My daughter is getting her tonsils/adenoids removed thurs

DD had her's out at the end of kindergarten. She had them out on a Monday and by Wednesday was fine and STARVING. We finally settled on a lot of mashed potatoes. They were soft and filled her up. We had a lot of Popsicles on hand too.

Thank you for all the replies...you gave some great recommendations. :thumbsup2 I hope she recovers quickly...right now she has been sick the whole weekend with a really high fever...Thanks again!

Its funny how different Dr's tell you different things- chicken nuggets was one of the things that they told us TO give her and on the second day she was eating wendys chicken nuggetes just fine. They told us to try to stay away from all liquid diets and to have her eat sandwichs of cold cuts etc. I only gave her pain meds 2 or three times in the first day or two, after that there was no need for them. In less than a week she was back to normal and 7 days after surgery she was back at school just not taking gym for a week.
People told me so many horror stories when she was going in that I was really freaked out...sure there are worst cases but not every kid needs pain meds around the clock or much worse ones people shared. The hospital had told us before we left no milk or ice cream. When the Dr called my house later that night to check up on her and I told him that my very stubborn child was having issues with not having milk and not drinking much he said "thats nuts, she can have milk and ice cream-they follow "old rules" in the hospital and there is no reason she can't have it"

I agree with this. Both of my dds had their tonsils out and both did great. A friend of my older daughter had hers out a week before my dd and she was miserable for a couple of weeks while my dd was fine after 3 days. I think the difference was eating!! The first day or 2 I had to force my dd to take the pain meds b/c they tasted gross but as soon as they kicked in, she would eat..scrambled eggs, jello etc. By the second night she had chicken nuggets. I did the same thing with my younger dd when she had them out and she recovered quickly too. Good luck!!

Oh and be prepared, my older dd threw up blood in the recovery room and if i hadn't been warned about that by a friend I would've freaked.

My son had his out about 20 years ago. I bought tons of little toys, like hot wheels etc... (hit the dollar store, they didn't have them back then) and I wrapped them in paper. I had them in a pillow case and every time he drank 4 oz of liquid he got to pick something.
He did great and by day 3 he was outside running around like nothing had happened.
My friend's son had his out the same day. He refused to drink and by day 2 he was in the hospital with IV fluids for dehydration. He also had pain for about 5 days after because he was so dry when he did try to swallow.
My grandson is getting his out sometime within the next month and I have already been stocking up on little toys for him.

My DD had her tonsils/adenoids out when she was 4.5 years old (she's 12.5 years old now). I dreaded it but it wasn't that bad at all. The worst part was when she was in recovery from the surgery. She got really agitated when she was coming out of anesethesia and started pulling on her IV. They had to really tape it down and when it came time to take it out afterwards it was a big ordeal.

I remember that we had to give her the pain medicine every 4 hours for the first, I think, 2 days after surgery. I remember her ENT telling us that on the 3rd day the scabs come off and it would cause some pain; he was right on target. She said her throat hurt - for the first time in 3 days - but she did OK.

But, DD really did well. She actually wanted regular food right away but we gave her cool, soft foods (nothing red though; they want you to be able to tell if they are bleeding and the red dye can mask that). I think she only ate one scoop of ice cream during the whole recovery process.

We bought her all kids of presents to open when she got home....the biggest thing was a Sleeping Beauty dress - - she wore that thing for days.

Even today she'll says "I wish I could get my tonsils out again so I could get more presents". Crazy girl. ;)

Good luck to your DD - and you too mom!
