My 8yo DD was given a KICK award at school this week
The award is for students that show great improvement in their work and attitude at school. Only a few awards are given for the entire school. They receive a soccer ball and encouraged to have their friends and teachers sign it, she slept with it last night
She was nominated by her 2nd grade teacher and her special education teacher. This year she's gone from saying I can't read to What are we reading today? She is attempting to read her directions on papers and math work. She has brought home written work for the first time. She knew before that she didn't know how to write words and wouldn't attempt to write a story or sentence without someone helping her or writing her words for her. I'm not always able to read what she writes but I'm thrilled that she's trying and treasure the words.
It was about a year ago that I was struggling with the decision to pull her out of a private school where I knew she was comfortable but not necessarily challenged. She has blossomed at school and is making real progress. I'm so thankful to have a school and teachers that recognize that all kids don't learn alike and even those with a learning disability can achieve great things.
