She told me that when the ice cream truck played music, it meant they were all out of ice cream. You know when I figured out this wasn't true? IN COLLEGE!!! We were in the dorm room when we heard the ice cream truck and my friend said "oh I'll run down and get us all ice cream!" and my response was "no, when they play music, they're all out!" My friends never let me live that one down!
I love this one! Can't believe we never thought of that with our kids. At our old house, we lived within a mile of 3 ice cream stores. We convinced them when they were young that you weren't allowed to drive to an ice cream store unless you lived more than a mile away so we ALWAYS walked or biked there. The kids would see other people pull in and we'd always say "wow, they must live far away!"
A few more for me growing up - I remember in first grade we got a letter in school and the teacher read where it was from, including the zip code - which was the EXACT same as mine!
Obviously I had no clue more than one family could have the same zip. I was so excited I couldn't even listen to the letter and as soon as I ran home from school, I burst in and asked my mom why she'd written a letter to my class!
Another concern I had about that time was regarding Santa. I was really, really worried that there really wasn't a Santa Claus, but no one would ever tell me because they'd figure I already knew and then when I had kids of my own, Christmas would come and they wouldn't get anything! This worried me for at least a couple Christmases!
The last one was one of my sons. Both DH and I have worn contact lenses since we were teens, so the kids had always seen us take them out, etc. At some point I mentioned to my son (then around 10) something about if he wore contacts later in life, etc. He looked blank and asked how he could wear contacts. I didn't understand what he meant until he explained that he thought contacts were something you were born with - either you had them or you didn't!!
