Jake, my 12 y/o Chinese Shar Pei died last night. Around 10:30pm he woke us in extreme distress. He was having trouble breathing and in terrible pain. I imediatly thought it was Bloat because his stomach was swollen. Our next door neighbor is a Veterinarian. Thank God for him! He came racing over and imediatly sedated my dog to relieve his pain. He determined it was Bloat and to far along to save. He had to be put down rather than suffer longer. Our DD17 witness this all happen and is understanably very distraught. She's going to school a little late today because none of us really slept. We're just going to miss him terribly. He was a great little dog.

I am so sad for you. I lost a wonderful golden retreiver to bloat years ago. It was too late before we discovered it. It often is. The condition proceeds very rapidly by the time you detect it. In the middle of the night, how could you have possibly known? My standard poodle Annie, bloated at 18 months of age. I detected it very early, and even then, she was only given a 50/50 chance of survival. She survived. I am sure her youth helped her. Her recovery wasn't uneventful however. She had PVCs 5 days post op and had to be weaned off of Pronestyl. I don't think an elderly dog would have survived that under the best of circumstances. I didn't realize that Shar Pei's were at risk. It is often larger, deep chested dogs; standard poodles, goldens, shepherds, blood hounds. In fact, some lines of blood hounds have prevented surgery because it is almost common.

I am so very sorry for your familie's loss. We went through this about 3 years ago with our 16 year old chow/shepherd mix in the middle of the night. I understand exactly what you are going through.

 Hugs to you and your family.
