My daughter has no where to Sleep when she Visits

I had changed her bedroom into a study last year while she was at college.

During her visit over Christmas, I put down the couch cushions on the floor (it's too cold for her to sleep in the living room) and her back was hurting after the 2nd night.

Are air mattress' pretty comfortable?

My dd loves sleepovers and even we will put up the cheap Walmart air bed with a foam pad on it. I love it. I cover the pad with a thicker quilt, and we have a great night sleep. I did not pay very much for both, I can put it up in 5 minutes and get the air out, fold in half and roll up out of the way,,,,

Some love air mattresses, but I can't sleep on them at all. I might as well be crippled the next day from the back pain. I think I'd find a way to incorporate a day bed or loveseat sleeper into the room.

Couldn't you have just changed half her room into a study and left her bed and dresser in there at least?

Air mattresses are cold no matter what you do to them. I would never want to sleep on one for more than a night because I would sleep terribly.
Of course, if all my Mom could offer me was couch cushions on the floor because she couldn't wait to get rid of my room then I guess it wouldn't matter because I wouldn't be spending any nights there anyway.

I hate to say it, but that's what happened with us and my husband's mother. She wanted us to stay with her, but it was either sleep on the floor, a sofa, a broken bed (truly broken in the middle), or bring our own air mattresses. We felt like second class citizens.

IMO, if you're ever going to have somebody sleeping in your home, they deserve a comfortable place to sleep, even if it's a comfy couch.

OMG! No, I didn't change the locks but am thinking about painting the house a different color so maybe my daughter won't find it during her next visit.

I guess my mistake was putting too much detail into my question when all I should have asked was if air mattresses were comfortable.

I kinda agree. It sounds like a banning from the household, rather than going off to college. Did you change the locks too??

While I want my kids to be independant, the college years should be a time when they can test their wings, and yet still have a home and a place/space of their own to come back to. Now after college, that is another story. Expectations change a bit, and I want them to go out on thier own and find a place that is theirs. But home will alwas be home, and there will always be a place for them.

:scared1::eek: Really? :rolleyes:

:lmao: Gee, I bet you never thought a simple question about an air mattress would earn you the worst mom ever award, huh?

What is up with the nasty, sarcastic judgmental people on this board today?

And the answer is, many young people will find air mattresses doable for a night or two. It gets harder as you get older.

But any guest who you plan on having for a while (like a child home from college during the summer, or perhaps even after she graduates while she looks for work) deserves an ACTUAL bed of some sort. Aerobeds aren't THAT comfortable.

For me, I have a day bed I bought used that stays in my office. It can be a single, two doubles, or a king, so it has lots of versatility.

And now that we have a home with two extra bedrooms, one is a dedicated guest room.

Janet, goodness you did get a variety of answers, LOL.

Yes, my Dd swears by air mattresses. Just buy a good brand one.

We have kept the beds in DS and DD's room as they are, and it's a good thing we did.

We STILL don't have enough room for DD and her husband, two dogs, and one infant (crib) to stay over and visit. When my DS gets married, we're going to have to put up a double airbed in the living room when they visit

herc.

My DSD sleeps on a queen sized aerobed and hasn't complained yet.

And to make the OP feel better I have a friend that had her DD pack up all of her stuff she wasn't taking to college and put it in the basement. She has 4 bedrooms (small) - one for her and DH, one for oldest DD, one for DS and one for 2 younger DDs. She said there was no reason for the 2 younger ones to share a room and have one sit empty for the majority of the year. She had her pack up her stuff so that her sisters wouldn't get into it. Her oldest doesn't mind at all and sleeps on the couch when she visits, which is frequently. It's all in how you approach things.

But the other thing is, do you really find it acceptable not to have a bed for your own child to sleep in when she comes home? I think that's what many of us find hard to understand. Maybe your circumstances don't allow for it, however.

And daybe your daughter has totally moved on. I returned home for several months after college....to my old bedroom, exactly the way it was. My parents would have been happy to keep me there forever. But I did move out with a roommate eventually.

In fact, my bedroom stayed the same until my parents sold the house about 15 years after I graduated. And I was a frequent visitor there, and when I married, we were frequent visitors there. And we were likely more frequent because we had a comfortable place to stay.

What about a Daybed? Aren't they usable even when not opened as a bed so would not interfere with the room as a study?

My girls still have their rooms here intact..and one has been at University and College for 5 years now! If guests come of course they can have a room whilst here but they will always be their rooms.

Hope you find a solution..

Is there enough space in the study for a couch that converts to a bed?
That was our solution. Guests can either sleep on the sofabed opened or closed. Either way, it's pretty comfortable.

:rotfl:

Don't feel bad, I was sleeping on my parents' couch for 2 weeks before I moved into my dorm room, as they had already changed my bedroom into their media room. I wasn't scarred for the rest of my life, and I still went back as often as I could during the school year (and summer!) to sleep on that couch. ;)

as someone who does not have a comfortable place to sleep at my parents or IL's, I can say for certain, sofabeds are uncomfortable after they are like 6 months old regardless of how wonderful the salesperson tells you it is. Also, air mattresses, Aerobed or otherwise are also terribly uncomfortable.

My suggestion is to put a day bed in there with a trundle or a twin bed.

My parents actually did, and didn't tell me about it until my key wouldn't work in the lock!! :rotfl: They swear it was all a mix up!

This isn't a judgement about the OP here, it's about her asking if air mattresses are decent. I still have my bedroom at home, but that's because I am home for 3 months every summer and am potentially moving back home next year.

However it is my parents house, if they want to turn my room into a gym/dance studio/den/ solarium, that is their decision. However I would still come and visit them even if I could only sleep on a couch (although maybe not for so long as I do now)

I (as a typical student) have no issues sleeping on an air bed, however maybe not for a whole summer! If it is just for a few days here and there, I would be more than happy to cope with that. I don't find them cold, as long as you have a good bottom sheet, and have a good branded one which doesn't go flat. However we have a very comfy couch which I would probably choose over an air bed if given the option.

.

Hey maybe the Justice Leaque has some left over paint from Wonder Women's plane. Then it could be invisible.:lmao:

The air matress we have in FL has a stand thing & I think that makes it better.

I should have mentioned in my first post that I find air matresses very uncomfortable but it seems that you are getting mixed reviews!

I'd say have her try one before you purchase it and if she doesn't like it, you can tell her to start looking for the house next year because it won't be the same anymore!:lmao:
