I have jealously read this board for years wondering why I had never been chosen for the coveted pin but was rather doomed to wait for the too slow to come "general public discount." I had pretty much figured I would never get one. Today I called to switch a September ressie to November dates (13-20th) at the Poly. I expected to pay rack rate and hopefully adjust it later when a general public or AP holder rate come out. I had priced the reservation on line and it came to about 3,300. I always book on the phone so I called in and they quote me 2146!!! That's 35% discount! The CM said I had a discount under my name. 
Well, I just about peed my pants.
So the moral of my story is NEVER GIVE UP!! Even after years of PIN free living you too can be hit with some pixie dust!! And.. always call in to check before you book becuase you never know.
