Hi all,

Could use some prayers for my son's soccer coach (he is also a dear friend of the family) this morning. He is donating a kidney to a friend of his. This will be the second kidney this man has received, the first being his mothers a few months ago. The first transplant didn't work due to his 'waking' up during the surgery (his movements caused the surgeon to damage the donor kidney with the scalpel!!!!) he didn't totally wake up, just wasn't anesthesized quite enough.

We are all praying that this transplant will work and that both men will be up and around very soon...

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers!!!

Also, anyone have any clever ideas as an alternative to sending flowers? I know he will get plenty of them, I just thought it would be nice to get him something different...

Of course he has my prayers. :) What a wonderful, generous thing to do.

How about sending him a bouquet of balloons with a basket of odds and end to keep him occupied while he recovers?

Best wishes and prayers that all goes well. Thanks for asking for support for them both.

Thanks for your prayers guys...just can't wait to hear they are both out of surgery and stable. Sounds like a great idea Serena, thanks!

Here is a news brief regarding the first transplant attempt:

Kidney transplant fails

"A man undergoing a kidney transplant last week at UPMC Presbyterian came out of his anesthesia prematurely during a transplant operation and ruined the kidney that had been donated from his mother, KDKA-TV reported last night.

Dominic Leccia, 35, of Monongahela, who suffers from a hereditary kidney disease, and his mother, Carole of South Park, were operated on Oct. 29. Carole Leccia told KDKA her son woke up and bolted upright. A surgeon had a hand over the incision because he was sewing it.

"And the kidney came up in his hand so hard it flew and it ripped his artery. He almost bled to death," she said. "I almost lost my son because of this."

A statement yesterday from UPMC said Leccia "awoke with a jolt which caused the nearly sewn-in kidney to protrude. As a result, the blood vessels were stretched and the renal vein partially torn, requiring repair." The kidney was removed the following day.

The UPMC transplant team is evaluating another possible donor."

Prayers for him. What a wonderful thing he is doing. I am constantly amazed at the strides made in donor technology.

A co-worker just returned from leave of absence because he donated a kidney to his cousin. Now the kicker (at least to me) is that they are not even blood relatives, as his cousin was adopted.

He said it was a pretty amazing experience, and that the recovery was not too bad. He also said he did lots of reading while he was recouping, so maybe a couple of books or magazines?

What a wonderful, selfless act. My prayers are with both the coach and the recipient. We have sent cookie bouquets before, and they look very nice, plus they are yummy.
