Our 9 year old sheltie-shepherd mix is in the doghouse (no pun intended)!! He has gone on a chewing and destroying bender around the house the last few days. On the 4th, we gated him in the kitchen and put the radio on for him, because he gets nervous with the fireworks, and he crashed the gate and went on a rampage chewing pillows, comforters, table cloths and bags. I was really MAD, but I sort of understood since it was the 4th and he is a skittish little guy. Gating in the kitchen with the music on has worked for him since he was born, I don't know why this year was different. Tonight, we gated him again while we went to DS's baseball game (I can't trust him now, I'm afraid Jaws will strike again). We were gone for an hour. This dog chewed up both of my kitchen rugs. I am getting very impatient with this dog. Has anyone else dealt with this problem with an older dog (who should know better!!)- what have you done to curb the path of destruction?

Sounds anxiety related. If he's 20# or more, give him 1 benedryl tablet when you're going to be out for awhile. It may be enough to calm him down.

If this doesn't work, you may want to check with your vet about prescription meds you can give him for occasional anxiety. Poor guy.

Mine barked all night at the fireworks. They hate them :(

This was on the show Primetime today and they gave there dod doggie prozac.

look it up and read on it. It should be on there website.

You could also try something called Rescue Remedy. You can find it at health food stores and in the vitamin area of food stores.
