My DVR erased my shows.....explain how this happened to me please

I have Time Warner Cable.

We went to Disney for the past couple of weeks on vacation.

I knew the DVR would overflow because it was going to tape more shows than there was room for. But I *thought* it would just tape over older shows like my Tivo used to.

Instead I have come home to ONLY 3 shows TOTAL on my DVR and all taped within the last couple of days.

So, does the DVR just delete everything when it fills up? that is the only explanation I can think of. Is this normal? I am so frustrated!

Yes, sorry to say, it has happened to me too - but usually one show at a time. The important thing is to check the settings for saving the shows, usually for each show it gives you a choice of "keep two episodes" "keep five episodes" "keep until space is needed" or "keep until I delete."

If it is something you know you will be sad if you miss, then choose "keep until I delete"... but that does take up a lot of space, and you will lose other programs because there won't be enough space for new programs.

Another problem is that HD takes up a lot of space, so if you record a lot of HD, you get to keep a lot fewer programs. It's just a bummer.

What you are desribing is what I expected.....for it to delete one show at a time.....but it erased EVERYTHING, including the newly recorded shows.

This makes no sense to me.

And yes, it was set to keep all the shows it recorded during vacation.

Our DVR deleted everything a couple of weeks ago too. I am not sure why. It wasn't anywhere near full. It also took everything off our preset timers. We had to re-set all of those. Luckily, I was caught up on all of my shows. Mostly what was on there were a ton of Sponge bob and Ben 10 shows that my son watches over and over and over.

Not sure exactly what happened in your case, but this is what happened to us recently.

We have 2 dvr's & the one didnt record anything for over 2 weeks because it lost its signal so it was not receiving anything to record until i rebooted it.

Then about 3 weeks ago, time warner did an upgrade & we thought we lost everything we recorded. You had to hit "list" on the remote to view what shows we taped. If you hit guide, access menu, then dvr show list nothing would show.

This just happened to me. All of a sudden everything is gone. I asked DH, nope, I asked DS, nope...no one knew. So once again, I set everything up to record. Every thing seems fine. One week later ALL SHOWS ARE GONE.

I called COX and they came out and said the DVR was "fried"...I said "I just moved in and this box is 3 months old"....No, Cox guy explained that all the DVR's are refurbished, never are they brand new. And this one just stopped working properly.

So OP, call your cable co and get yourself as in my case another new, refurbish, used DVR!!!

I reccomend a slingbox. You hook up your cable box to your internet router and anywhere you can get online you can watch your tv live or your recorded shows. It also works your DVR to check recording dates, save times. etc. Great for when you realize you do not have it set to record.

after the initial purchase it is totally free. I got DW a medium version and it was only $100. many months ago.

I am returning some DVR boxes tomorrow anyway as our promo has run out.

I am seriously thinking of getting Tivo boxes instead....I can use them with Netflix too.

One thing I am looking at with tivo is that you can use your cell or internet to tell your tivo to record something if you haven't set it yet.

I've never had that problem, but the last time we went to Disney, the neighbors were feeding the animals. They turned off the switch that the DVR and all the electronics were plugged into, apparently on Day 1, so nothing recorded!

yes, you can watch shows that have been recorded or program recordings, delete specific shows if you need room. Anything you can do at home with the remote, you can do online or with certain smartphones that can install the application.

DVRs, like all things, come in various grades. Some are excellent; some have reliability issues. Some DVRs, when they have a failure, recover by restoring their hard drive from a system server, thereby wiping out anything that could have caused the failure, but also wiping out all recordings that may have been there, as well.
