My computer is fairly new. I purchased it 10-06-07. Got the HPa6230n. I had to take it into the Best Buy Geek Squad to have a back-up made and to reinstall everything after a program I downloaded would not uninstall!
That was in June. At that time, I mentioned about the fan running alot. They also cleaned all the dust out of it.
I watched how they took the side panel came off so I could clean it, myself, at home. Now the fan is running again. I tried cleaning it but nothing seems to work.
If I take it into Best Buy Geek Squad, and they decide to replace the fan, is this something I should be able to wait on or will I be without my computer while the replacement part is put on?

Fans are tricky. The fans are usually cheap from the factory. If the fan dies sometime the CPU dies shortly after because of the heat buildup. This depends on how many fans you have and which fan you are talking about. Most of the time about a year the fan will get louder from dirt and grim build up. I usually take my PC and blow out the dust every 6 months. Usually it will keep them running for longer I have a couple PCs that are reaching the 10 yr mark with out a hint of burn out. It is ok if it is a little loud but if you hear grinding you might want to wait.

I would say replace it yourself it is real easy to do, but I can understand how not everyone wants to dig in there. This is only if it is a PC fan. If it is the power supply fan just replace the whole power supply.

Seems to be a common issue with HP. I just replaced the system fan in my mom's HP a month ago.

One question: You say "Now the fan is running again." Is that what you meant to write? The fan actually should be running. All the time. If it isn't running, that's when you have a problem.

To answer your other question, it should take all of about 5 minutes to replace a fan. Unscrew the old one, unplug from the motherboard, screw in the new fan, plug back in to the motherboard. The only snag might be whether or not the Geek Squad has the size fan in stock that your PC needs. When I went there searching for a 92mm fan, none of the Best Buy's near me stocked them on the floor or had them behind the Geek Squad counter.
