My dad is being admitted to the hospital...

My SIL just stopped by and said that she drove my Dad to the ER earlier and they were going to admit him. he is 85 and hasn't been feeling well for a while - dizzy and tired. SIL said the dr's were saying Atrial Fibrillation. I am waiting for DH to get home from work so I can go up to the hospital.

Please think good thoughts for my Dad that he will be ok!

Is he newonset A-fib? Hopefully they can straighten this out in a day or so. They have probably already given him some IV medicine to convert his heart back to a normal rhythm, then they will probably put him on blood thinners. (there's an increased risk of blood clots with a-fib...the blood might sit in the atria while they 'quiver' and it could congeal instead of pumping effectively through the rest of the heart).

Sometimes if the IV meds don't work, they have to cardiovert the patients. That means sedating them, and delivering a very light shock...it's nothing like what you see on TV when they yell "Clear!" It sometimes works when the IV meds don't.
