My Dog Is In Heat...

For lack of an alternative, she is currently wearing a pair of my son's underwear. I put them on her backwards, with her tail sticking out the front opening, and pinned them to keep them snug. They seem to be doing the trick, but she is quite a sight! She doesn't seem to mind them, though.

Someone suggested buying a baby "onesy" so I might try that.

You can buy doggie diapers-they have them in the pet sections at Walmart, Target, etc as well as pet stores.

If you have a bigger petstore near you, they should carry a cloth doggie diaper that you put disposable liners in (or can use woman's pads). It basically looks like a diaper with a tail hole.

Be VERY careful, if any unneutered male can get to her, in any way shape or form, he will. Some unneutered males will also "make the attempt", which could be very traumatic for her.

I'll leave the "please consider getting her fixed" discussion for someone else;).

ok i just imagined that! She must look sooo cute:cloud9:

We got disposable doggie diapers at Petco when one of our doxies was in heat a couple of weeks ago, and they worked really well. We did run out before she stopped bleeding, though, and had to modify one of DS3's leftover Pull-Ups and hold it on with duct tape. lol

For the pp who asked why the OP's dog isn't fixed - maybe the dog started heat before they could get her in for a spay (ours started her heat at 6 months, 1 week of age - kind of hard to prevent that when local vets won't spay until 6 months); it certainly sounds like the OP was unprepared for it to happen since she was digging around for something to put on her. Maybe she plans to breed the dog - if she is, I fail to see how it is anyone here's business. There are any number of reasons that her dog is unspayed and absolutely NO reason why she should have to answer for it to anyone on here.

I agree please get her fixed.

I put up with many years of my female being in heat, because I showed her and dogs that are shown can't be altered. I know, don't get me started.

I got Jasmine spayed last year after her show career ended. I love not having to worry about her time of the month. And sometimes if a dog keeps herself very clean, you may no know until a few days in whats going on. Happened to me. Thank goodness she didn't come in contact with another dog.

Been there...

As a side note, she did not say how old the dog is..maybe the dog went into heat before she was set to go in to get spayed...Please don't judge the OP as no details were given..

As for my own experience with it, I have used pull ups..cut out a tail hole, and worked great with something to hold them on tight...She was a pro at wiggling while she walked to get them off..LOL

Our vets here spay and neuter as young as 3 months. 5 of my 6 dogs are purebreds that I rescued. Many people assume that just because someone pays for a dog they will take care of it.... Not always true

OP, I hope if you are a breeder, you are a responsible one that does it to better the breed...not to make money

I would only let her out to potty on a leash with very close supervision.

My sister puts adult diapers on her Golden Retriever.....I always kid her about it because for some reason she always seems to have them in her car :rotfl2: Mature of me, I know but it's my sis. She just makes a slit in the behind for her tail.

I don't know why her Goldie is not spayed because it's NONE OF MY BUSINESS...hint, hint.

For those who have wondered, this is her second "season". Her first heat was in July, just as we were going out of town.

We had expected about 9 months between seasons, so this did catch us a little unaware. The underwear are probably my best choice for her as I expect she would probably bite and chew at any of the disposable items that are available...she's just that kind of dog. It really looks funny, though.

We haven't had her spayed because we haven't decided yet if we will breed her when she is older. She is just about 16 months old, so she will be nearly 2 when she comes in heat again. We will decide between now and then what we are going to do. She is in absolutely no danger of coming in contact with intact males. She is either in our completely fenced yard (no way for her to get out or another dog to come in) or she is on leash.

We have an older Westie who we had spayed at about a year old. She later developed an umbilical hernia at the incision site which cost us a pile of money to repair. After that, we decided we wanted another Westie and dropped $1000. on the one currently in heat. Frankly, we want to be sure that our pet family is complete this time before we spay her.

Closed pyometra -- 1 week in ICU, many plasma transfusions, $8,000 fees

Best reason ever to spey all dogs which are not show dogs and only being bred for the purpose of improving the breed - not backyard breeding
