Hi guys... I just tried google to help but couldn't find anything, so I am turning to my DIS friends.

My DD (9) has to make a model of Uranus (why does that planet always make me laugh :rotfl2: ) I am trying to help her but I can't come up with anything.

She needs to make it hang from the ceiling in the classroom and has to be 3-d. I was thinking syrofoam but how do I get a string through it (a needle would be to short to get through it). And also how do I get 12 rings to stay around it. And can you paint styrofoam, Uranus is blue and greenish/yellow (who knew :confused3 ) or would clay or floam or clay magic stuff be better?

Thanks.

How about a ballon wrapped in paper mache? Then hot glue something like cut up popsicle sticks to support the "moons". Hmm, those directions are as clear as mud, maybe I should keep thinking. :scratchin

She's building a model of Uranus?! Seriously?! :lmao: Tee hee hee hee hee!
(sorry--can't help myself, either. My family also laughs about European! No, European! No, you are!) :rotfl2: It's been a long day.

To get the string through maybe you could tie a piece of yarn and attach it to a sharpened pencil and push it through that way? That would work for getting it to hang. I would probably paint it, and it'll look cool with the texture from the styrofoam

I am so juvenile, I cannot see Uranus without thinking about ET. Then I crack myself up. Sorry I am no help.

Lisa I'm sorry but your DD needs to demand a different planet to work on. When the teacher asks why, she can say "cause nobody wants to see a model of Uranus". How can the instructor refuse that request? ;)

Did your daughter draw the short straw? :rotfl2:

You can spray paint the styrofoam ball bright blue, then sponge paint it with green-yellow acrylic, maybe toss some microfine glitter on it so it will look cold & frosty. To hang it, poke a hole about an inch deep with a pencil. Tie a piece of yarn to a nail and hot glue the nail into the hole. To attach the 12 rings, try using long chennielles--again with the nail :confused3 poke a hole about 2 inches deep, fill it with hot glue and poke in the chenneille. Hot glue the rings to the remaining length. You might need to put about 4 chennilles to support this many rings.Make the rings lightweight, out of colored paper.

URANUS, URANUS, I SEE URANUS! :rotfl2:

I think they have planet building kits at Michaels. You could check online or call a store if you have one near you. You could get stiff florist wire and poke those into the big ball and attach the small moons on the other ends. If you do it strategically you could weave thin ribbon around for the rings.

You guys are so funny... you are going to do a model of my anus you need to do one of your own :rotfl2:

I am going to Michaels after dinner and we will see what they have. You guys have great ideas. :teacher:

Sorry, but does anyone remember this joke:

What do the Starship Enterprise and toilet paper have in common?

They both circle around Uranus and get rid of Klingons!!

I can't believe I just typed this!

Be careful about spraypainting styrofoam -- paint can eat into the foam. Make sure you buy a couple to test with.

Yep. Remember it well (but our version was "in search of Klingons").

That, and what did Mr. Spock see in the toilet?

The Captain's log.....

Goin' downhill fast. Guess I'll join the poo thread.......
