I am angry. I was treated like a criminal for using coupons today at the grocery store. I go all the time and have never had this issue before. New manager and new cashier.
Here is the situation
There was a Kebbler (I think) coupon in store buy 2 Eggo products get $1.50 off Shoprite brand bread.

Great I think. I have a coupon for $1 off 2 eggo.
When I check out I am told that is double couponing and I couldn't do it. (in a very accusing way as if I was trying to steal that $1 from the store)
I asked to clarify as my coupon was for the eggo and the other was for the Bread how that was double couponing? To which I was told well if the machine doesn't let you use it, it's store policy.
So I politely take back my coupon and go on my way with my BIG grocery order.

Was I wrong? I don't see anything in the online coupon policy of the store about "double couponing" and really I don't think this would even fall under that definition.

And yes this is over $1!:rotfl2: But every dollar counts!

You were trying to use two manufacturer coupons on the same purchase, and that's never been allowed anywhere in my experience. The free bread was an Eggo offer, and your $1 off 2 Eggo was an Eggo offer, so two manufacturer coupons. Eggo would not reimburse ShopRite for this.

ShopRite stores are part of a co-op, so coupon policies can vary depending on the store. I think the policies have changed recently to limit how many like coupons can be used at our local ShopRites, in response to the Extreme Couponing reality TV shows. The stores also used to take expired coupons a few days past the expiration date, but that is no longer done also.

I had the exact thing happen to me once! I really thought I could use both...argued with the cashier for a bit and she called the manager who let me use both, but pointed out I was wrong. I do it their way now because that was embarrassing and after I thought about it I see how they were reading it.

The store's right. Look at the bar code on the coupons and the bar code on the item - they'll all start with the same 5 or 6 numbers (don't have any Eggo in front of me so can't recall their code) - because of this the computer is trying to match 2 coupons to 1 item and that won't work.

That would be double couponing in our stores also and would not be allowed. If one of the coupons were a store and the other was manufacturer they may allow it, but if you read the coupon it clearly states one coupon per purchase. You would have had to choose which coupon offered you the better deal at that point.

It all depends on the store coupon policy. Print it out and bring it with you.

I can use two different offers at once at one store where I coupon, but not the other.

That would have caught me by surprise too, because the Meijer and Kmart stores where I shop evidently have policy that allows for that scenario. I know I've had that coupon situation on more than one occasion, but have never had an issue arise. The coupons scan through without any problem, with both of them being manufacturer's coupons.

It must indeed vary from store to store.

I love it when I find coupons like that. At least when I was shopping at Publix, I never had a problem like that.

All the walmarts in our area let me do this and both of the grocery stores in my town also(hannaford and shaws)

Yes you were wrong. Both coupons were for Eggos. One gave you a $1 in cash and the other gave you $1.50 off of bread.

I understand! Even if you were wrong, why treat you like a criminal. The darn extreme shelf-emptiers have ruined couponing for all. Not everyone is trying to make a grocery store in their garage!
Sorry for your experience!

I can see why you assumed it would work, but the bottom line is that both of those coupons were Eggo coupons.

Think of it like Disney. when you book a room you can get free dining OR you can get a 40% off room discount you can't use both offers.

So you can only use the product-room, Eggo for 1 offer, free dining or discount or free bread or $1 off not 2 offers for 1 product

both coupons have the sam sku number I probably would have taken it up with customer service and have them read the coupon very carefully. theyprobably would have overrided it for you.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I don't think I would have had a problem with my stores here, but I can't be for sure.

Truly it sounds as if you had a coupon for Eggo and for the bread. You would not have gotten the $1.50 off had you not bought the bread, right? Therefore it is a coupon off of the bread.

Anyway, hopefully couponing will go back to normal in the near future. It is the "hot" thing right now and hopefully at some point people will get bored with it.

the store was wrong but only because they should know that Eggo can't code a coupon for bread so they code it for the eggos. The bread coupon was really a coupon of eggos. You could of used it w/o ever buying the bread and it would of worked.
I really hate when manf's do that because there is nothing saying I have to buy full priced eggos to get the $ off the other item.

At Kroger and Meijer they don't give any issue about those types of coupons.

Thing is that both coupons were contingent on the purchase of the same 2 Eggo products:

Cpn #1 = $1 off of purchase of 2 Eggo
Dollar comes off of total purchase and now the Eggo's are no longer eligible purchases for any other coupon

Cpn #2 = $1.50 off of purchase of bread with the purchase of 2 Eggo's
Since the first coupon "used up" the 2 Eggo products that you purchased, you would need to buy an additional 2 Eggo's in order to get the $1.50 off of the bread.

Not all store policies are this way but I'm sure that more will go this way reeeeeaaaalllly soon.

There was absolutely no reason for the store employees to treat you like a freakin criminal though. Unless you had a hundred coupons to redeem, it's not like you'll now suddenly be able to afford filet and lobster for dinner every night with that extra buck you absconded. :upsidedow

I wouldn't think that scenario would work - but that is no reason to make you feel like a criminal. If you were nice and not rude - they should treat you with respect.

I had that happen to me once. I had $2 coupons for A1 Marinade, and they were on sale for $1.50 - so I actually should have gotten a credit for 50 cents for the rest of my order. The computer at Meijer will not do that. The cashier was very rude. I took my coupon to the service desk, and got my full $2 - after all, that is what A1's manufacturer would pay out to Meijer.

Sorry to hear of your experience. I know how you feel and agree with what others have posted. The extreme couponers along with the show have everyone hating anyone with a coupon - and then treating us like dirt. It was an honest mistake and there was no reason for the rudeness on the cashiers part.

I went into Publix recently and after the cashier rung everything up I handed her several coupons. Maybe 5 at most. The bag boy said "Oh God - not coupons. I hate those things." Like I wasn't even standing there and couldn't hear him. The cashier agreed and they went on to have a discussion about how they hated coupons and the people that bring them in - all as I stood there with my two kids waiting for her to ring them up. Nice customer service...

Needless to say - I am trying to avoid Publix - (it was the first time I had been "back" in a while and it did not make me want to be a regular customer again.)
