My DVC tour experience, if you are considering it, here's how it is

This is mostly for people who are considering taking the DVC tour when in WDW. I will tell you what our family's experience was like.
We got picked up at our resort at 9:40 AM. We had left our daughters in the room and they were going to meet us at DD at noon, but we had our DS (almost 10) with us. I checked him into the kids' area where he played PS2 for a couple of hours. We were taken into the DVC preview center and offered coffee, tea or juice. Then we sat down. DH is a salesman. He noticed that we were seated at a table with two cushioned chairs and two straightback chairs. He told me that if one of us sat in a straightback chair, it meant we were less comfortable about the process and the guide would have focused on that person. The funny thing was, we both sat in the cushioned chairs.
Our guide was very nice. I will add in all fairness that our original guide in 2000 was an arrogant so-and-so and we almost didn't buy in because he really turned off DH--when we said we needed to go home and consider it, he completely shut off. This person who shall remain nameless is now in management and not a guide any longer. Our guide was from our home state (Ohio) and his sister went to my college.
He took us to a "salon" (DH says most people call it a closing room) and showed us some photos of AKL and SSR. Since we had been in DVC from 2000-2004, we knew the point system. He broke down some prices for us and explained the incentives. We then went to see the models. I liked the style of the AKV rooms but AKL didn't do a thing for DH. He liked SSR better. When we got back to the "salon" he told our guide to go ahead and write up 160 points. The guide asked us if we wanted to think more about it, but DH said he had made up his mind, really missed the room size and convenience of DVC, and to go ahead and do it. The only problem was I didn't have my license; it was in the safe at YC. The girls were just about to board the DD bus--I called them and made them get off--they did and I told them to go get the license. They got the next bus. We arranged with our guide to come back after lunch to write it up.
We took DS to the ice cream parlor and he had a scoop, then a DVC van took us to DD. We ate lunch and went to the DVC booth and she called another van to go back to SSR. We dropped off DS (he never even saw the models but didn't care) then walked the girls to the models, then saw some things he hadn't shown us yet--the restaurants, the shop, the pool, the spa (what a great smell). He even showed us the grand villa model, which hadn't been open in the morning, because I'd never seen one. My 16 year old was impressed by the seemingly high number of cute teenage boys milling around. The guide assured her that this resort has a lot of teens due to the closeness of DD. Then we sent the girls to the ice cream parlor (in all fairness it seemed there was nothing for them to do in the room DS was in) and filled out and signed all of our paperwork.
After that we all went to the ice cream parlor, heard "welcome home"s all around, got a complimentary photo taken, and got yet another DVC van to take us back to DD.
We have an August use year. I have already banked our 2007 points so we will have 320 points as of August 1, 2008. Our spring break trip next year will cost between 288 or 316 points depending on which day we arrive (April 3 and 4 are still magic season; the rest is premiere).
The process is painless. There is no pressure. You won't be asked to sign that very day or lose the incentive. Trust me, being married to a salesman (and a daughter of a salesman as well) hard closes do NOT work on me at all. You can take it home, or take it back to the room, and discuss it as much as you want. If you want another resort they will check for you (we considered BCV as there were 537 March use year points available, but the points are higher and the cost was $104, versus the $94 we paid for SSR). If you are looking at these boards you are already educating yourself and will be able to ask the right questions without being pressured. As it is, I am wishing we had bought 20 more points--but am going to sit still and hope I can get a break when/if they release KT availability.

Thanks for taking the time and posting!

We found the whole DVC tour process to be the most laid back, no pressure timeshare tour ever.

no pressure at all!! as soon as we seen the rooms , we were signing papers!!!
best money we ever spent.

Thanks for sharing this. We have four contracts and all were purchased by phone. It was nice to be walked through the process of buying on site.

When we took the tour last summer, it was painless and there was no pressure. Our guide Rob was great and has continued to be.

We also had a great no-pressure presentation. At the end, my husband asked, "What's the difference if we buy now or later?" The guide said there was no difference and to think about if we liked. After seeing the 1BR, there was nothing to think about. We love our DVC!

Congrats on the new purchase. We're headed down in a few weeks and bring close family friends with us. Just out of curiosity were they offering any incentives (fast passes, gift cards, etc) to just take the tour? Our friends are considering a tour but are on the fence about the whole thing as they have had bad "time share" experiences in the past. Your post resonates what I shared about our experience as well.

Welcome Home:cool1: and thanks for the report, always wondered how it went...we bought sight unseen:goodvibes

so, how long did the entire process take?

We never took the tour!
DH and I bought sight unseen. We do plan to stop in during our June trip to see the AKV models since we are planning to add on there.

My mom did the tour in 2002, she is the reason DH and I looked into buying. We looked over all her info.......then I researched it to death online.
She didn't buy, but took the tour again on our Dec. 2006 trip. She was paying cash, the guide kept encouraging her to take her time and think it over.
Nope, her mind was made up and she must have finally convinced him to take her money! She and dad bought 250 points at SSR.

I have a question. My wife and I are considering DVC. We almost bit several years ago and bought at BCV but stupidly did not. Did I read you right that you can still buy BCV if it is available from DVC inventory? I thought you could only buy SSR or AKV? If I could (still) buy BCV or even BWV, we will definitely be doing some shopping for a DVC points buy on our upcoming trip!

You can purchase points at any DVC property for which they have inventory. If the inventory is not available they can also waitlist your request. There is also resale availabe through Timeshare Store or other resale agencies.

OK, first, yes, we were offered gift cards for taking the tour. I think the original amount was $50, although we ended up also getting a $500 gift card for signing up.
Second, our first thought was to get BCV points and yes, they had 537 points available in March use year. The difference is that with that, we wouldn't have gotten the 07 points. Also, the points were $104 each, and the dues are higher, so our financial costs were increased. Our guide said those points would not last long, but as Minmouse said, you can buy any DVC resort if they have it in inventory, and if I remember you don't have to pay closing costs, but you are paying full price at the time.

Can you just take the tour? We bought last year on the cruise, but would like to see the models of other villas besides AKV. Also, we won't have a car, will they pick us up, and when and where do we arrange for this ?:goodvibes

i took the tour on march 22nd from downtown disney , i had looked into dvc for at least a year already , not only was my salesman a total gentleman ,he wasnt at all pushy it was totally painless and when we saw the 1 and 2 bedroom suites at ssr , and the models for akv we were sold , im new to the dvc with 160 pt to start and they gave us disney shopping cards just for taking the tour i believe it was $15 per person ($45) and we got a $ 500 gift card for signing plus they gave us 160 pts from 2007 which we banked for next yr.... if your thinking about going dont hesitate there are no pushy sales involved it was very laid back good luck:cool1:

The SSR models are open for members to tour from 5-7pm each day and you can just go in and walk around. Just take a bus to SSR and get off at the bus stop across from the main pool (Springs stop). You can also see the ones at Boardwalk if they are open when you are walking along there. I don't know the hours for those.

Rock'n Robin just curious was your guide Brad? He did our's and was great very informative and super nice and not pushy at all. Has sent us a couple of cards and even called us just to say hello. Well ok maybe a little persistant but I didn't feel pushed at all. We did buy in but bought Resell just too good to pass by and save ourselves a little bit of money and received a 1.5 % cheaper rate.

No actually our guide was Bill Wroe. He is a really nice guy. I've been surfing resales myself (before we even close on our first 160) but I just wish we'd bought 200 instead. Oh well. DH is waiting on KT, which of course is not "confirmed or denied".
