy Kreme and scored a FREE HOT GLAZED!!

Thank you all soooo much for your great ideas!! The DIS sure is a cool place!!

Dorothy I feel your pain...so often I take on something small and before you know it...ouch! {{{Hugs}}}

I spilled green paint on beige carpet about 4 years ago and our homeowners insurance paid to replace it.......................might want to check it out.
