My DCL and Carnival comparison

I will begin with the disclaimer that I am a new cruiser. I have taken a grand total of 2 cruises with the family. Last year we sailed the Disney Dream, and this year we sailed the Carnival Conquest.

We had a "dream" trip on the Dream, and as huge Disney fans who are part of the Disney Vacation Club, our instinct was to stay in the Disney family of companies and sail with DCL again. However, our bank account did not agree and we decided to give another company a look.

DISNEY DREAM SUPERLATIVES:
1) As anyone who has seen a Disney ship will attest, the Dream is BEAUTIFUL. It was breathtaking. Unbelievable. Every time we approached the ship, we paused for a moment to admire it and talk about how lucky we were to be boarding something so beautiful. We also joked how the passengers on the other ships docked at the port were probably jealous.

2) The interior of the ship was also very impressive. Perhaps it isn't a fair comparison between the Dream and the Conquest considering the Conquest is 10 years old, but the Dream was gorgeous. With that said, it wasn't like the Conquest was THAT far behind. It is also a very beautiful ship with many interesting details.

3) I liked the Disney stage shows much better. Carnival shows seemed like cheesy Las Vegas rip-offs, while the Disney shows had a much higher production value.

4) Although the dining rooms in the Disney ship were more chaotic (louder -- more waiters seeming to be frazzled), we received our food and drinks in a more timely manner.

5) The Disney kids club was better for our kids. My sons (ages 12 and 10) loved the pirate video game, which can be played by multiple players on the big screen. That kept them busy for hours. The boys never found anything that interested them on the Carnival ship.

6) As a family, we loved the Disney movie theater. We saw a couple of movies and enjoyed it thoroughly. Carnival showed two movies pool-side each night, but several of the choices were horrible. For example, one night's 8PM movie was Amistad. We didn't know anything about the movie and arrived just in time to see women getting sexually assaulted while others were being thrown overboard a slave ship (naked). Ugh.

7) My kids really liked the Disney Mid-Ship Detective Agency. Carnival had a scavenger hunt activity for the kids, but there was no comparison.

CARNIVAL CONQUEST SUPERLATIVES
1) The first one is a big one --- price. We were able to go on a 7 day cruise for the price of a Disney 4 day cruise. On top of that, we had a balcony on the Carnival ship, as opposed to a porthole on the Disney ship. I just did a quick search to compare apples-to-apples somewhat, and a 7 day cruise with Carnival (inside stateroom) next month is approximately $2,000, while a Disney cruise the same month in an inside stateroom is approximately $5,000. Ouch.

2) After reading some people's reports online, I kept expecting the ship to be filled with unruly children and drunk adults. That wasn't the case at all. In fact, I think the kids were more wild on the Disney ship, and the adult consumption of alcohol was comparable. There was more smoking on Carnival, though, which stunk.

3) I loved the comedians. They had four in total. Each night featured a family-friendly show, as well as an uncensored show.

4) The ship was easier to navigate, and the main areas didn't seem as crowded. I often felt like I was running into a bottleneck on the Disney Dream, especially by the elevators. Even though the Conquest was packed, it didn't seem as packed.

EVEN STEVEN -- Areas where I felt the ships were even....
1) The room stewards on both ships were great.
2) Both ships were well-maintained throughout the trip. There were always people picking up garbage and tidying up. Disney might have had the slight manpower edge.
3) Both ships did a nice job with excursions. We took more excursions with Carnival and felt that they organized them quite well. No complaints.
4) The staff overall seemed happy/friendly on both ships.

FINAL THOUGHTS
After experiencing a Disney cruise last year, I left feeling that any other cruise company would be a major disappointment. That wasn't the case. Overall, we were very happy on the Conquest. It definitely wasn't Disney, though. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose Disney in a heartbeat. The major sticking point is price. The biggest question for me is whether Disney is worth paying 2X as much, especially when Carnival has a new ship (Magic) that has a really cool ropes course suspended above the top deck, as well as dueling water slides. While I would love to sail with Disney again, it would have to be on a shorter duration cruise at a time when the majority of the country's kids are in school (so we get lower prices).

In sum, Disney was a better cruising experience, but not necessarily THAT much better to justify the price. If you have the money great, but if you are on a budget, it will be a tough decision. I am glad that I sailed Disney and would like to sail with them again in the future, but I am happy to see that there are some appealing alternatives.

