My DD5 has nervous tics.... (magnesium content)

Please keep us updated. I am curious to see how her tests come out and if these suppliments will benefit her. Good investigating on your part!

It CAN hurt. It is possible to overdose on magnesium. Please watch your dosage - particularly in children. It is even possible to die of a magnesium overdose (though extremely rare).

Supplimenting your magnesium is a fine idea, I do it myself. But do watch dosage - especially with children for whom an adult sized suppliment is a LOT of magnesium.

I would have come back here sooner to tell, but in the middle of all this my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer.

:grouphug: I lost my dad two years ago to lung cancer. I will keep you in my prayers. That is great news about your DD I hope she continues to be healthy. Good Luck:hug:

WOW this thread is awesome! It gives me some hope after years of my oldest DS having numerous tics and my younger DS just developing them this week (the grunting noise). My oldest gets picked on at school for it. And I have to be honest, the constant tics get on my nerves. I know that makes me a terrible mother, as I know they can't help it. :guilty: It's just so frustrating. I just now checked the multi-vitamins they take and there's only 20 g of Magnesium in them!!!! And my kids eat pretty much none of the foods on the high magnesium food list. If this is safe and helps my kids' tics I'm all for it. From what I'm seeing so far, we all can benefit from it! I'll be going to the drug store tomorrow to pick up some suplemens for my entire family (after caling our dr. first, of course)!

On a side note, I noticed years ago my son's tics got worse on vacation which surprised me. The doctor explained that some kids "hold them in" subconsciously while in school, etc. and finally "let them out" when they're relaxed (on vacation). Different kdis let it all out on vacation, and others are so relaxed they don't tic. Go figure...:rolleyes1

Just as an FYI, there is another thing that can cause tics....sinus infections. DS developed tics in 2nd grade. It started with throat clearing and grunting, then developed into full facial tics, grimacing and scrunching up his shoulders. After a few weeks with them getting worse, I took him to his pediatrician and she looked at his nose and throat and said, sinus infection, here's some antibiotics. The tics were gone in 3 days. I guess the post nasal drip caused the tics. Who knew?:confused3

My 8 year old son has had tics for about three years now. I actually think he has tourettes but have not had him diagnosed. I have heard and have given him magnesium but I think for the most part his are caused by environmental allergies. Since it is "high" allergy season here his tics have increased so I think I will start him on the magnesium again. I do regularly give him epsom salt baths but I think he may need the extra as well.

As for the person who said you can overdose on magnesium, I believe, if you are getting to much you will start having loose stools. I just found this by looking it up.

"Also, we saw again and again that there was not a toxicity problem because the body does not store magnesium as it does calcium. The body excretes what is not used. Your upper limit will be when you notice continuous loose stools."

I want to pass along this website because I have learned so much from it. It is a tourettes/tics/pandas message board.

I'm so glad I saw this thread! My co-worker just today came back from a dr appt w/ her 8 yr old daughter who has been having these tics, and she was all upset about being referred to a neurologist for a list of rather grim diagnoses. I will tell her about the magnesium. Thanks!

To OP, I'm so sorry about your mom, I hope she's doing ok.

Thanks for posting about the mag - I get restless legs & will have to give this a try. I hope you let that doc know it's working so maybe he won't be so quick to dismiss natural options for the next patient.

Would TUMS have the magnisium and calcium together instead of supplements?
Also, on the throat clearing, could it be a second problem like asmatic allergy? I am having some seasonal flare of Asthma and went into bronchitis too. But this week again with the clearing of the throat from bronical inflamation due to Fall allergies I guess.

I am sitting ehre doing it now in the early Am and two of the family came out and told me to use my inhaler or something. I have Advair , guess I better take it daily for awhile.

I hope all the little ones are better,
dianne

OP- First of all, I'm sorry about your mother. Since she won't do chemo have you researched alternative methods for treating cancer?

Thanks for all the info. and I love when people prove doctors wrong (I'm a nurse). So many of them are just way too quick to pull out that prescription pad.

And, thanks for the reminder about magnesium. DS13 has ADHD and tics and I had started him on it and totally forgot to give it to him with his ADHD med. in the morning. When he gets excited he starts moving his arms too much. I think he may have Aspergers' but no doc has agreed - he has way too many of the signs but he is highly functioning with good grades thanks to his wonderful memory.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's lung cancer diagnosis. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

But I also really want to thank you for posting about magnesium. I'm going to try the Kids Calm with my 9 year old DS.....maybe it'll help him.:thumbsup2
