My food allergic child's dining review-

Ds (7yo- has multiple food allergies to dairy, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts....... yet is a foodie)

I tried to take photos of all of ds' meals so that some other parents of FA kiddos can see just how well Disney does with allergies, but I haven't uploaded any of them yet. Hopefully I can post them by the end of the week.

At each restaurant, the chef came out and talked to us about the meal, cooked it, and personally brought it over to ds.

Thurs night:

Dinner at Whispering Canyon Cafe- Ds had steamed shrimp, rice pilaf, and green beans. Itzakoodle ice pop for desert. We've been there before and its a fun kid atmosphere. I heard at one point that they used to throw rolls around the restaurant.....if they do, they haven't done it on either occasion that I've been there. My food was ok- baked chicken- I go there for ds not as much for me.

Friday:

Lunch: Plaza restaurant at MK- ds was STARVING so he had an adult burger & fries order with the EnerG bun instead of the regular bun (the kids burger buns were ok, but not the regular adult ones) Again tofutti ice cream for dessert. My only complaint was that we waited a good 12-15min for the chef to get to us in order to even discuss food. We were there at 11:30am, and it was not busy upon our arrival. I had a burger & fries also.

Dinner: Olivia's cafe. Ds had mickey pasta & meat sauce with apple slices (because he didn't want green beans again) and more tofutti. Nothing exciting that night for ds. I really like their food and had a mojito chicken dish, jasmine rice, and asparagus. Normally I get dessert there, but I had just lost my camera and was freaking out through most of dinner :scared1: (found it behind the dresser in the hotel room a few hrs later) and it wasn't as enjoyable as I wanted it to be because of the camera issue.

Saturday- We went to NASA and had dinner at Spoodles. We had hummus to start- the pita bread was not safe, so ds had a plate of carrots and celery for the hummus (he LOVES hummus). For dinner ds had a beef kabob with rice and fruit. And more tofutti ice cream, can't forget that! The child's portion of the beef kabob wasn't that large, so he ate half of one of my kabobs also. I had the same dinner that he did, but had a slice of chocolate cake for dessert (my first dessert of the trip and I was NOT impressed- I should have had the mango cheesecake at Olivia's but passed it up to go search for the camera).

Sunday-

Lunch: Sci Fi dine in- more burgers and fries for ds with apple slices. Their adult burger buns were fine for him. I had the same meal. He, of course, had tofutti for dessert.

Dinner: Boma. Double thumbs up from both of us! Ds had prime rib, the spicy pork roast, cous-cous, yellow cinnamon raisin rice, assorted grilled veggies, some potato wedges, and a few other things I can't remember. He didn't like the watermelon rind salad (bitter), but ate just about everything else. And more tofutti to top it all off. I had a little bit of everything. Our chef, Donna, was so awesome there that she even went to the back and got me a big plate of desserts so I wouldn't have to leave ds at the table by himself (the line for desserts was a good 10min long).

So for dinner, Boma was at the top of both of our lists. I was astounded by the number of foods that ds could eat there.

I won't go back to Spoodles. The chef was great, food was good, but I spent about $25 more there for less food (and less variety) than I did at Boma.

Will go back to Olivia's again and get the cheesecake- my regret for the trip is not having that cheesecake.

WCC will be on the "maybe/maybe not" list next time. I'd like to try another new place instead.

My biggest complaint is that for the kids meals, the veggies/sides are the same everywhere:green beans, carrots/celery, fruit, or apples. Ds was SO sick of green beans, and was never a big fan of apples to begin with. He was literally groaning out loud when the chef would suggest either of them.

And yes, I know he had too much tofutti. Although I'm sure ds thinks he didn't have enough. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the review! It is always interesting to hear how the experience is for others who have food allergic kids/adults. My 6 yr old is allergic to peanut/tree nuts and also a type 1 diabetic.

One thing for him is that he does *not* like tofutti. He isn't allergic to dairy but often that is the only peanut safe thing. He isn't big on any kind of ice cream and would much prefer a cookie or brownie. I find I have to call the restaurants and arrange dessert in advance or otherwise they trot out the tofutti which doesn't work for him! It is hard for us to eat dessert if all he has to choose from is something he does not like.

Usually he has been able to order any sort of side/vegetable he has wanted at a TS restaurant (like a small plate of tomatoes for example).

I am happy to hear about your good experience at Boma - we had an ADR there on Easter Sunday and I hope we have as good of an experience.
 

Selket, your post reminded me that ds did NOT have Tofutti at WCC- he had one of those Itzakoodle ice pops.

Apparently some restaurants have Divvies. Before we left, the chef at Boma told me that they stock them. Ds is just big into ice cream.