Great comparison! We recently booked our 1st cruise and really had to think long and hard about which line to choose. Honestly, price was really the only thing that made the decision difficult. I think the kids clubs is what made the choice. Also, with it being everyone's 1st experience on a cruise, 4 days felt like a good trial time.

Hopefully, booking >1year means the $ difference isn't as extreme, but still hurts.

Very good comparision.

You may also want to look into the Carnival Breeze (debuting later this year). Not only does it have the waterslides and rope course of the Carnival Magic but it will have some of it's own special features (such as the Hasbro Game Show, Guy Fieri Burgers, Blue Iguana Cantina, and it's more sedate decor as well - brand new colours in the staterooms and not a glitzy - Vegas style throughout the ship).

We are taking the kids on their first cruise and picked DCL due to the kid friendly expectation.

however, more han likely, future trips will be based on Price and we will look more at RCL and Carnival for the points that were mentioned, more value. I know my DCL I could have gotten an extra night on Carnival.

But overall its like telling my kids, let's go to Disney world for the day or telling them, let's go to Busch Gardens for the day. They will enjoy both no matter what.

We sailed on Carnival Conquest as well in 2010 when they were sailing out of Galveston. We had a great time. The mouse it was not but the food was great, Lounge bands, pool, awesome room steward. The younger kids Kids Club is wonderful. My son was 5 at the time and thrilled with it. My daughter was 10 and liked it less.

The mouse is our favorite but Carnival is currently our favorite back up line when Disney prices us out!!

We've sailed both DCL (6 times) and Carnival (1 time as a family - in December 2011 on the Carnival Dream). There are things about both lines that we love and enjoy - many of which you listed. We have two teenage boys and they say that they prefer DCL for the youth program for their age group (we also sailed Royal Carib's Freedom of the Seas in 2009). The boys say Carnival is better than RC's for the tween/teens and that DCL is the best for that age, so as long as they are in that age range, if we have a choice, we'll sail DCL for their sake.

The other thing we liked particularly more about DCL is the movie theater - on the Carnival Dream, there were times when we didn't have anything we wanted to do activity-wise and if they'd had a movie theater, we'd have gone to see a movie.

As far as service and crew, we felt both lines were top-notch. We are big Disney fans but we are also big Travel fans, so it's nice that we like the other lines as well so that gives us more choice based on where we want to go. As it stands now, our next cruise is next summer when DCL goes to the Med. We had been planning a Med cruise with Venice on the itinerary for eitehr 2013 or 2014 and figured we'd be sailing with RCCL (which is partly why we tried them out as a cruiseline in 2009 - this is how long we've been planning it) but had always said if DCL put Venice on the itinerary, we'd do that. As it turns out, our older son will turn 17 while we're sailing so if we'd waited til 2014, he wouldn't have been able to participate in the teen program - so this will be like a last hurrah for him!

I'm glad to hear the positive thoughts about Carnival. I've taken my DD and DGD(10) on DCL 3 times. But I just can't swing it this year so we're trying Carnival's Dream. I think the adults will have a good time (we won't be working) but my DGD is the one I'm concerned about. She keeps asking about other kids she can email (like on disboards) but there aren't many kids on Cruise Critic's Meet & Greet thread. There's just no comparison to disboards... I just hope there are kids she can meet once she's onboard.

OP, one other way to get cheaper prices on DCL is to check out their longest cruises, the transatlantics. We're booked next May on the EBTA. I've sailed solo on one in 2010. It was the best time ever! The cruise fare usually works out to be the cheapest/day but the airfare is much more. But if you can swing it and if you like sea days, you won't be disappointed.

We have only been on one cruise, DCL this year. We re-booked on board for next year out of Galveston. We did get lucky in that the 8 day that departs on our anniversary is the least expensive but several hundred dollars

I priced out RCI when we got home and it was close in price for my dates but much cheaper for the other DCL sailings out of Galveston. If DCL comes back to Galveston we will most likely cruise with them again but if not I don't know that we will be inclined to fly just to go Disney when we can drive and get the Carnival Magic or RCI.

