Jeff I do miss those late night chats. We are stuck on a few things. She wants a jacuzzi, but the bath room is small ,even the contractor said it is not a good idea for that room. She would like a pedestal sink but i say where would we put all of our toiletries and towels , especially if the jacuzzi takes up more room? and of course colors and type of tile. She likes natural stone and wants to put a heater under the floor to keep the feet warm. I say if we go with ceramic tile the floor would not be as cold. So we are at loggerheads.

Okay, now you gave us some specifics! About the jacuzzi, if it is at ALL possible, she has to have one  I've seen some pretty small whirlpool tubs by the way!! About the Pedestal sink, no problem, give it to her.... I'm sure she's already thought up a place to put the toiletries right? As for color... let her pick this... now, as for the floor, I think maybe you'd better have a bigger say in it... But, don't forget, ceramic tile is cold & dangerously slippery!!! I don't know much about the natural stone, but I'm not too keen on putting a heater under the floor either!! Won't a scatter rug do?

yeah, I am willing to look for a small jacuzzi, but I hope it would be big enough for us to enjoy. we are not petite people. i am willing to give in for the pedestal, and I would not care what color or texture as long we can be a bit more agreeable... you guys gave me some perspective that I did not have before.

I think I would be uncomfortable with putting a heater in the floor. Of course, I'm sure you can make it 'safe', but IMHO that's just another source of 'ignition' that you don't want...

check radiant floors here

The jacuuzzi question may be self-answering. We asked a plumber friend about upgrading our bathroom with one and was told most of them have to be built into new houses because they are too big to fit into the house otherwise. Check into it.

Good luck!

With the pedestal - she's the one that has to worry about where to put her stuff. As long as you have room for your toothbrush and comb, you're good to go.

Since your wife wants the pedestal, you can't do this, but in our bathroom we have a small vent that runs underneath the vanity and blows out over your feet. It's nice in the winter and you don't have to have radiant heat. :)

Strangely enough, I'm on your side on those items, joe ;) Do y'all have a trusted friend/relative to help "gently" mediate practicality with wants/needs?

I.E., I'd suggest that a "tiny" jacuzzi really defeats the purpose...without room to spread out, it's difficult to take advantage of the relaxing effects. Same with the pedestal sinks...they're attractive, IF you have a storage closet for all the toiletries, etc.

Here's a place for compromise: do the jacuzzi, but get rid of the pedestal sinks. OR, keep the sinks, but do a great seated shower with a shower massage.

Don't get me wrong....bathrooms ARE important. Bought my condo BECAUSE of the 10x14 bathroom with roomy garden whirlpool, separate seated shower and double vanity. But I COULD do without the pink ceramic floor and pink/beige marbelized hardscape - whateverya do, go with neutral colors! ;)

Good luck!

Jeff, That's a helleva piece of equipment. They should have these at DVC resorts

I'm not a guy. I'm not offering advice on what you should do. I will say that I do everything in my power to prevent my husband from "doing it himself". I think he should practice law and pay a professional to do stuff like that, but that's just me.

I hope you find a compromise. Are you hoping that she will get so sick of the unfinished bathroom that you will get your way? That might work...let us know.

Did it ever occur to you to toss her your tool belt/toolbox and say have at it darlin? If she wants it all her way then she should be in there doing the labor! Its not "her" room its belongs to both of you and you'll both have to compromise or it'll come up everytime you argue about something minor.

How this suggestion to her -- A whirlpool tub in the bathrom.
If you are willing to spend the $ on a jacuzzi, suggest a Hot Tub outside on a privacy deck or patio?
Pedestal sink -- give in. I wouldn't want one. But that is just personal taste. I don't think they are practical.
Doesn't seem like she is looking for practicality, and you are. That's where the problem lies.
You can do it her way and have the satisfaction of later stating, "I Told You So!" ;) :jester:

Today I have little sympathy, as I'm on a roof in Daytona Beach putting on a new roof.

I say: You guys come to some sort of compromise, but do realize that generally, women have a better sense of style and taste - so try and give in where you can, and MAKE HER HELP!!!

Pebs, you're DISing on the roof? :teeth:

Radiant heat flooring is wonderful! Ceramic tile would not be any warmer than stone, and depending on the finish, it can be slippery. You lose that one.

However, I agree that pedestal sinks are a pain. They look nice, but if you don't have a place for the bathroom clutter, everything can look junky! :( Where will the extra TP go? :teeth:

Have you checked out the smaller tubs with jets? Other things to consider (I'm sure you have!) - will the floor support the tub? Do you have a big enough hot water heater? My parents just bought a home with 2 hot water heaters, one just for the jacuzzi!

Good luck! I hope this all works out for you guys.

Yes on the radiant floor heating. DH and I have a small hvac business and he has done this for several people. Very nice. Actually, Bob Vila has used it on several of his homes as the main heating source in very cold climates. You may, however have to pay somebody to do this for you, making it expensive.
I have mixed feelings on the original post. I feel she should be compromising, but I don't know enough about your lives. Do you think that she frequently has had to compromise or that she has at least a bit of a point here? If so, make every effort to do it her way. For the toiletries, you could do shelving over the toilet. For the rest get some graph paper and sketch out a scale of the proportions. Also, take some masking tape and mark off in your bathroom where everything will go. Have your dw walk around and see if she feels too crowded.

I sneak down from the roof to DIS when hubby's not looking.

Geesh, it's hot up there!!!

LOL! DH NEVER questions any of my decisions about the bath or any other room in the house!

Joe: I vote for the regular tub/shower, then a hot tub outside on a patio or deck. While I've always wanted a big garden jacuzzi tub (now that's luxury, right?), I've found myself questioning this after our DVC trips to WDW (which I see your are joeOKW) I find that I do not use the jacuzzi tub much. It's such a pain to have to clean out so that it's ready the next time I want to use it. Who wants to get all relaxed and ready for bed only to have to clean the tub? Or who wants to get into a tub when it wasn't cleaned after the last use? Also, the water gets cold too quickly. Now, my hot tub is another story! The water is clean, I don't have to wait for it to fill, I don't have to clean it each time before or after I use it, and the water stays hot longer than I need it to! My vote is for the hot tub.

As for the pedestal sink, be sure to look at the top edge. We have one in a half bath and the edges are angled (perhaps so that water won't settle up there) such that the soap dispenser keeps sliding off and into the bowl. Crash! There went my nice ceramic dispenser! So, the beauty of my sink is lessened by the plastic soap dispenser I now have to use. Toothbrushes, cups, etc. have the same problem. The area is not very big and angled too much. My vote on this is still get the pedestal sink, but be aware of the top edge.

Good Luck!!
