My dad :) - OT - Newest Update on post 44

Well that wasn't a very nice fathers day gift! I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I am glad he is ok, hopefully it has opened his eyes a bit and he will take everyones advise to stay healthy!! Dad's can be so stubborn sometimes!

I think he will be paying more attention to what his body is trying to tell him from now on. Although, I would have thought that his experiences with my mom would have taught him that. She had lots of medical problems, including heart problems. But, men tend to think they're invincible.

Anyway, I expect him to eventually make a full recovery. He's a fighter. Fifty years ago, he was severely burned. And back then, they couldn't do everything they can do now. They told him that he was going to die. They fully expected it. But him? No way. Fifty years later, he's still alive. He never let his scars get in the way of his living life. And give you his last dollar if you needed it.

So, I think he'll still be alive and kicking for quite some time to come.

Gotta run now. Have to get ready to make the 50 mile drive to see him.

Your Dad looks like such a neat and nice guy! I am sure he will do very well with his recovery - he was so lucky to have his caring friends with him. Hang in there - your love will make his healing easier.

Well, I went to see him today. He's feeling much better.
He's been up and walking around and generally in good spirits.
Nothing keeps him down long.

But, tomorrow, they will be running some more tests. They will then do a scan to see how much damage may have been done.
They will also see if there is any more blockage. Since he is having some numbness in his left hand and arm, and with a 97% blockage of the artery that they opened, it's more than likely that they will.

With the tests and everything else, it looks like they will not release him until at least Wednesday.

But, at least he is feeling and looking much better than he did last night. Although, he's already complaining about the very bland food they're giving him. lol

Luckily, my dad also has another friend who is a RN for the cardiology department at a local hospital. So, when he gets released from Bloomington (50 miles away), he can immediately get a good cardiologist here.

So, keep on wishing him well. He still needs all the help he can get. And thanks to everyone who has already sent me goodwill messages. I really appreciate all the caring from everyone.

I'm glad to hear your father is feeling better. Hopefully he will pay attention to this wake up call and react to medical situations sooner.

Your dad sounds a lot like my mother, right down to the smoking, heavy drinking and generosity. Some people seem to survive no matter what they do to their bodies.

My mother has survived a heart attack, apparently multiple strokes and a very serious suicide attempt. By serious I mean she did her research and overdosed on a medication that was pretty much guaranteed to kill her. It shut down (and should have destroyed) the part of her brain that controls all of the automatic functions like breathing, heart rate and temperature. She flat-lined her EEG. Her kidneys failed and her heart was starting to fail. She had a 2% chance of living and we were pretty sure she'd be on a ventilator for the rest of her life if she did live. Then she got pneumonia which has a 60% mortality rate on its own. Her doctors don't know how she survived and with almost a 100% recovery! She did have some short term memory loss but that's about it. I asked her how it feels to be rejected by death. My cousin said it was because death doesn't allow you to cut in line. Yes, my family is into gallows humor.

Anyway, thank everyone for the prayers, pixie dust and well wishes.

I just talked to him a little while ago and he's doing great. He's even talking about going out and dancing.
The person who did the heart scan (even tho she's not supposed to say anything) told him that she has no idea how he had a heart attack. Besides the one 97% blockage, there is nothing else that she could see.
But, we still have to wait for the doctor to look at it and the other tests.

They moved him down the hall to another room today. And when they did that, they pushed his bed down there while he was walking. He even was pushing it part of the way. One of the nurses even commented "hey, got a mop he can use?".

Everyone is very amazed at him and how he's so ready to get up and go already. A nurse (maybe the same one) said that most of the patients she's seen are too scared to even get out of the bed. But my dad has always lived by the thought that you either stay active and positive or you die.
And dying a very slow and lingering death in a bed is not what he wants.

So, I'm hoping that tomorrow he will be sent home with whatever recouperation requirements they decide he needs.

That is such great news! It sounds like your dad is a bit of a risk taker which is really great in this case. So many people do become afraid to do anything, stay in bed and end up making their health get worse. Kudos to your dad for getting up and being lively! I agree with the "move it or lose it" theory. Also, to be blunt, what better place to take the risk of stressing his heart than in the hospital? Qualified help is nearby if he has trouble. He sounds like a smart man!

I'll continue to keep you and your dad in my thoughts and prayers. Here's some pixie dust too!

Sorry to hear about your dad, but happy at the same time things are looking up for him. Those friends of his in the boat who helped are angels! If your dad had been somewhere else when the attack happened,....who knows what could have happened. Glad to hear about his positive attitude. That, in itself, should prove a blessing in his recovery! Prayers to you and your dad!