Thank you for the comparision. Glad to know that we are making the right decision for our family, to cruise Disney! All the things that are big concerns we had about Carnival seem true. My DD has Asthma and the smoking definately is a killer...my DD never comes close to smoking people on Disney. The movie you described...I so would have been at Guest Services...that is appaling. The kids Club and the shows...Yep I figured much better on Disney. We cruised RCCL on our honeymoon and I found even their vegas cheesey shows to not be appropriate for our family.
Well I am glad Carnival works for some but thanks for the info to know that paying extra for Disney is SOO worth it!

Great breakdown OP,

I've always argued that both lines offer great value. The people who pay half the price on Carnival and then come on here bashing CCL because it just wasn't the DCL experience always confuse me. Of course it wasnt, it was half the price.

DCL and CCL both have great products and they are both priced appropriately in my opinion.

Thanks for the review! For us, while our kids are little DCL is a good fit. But when they are older and we're more interested in cruising for the ports than the ship (and would like to get two staterooms) we'll go Carnival or RCI.

We like CCL. Love DCL but $$ can be an issue. Go with open mind, manage expectations. Always have a good time.

We sailed on Carnival Dream in December and really enjoyed the ship. The boys had a good time, too (they are teens) and I will have to say I did not see very many younger children although there were 1,400 reported to be onboard ages 11 and under. And it was Christmas week - so Camp Carnival must've kept them seriously occupied!

Here's a link to our Carnival Dream pictures if you wanted a peek. We had a cove balcony cabin (deck 2). Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the Carnival Dream - I'll see if I can answer them.

My last cruise was on CCL Dream. While I can't draw any comparison to DCL (yet)... I was comparing to my sailings on NCL, RCCL and Celebrity...

CCL had its good and bad... I thought their food was very good. The ship's decor was decent (muted tones, and a more "Classic" feel). I stayed in a Cat 11 suite... the rooms was good... not great. Couldn't beat the price.... Crowds were unbearable.... Buffet was unusable. Kids programs were very good (4 year old and a 13 year old). Cabin steward was exceptional...Dining room staff was good... Dining Room Bar service was belligerent.... Regular service staff were just plain bad...

OP and others, maybe I missed it, but how about a whats included on CC vs. DCL. I suck down an obscene amount of diet coke everyday, included on DCL. I just read a great trip report about the Oasis of the Seas (I realize that aint DCL or CC), but every restautrant they mentioned cost extra. It seemed to really add up.

So what isnt free on Carnival vs. DCL

I do know that soda/pop isn't free on Carnival. I don't drink much so that's not a big problem for me. Besides, I think we're going to the store on the way. You can bring 20 24oz bottles per person, I think. It needs to be in your carry on, just like DCL.

Some things in the kids club costs extra. I saw something I thought was like Build a Bear. And the club closes at 10PM unless you want to pay per hour after that. (no thanks)

I figure that even though there are extra costs, I can pay for a few things with the $1000 I saved over our DCL Fantasy I had booked in June...

Thanks for the pics - I'll look at them when I get home from work.

Have cruised Princess, NCL and Carnival, and the only thing on those lines that isn't "free" is the soda....well, I mean as far as the same things on DCL.
There was a $2000 price difference between the one week Fantasy cruise in June, and our one week Carnival Magic (brand new ship) in May.

$2000 buys an awful lot of soda!! But even on DCL, I carry on my own soda because I'm a PEPSI drinker, and I want my soda in my room, I don't want to have to run upstairs every time I want something cold to drink. So the "free" ($2000) soda fountain on DCL is not such great shakes.

Oops....forgot to tell the OP thanks for the very fair and reasonable report/comparison. Personally, I can't wait to get onboard the Carnival Magic in 90 days!!
My husband really loves the Disney ships, but our teen son wanted to do something other than Disney, and I've shown my husband a video someone made of the Carnival Magic, and he's even excited about it...thinks it looks awesome! LOVE the idea of the hot tubs along the Lanai on the sides of the ship.

I also prefer pepsi and bring my own aboard DCL (well, aboard Carnival as well). We do use the fountains when they are convenient and like that soda is included in the dining room.

On the flip side $6.50 per person per day gets you all the soda you like on Carnival so even when I add that to the overall cost, it's still a heck of a lot cheaper. (the only thing that can make Carnival more expensive than DCL for me is the casino - and that's my own fault).

We have sailed on RC but, for us, it comes down to this:

If it wasn't Disney we wouldn't sail. We'd probably go to WDW.
