I got some junk mail about joining the Navy and my dad got all excited. He wants me to join up and have a good Navy life like my buddy. I really don't have any inclination to go and I'm too old to go through basic training probably (I'm 32!). I'd rather work for a business.

What do you think?

I don't think you are too old but you would probably have some new exclusive thrill rides to add to your list if you did join. ;)

There would certainly be thrills! :D

Not trying to hijack the thread, but my dad wanted me to join the Marines when I was in high school. He was all gung ho about me joining, but I know I would never have made it...I'm personally too much of a wimp!

I think if it's something YOU really want to do, go for it. If not, stick with what you know and love :)

My DH is a 19 year Navy vet and I read this thread to him and his answer was "no, don't do it". If you were looking for honest opinions here I would vote no also unless it was something you were absolutely called to do. Just our two cents.

Sure got ahead! Your fellow boots would adopt you as the "Old Man" and look up to your maturity. And they would probably help you get through the physical parts.;)

yep, my Dad keeps telling me that I should join the army, and won't listen when I tell him that it just isn't for me. He isn't big on listening though.

Hey Barry,
Sorry, unless you have had prior military experience, the cut off for going through boot camp is 26! If you have prior military, then you have to be able to do 20 years before you are 60.
My Dh (20 years in the Air Force) loves it, but he began at 19... I think it is a bit different when you are that young.

Is this a new rule?

DH was 31 1/2 when he started Navy boot camp 6 years ago. And yes, they did call him old man.

The cutoff age to join the Navy is 34.

In the Navy,

You can sail the seven seas

In the Navy,

you can do whatever you please..

In the Navy In the Navy!!!

(Ok, now that I have my Village People stint done)

My family is all military, mom works for the base, my dad is in the Air Force, my sister is either in Army or Air Force (I forget, she just switched not that long ago!). Her bf is either in the Army or Air Force..

I was the black sheep for not going in at a younger age. You can still go in, but you will be one of the older recruits.

The physical aspect can be ardrous. If you can do it, thats great. (I have no doubts that you can do it). Remember you will be taking a HUGE pay cut, especially in basic training area. You may get stationed to a place you really don't want to go.

But you are in a great position to do it though. I could never do it even if I decided to because of my living situation.

I'm sure you will get great advice on this. Personally I wouldn't do it, but thats my beliefs. As for career in the military, my sister has been in the military for going on 15 years (maybe about 13) and LOVES it! My uncle was in the Navy, from high school graduation to late 40's. He got an amazing education (masters degree) for little or no cost.

Cindy B...LOLOLOLOL!

Hey, Barry! Come on up to Norfolk! Then I can "meet" you. :teeth: It's much better than FL any way. (Oops! Did I say that in front of a bunch of people dying to move there?) ;) We were in Norfolk today. Love seeing those ships!

We want you
We want you
We want you
as a new recruit!

Ok, for all the wonderful readers out there.. the lyrics for IN THE NAVY

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports and skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign of for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new seamen fast
Maybe you are too young
To join up today
Bout don't you worry 'bout a thing
For I'm sure there will be
Always a good navy
Protecting the land and sea

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

Who me?

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

But, but but I'm afraid of water.
Hey, hey look
Man, I get seasick even watchin' it on TV!

They want you, they want you in the navy

Oh my goodness.
What am I gonna do in a submarine?

They want you, they want you in the navy
