Eldest DS went out to Geneva this morning to represent London/Essex at his first international swimming meet - but very nearly did not make it.

He had to meet the minibus at a sainsburys about a 15 min drive from home at 2.00 a.m. So set the alarm on my mobile as I do when I need to get up at 4.00 am to take him training. So as we had been up yesterday for training we went to bed around 9. DH came in from work at 11.30 and I roused the next thing I knew I was looking at the clock and it was 1.42 a.m. my alarm had not gone off. I have never rushed around so much in my life - you try getting a 17yr old up in a rush - I am thankful for the fact that almost everything was ready last night except for his pillow and toothbrush. Well we remembered the pillow and forgot the toothbrush, and whilst driving he texted another swimmer and asked them to wait for him, but I had visions of having to drive him to the airport - but we made it by 2.04 and they were still waiting. I have never driven so fast and caught so many traffic lights in my life.

I am now at work so tired from my mid night antics that I am not sure I won't fall asleep - but DS just texted me to say they had arrived in snowy geneva, so fingers crossed that he gets his British Championship qualifying times he wants.

Wow - what a nightmare!

Please keep us posted about your DS - I really hope he makes his time. You must be soooo proud.

what a start to the day, hope your DS does well :goodvibes

Poor you, what a nightmare, at least it worked out in the end. Good luck to your son.

Fingers crossed for your son ...... boy I remember those early morning for training and meets they certainly wreck your social lfe :rotfl: :rotfl: What event does your son swim ?? From your sig pic he looks like a breaststroker ??

Not a nice way to start the day, hope you manage to get a quiet nights sleep tonight :cloud9:

So glad you made it in time :thumbsup2 .Wishing your Ds all the luck+pixie dust :wizard: in the world, let us know how he gets on.x.

Thanks for all good wishes, really suffering with tired eyes at the moment, will go out for a walk in the fresh air to wake me up.

DisneynutinLondon - no actually he's a backstroker, but you rarely get good pics of that stroke too much water splashing over the face, Breaststroke is actually his worse stroke - I always say that at 6'7" his arms and legs are too long for breaststroke.

We have only been doing mornings from Dec 07 when he changed clubs before that he did 7 hours training a week and made Nationals every year and British champs at 15, so has found it extra hard to start getting up in the mornings but is certainly paying off as he has 7 national times for this summer already!

That fantastic with his times ..... well done to him. All that training is obviously paying off. What club does he swim for now ??

The coach for our DS #1 wanted him to swim backstoke, although DS #1 was really a fly swimmer :confused3 Unfortunately his competitive swimming days are now over as he had major spinal surgery 6 months ago :scared1: He actually got back into the water for the first time on Monday evening and managed 30 mins which wasn't bad going but he won't ever be able to compete again as the strain on his back would be too much.

Glad you made it. I hope your DS does well:goodvibes

He swims for Romford Town but this trip is with a new squad that has been set up to for top swimmers in Essex/part of London called 'ORTUS LONDINIUM', they are infact the largest squad taking part in this competition, but they all swim for individual different clubs.

That is a shame about your son, but his health is the most important, I bet he misses it though, it does kind of take over your life. Hope that he continues to improve

  "Misses it" now that would be the understatement of the year !!!! He's like a "fish out of water" if you'd pardon the pun, when he can't swim, the moods and temper we've had just out of fustration because he couldn't get into the water were horrible. I think part of it was also the realisation that there would be no more competitions. We tried to make him feel better by telling him he no longer had to train 12 hours a week but I don't think that made any difference :headache:

At least now he's back in the water, a couple of times a week at the moment, and although he's not "training" he's still in the pool at the same time as his squad and so can benefit from the camaradarie and I think deep down he know as you say his health is more important.

Thank goodness you made it, good luck to your son it sounds as though he's doing great :thumbsup2

I hope his swim goes well

Poor you what a morning!, there's nothing worse than running late as everything seem's to be against you all day, or it certainly does for me :rolleyes1
Good luck to your Son, hope he has a great time too :goodvibes
