As you may know, my Girl Scout troop has been working toward a trip..Disney, of course. June, 2004. 6 nights at Shades of Green, 5 day Stars and Stripes passes (like length of stay) and 3 nights on the Disney Wonder. So, needless to say, we have alot of $$$ to earn. This is what they came up with for this time of year.
You know those gift jars with a layered cookie mix? They are creating an order form featuring 4 cookie mixes, (m&m, sugar, snowball and brownie), 2 soups (potato & bean) and a hot chocolate mix. Lots of the ingredients are being dontated, along with the jars and fabric for the tops. They want to sell each jar for $5. (Quart) They researched the intenet for recipes, will take orders for 2 weeks, (mostly during thanksgiving to hit up the reletives!) ans we will assmeble them, and deliver. Have any of you ever done something like this? Is the price ok? And feed back is greatly appreciated!!

I hate to put a damper on it, but have you checked with the health department in your area to see if this is allowed? In some areas, they are very picky about selling anything to do with food.

Yep...Can't have meat, dairy, etc without a health permit. We can have a bake sale, but not a hot dog sale or spaghetti dinner without the proper permits.
Guess I'm msotly asking if the pricing seems right...recieve these as gifts; never bought one!

$5 is a bit steep, but since they're Girl Scouts, you may be fine. People will be willing to pay a little more since it's for a good cause. Just like we do when we buy those expensive cookies. But it might be possible that if you charge $5, people will just give $5. If you charge $3 or $4, some people may pay for the jars plus give an additional donation.

That's a great idea for this time of year. Those make good gifts.

I think you'll sell them at $5 a jar. You might want to say they'd be great as Christmas gifts. We made them last year for friends and teachers and they were well received. Wish you were here, because I'd buy from you. Good luck with your project and enjoy your trip!

I think it sounds like a great idea!!!!! The price doesn't sound bad to me, but I also live in an area of the country where prices are higher...we're about an hour or so from NYC. How does that pricing measure up(no pun intended;) )in your area?

They are great things to sell.
The price seems good to me. I've seen them in the stores for $7.

I've seen the cookie/brownie ones in stores for $10. I wouldn't pay $10 because I make them myself. $5 sounds like a bargain!

It sounds like something that I would like to buy to give as a holiday present to teachers, babysitters, etc.

$5 is a nice round number -- I think you'll do really well. :D

I am very familiar with them because I have made them the last two years as gifts for teachers and friends. They are always a big hit! I have seen them in stores for as cheap as $7.99 and for as much as $12.00, with the avereage price being $9.99, so I think $5.00 is a bargain. Something that I like to do is to tie a small wooded spoon to the jar and to laminate the recipe card before attaching them to the jars. If you don't have a laminator at your disposal, clear contact paper works great. Good luck on your project, you will have to let us know how it works out.

Thanks for all the input!!!!
I know what you mean about the high priced cookies...in this area we sell GS cookies from Nov 1 - 12. We really don't make alot of cash from them. Most of our proceeds go toward badges and insignia. Remember, we only get 48 cents out of every $3 box. So for a trip like this our troop of 6 girls would have to sell
12,500 boxes of them. So, living in the sticks, we ahve to do other fundraisers.
It's nice to get feed back from REAL people who will tell me like it is, man!;)

I think that's a great fundraiser idea!
I would definately buy them & think that $5.00 was a good price to pay for them. I hope that you are able to reach your goal & take your trip.

I think $5 is a great price. The school here is selling them for $10.95 right now.

Not to change the subject, but you ONLY get 43 cents for every $3.00 box of cookies sold?!! That's not very much!!!

I would think the GSA would be a bit more generous since the cookies they put in the box are smaller and there aren't as many cookies as they used to have years ago. (OK, I don't have fact on that, but I remember selling them as a little girl and there seemed to be so much more than now! lol)

Back on subject: I've never heard of a cookie gift jar here but it sounds like a GREAT idea! I would definitely buy one for $5. It sounds like a bargain and also for a great cause.

Good Luck! :)

This sounds like a great fundraiser. And the price sounds great too. Especially this time of year when people will be buying small gifts for neighbors and co workers ect.

I've never heard of a cookie gift jar before, and would love to see a picture of the finished product, they sound really neat. I think it's a cool idea... different from the usual things that kids try to sell, and I think that the price is reasonable for a fundraiser. After all... they try to sell chocolate bars for $2 - $3, so $5 for something so much better is fair to me.

Good luck to your troop, and I hope they reach their goal! What a great project, to try to get to go to WDW! The coolest thing we ever did was camp in a church basement. :p

Where did you find the receipes? We were thinking of doing the layered cookie thing for my troops mother's day gift, but I can't find a site. Do you think you could share that information? Thanks :)
