Alright, I know ya'll are gonna laugh me off the boards for this one! My mom who is the thrift maven extraordinaire, has decided that a visit to 'Ohana is not in the cards for us this trip.:( When I told her how much per person for dinner, she said, "Absolutely not! We'll just have our own little party."

So I have started planning our own little (cheesy) Not Really at 'Ohana But Wish We Were night at the cabins in FW. Once I got started with it, the idea kind of grew on me, and I've gotten a little carried away. I just found an inflatable tiki cooler and tiki totem pole at Big Lots. That got me started...then I found some really cute platters (plastic) for 99 cents each, a straw mat to lay across the picnic table (99 cents also), and large serving baskets for 33 cents each. I also found hawaiian theme decorations at Dollar Tree, so now I'm on a roll! I looked at the tiki lights at Big Lots and thought they were really cute, but maybe not in the budget. I may go back for those, though!

So now I have decided to buy a large bag of potstickers at Costco or Sam's, take skewers and make my own teriyaki, and also make my own fruit tray, (gotta find a really nice fresh pineapple!). Now all I need is a good dessert idea and I'm done. I think if it goes over well, we may do this again while we're there. We decided to trade the 'Ohana dinner for an extra night in the cabins at AP rate.

So if you're riding around in the Fort, and hear a little Don Ho music drifting through the trees, it's just us wishing we were really at 'Ohana, but having a good time just the same! ;)

Oriential Traders also thas lots of theme item...but love the idea, sounds like lots of fun:D and loving the extra night idea..Thanks Mom!!!

I just remembered the tiki straws for our drinks (also 99 cents). There's 5 in a package, so they're perfect for us! I'm still trying to come up with a good dessert idea. I thought about crock pot chocolate pudding cake with ice cream.

I'm still brainstorming here, so if anyone has any more cheesy ideas, let me know. I'm trying to make this as fun as I can, since we'd really rather be at 'Ohana. I think the extra night is great, though.

I forgot about Oriental Traders. Thanks for the reminder, canwegosoon!

Wow you are very creative. I too would take the extra day in the cabins. Hmm, how about a pineapple upside down cake? Or microwave your own carmels to match the ohana carmel dipping sauce and dip your own pineapple in.

I forgot about the pineapple cake. I shouldn't have--that's my husband's favorite!

Well, at least this gives me something else to obsess over. Once I finished with my reservations and ticket purchases, I felt kind of down.

I think you need coconut glasses to drink from.... and maybe some Lilo and Stitch music too! Sounds like you're gonna have a ball- wish I could come! ;)

I've got to look for the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack! What fun! I saw some really cute tiki glasses (plastic) at Big Lots, but no coconut ones. They did have a coconut bra/swim suit top thing, but I know I'M not wearing it! LOL!!!

They had some coconut-like citronella candles, though. That might be fun.

My mom is getting a kick out of this!! Who knew getting cheesy could be so much fun?!?

karebear, my mom is from Oregon, too! Well, not really FROM there, but LIVES there now. It's so beautiful there. She's lucky!

The Lilo & Stitch soundtrack cd was half price last week! It was like $5.99 or $6.99 - I forget which - I almost bought it!

By the time you get all these decorations, you could've gone to O'Hana - LOL :p

Very cute ideas~

You need dessert? um...I am not going to give you the recipe unless you are really going to make it.

It's a simple recipe for Caramel Flan that is so easy it's criminal. The thing that is necessary is CERAMIC CUPS. I capitalized that because that is the determining factor when making this dessert which is so simple...but requires refrigeration for a day before it is enjoyed.

When you serve this after properly refrigerating it for a day...you will be hailed as the goddess dessert maker of all time.

Are you ready to assume this title? Will you be able to make it? My recipe makes enough for 6...make a double? (trust me, leftovers will NOT be a problem.

The only reason I even responded to this thread is because the disney coffee cups at FW are ceramic (unless they have changed in the last 2 years)

I'm starting to realize that, Mollybelle!

I just can't convince my mom about some things, so I went along with her on this one. It ends up that I'm really having a lot of fun with it though! She had the suggestion about staying the extra night for the price of the dinner, so I certainly didn't complain about that one!! ;)

My husband said that 'Ohana sounds like a lot of fun, and he's always ready to try a good restaurant. I think I may just make a PS and surprise her. Her (my mom's) birthday is coming up about a week after we go home from WDW, so I thought about just telling her we would go out for a treat (something cheap) and then surprise her with 'Ohana! I had a PS for there when we thought we were going in May. I told her about it and that's when she balked at going there.

So I'm still planning our little soiree, and just having a lot of fun with it. However it turns out, we'll have a good time. My 16 y/o twins think this is a hoot!!:teeth:

Where is your mom in Oregon? It's rare to see anyone post here that's from Oregon! We live just southeast of Portland (about 20 mins. to downtown). We actually just moved out here about 18 mos. ago- and we love it here!

Thanks, Ozymoe. I sent you a PM

karebear, my mom lives in Corvallis and loves it there. She is originally from the south, and everyone there loves it when she cooks southern things like pecan pie, sweet potatoe pie, dressing and other yummy things. I have to send her the pecans, as I don't think she can find them or they are too expensive.

My daughter and I have been to the beach at Yachats and found it to be beautiful! It's truly an experience to view the Oregon countryside!!

Well I guess there's no 'Ohana for us for sure, so it looks like it's up to Ozymoe to help me out with her yummylicious recipe. Maybe we'll make it to 'Ohana next time, but I think the extra night is great!

But when I first read your post, I thought you were a teen or young adult traveling with a mom.

Then I read that you have a DH who would also like to try O'Hanas.

Why don't you just go to O'hana and tell mom "Thanks for your opinion, but we would like to try this restaurant" ?

Life is too short to have other people tell you what you can and can't do.

I couldn't imagine a mother telling a grown child (and her husband) what is or "is not in the cards" while they are in vacation.

I wasn't trying to present anything in anyway except the way it was intended.

My mother has graciously decided to treat us to the room part of our trip to WDW. That she doesn't have a problem with as I got a really good AP rate for the room. However, she will only go if we stay in the FW cabins, as she would rather have access to a kitchen during our stay and she loved this resort last summer. I am paying for our tickets and other incidentals, and tried to pay for the whole trip, but she refused. I accepted her offer after finally realizing that sometimes in life you really have to chose your battles. The trip to 'Ohana isn't one of them. After talking to her late yesterday afternoon, I realized that it was better to just let it go. We all want to have a good time while we're there, and it is not worth getting into an argument about.

My mom IS very thrifty as a rule, and it really surprised me when she offered to cover the room charge. But this is how she wants to spend some extra money she has saved, and she is so happy to be doing this for us. We are financially able to pay for the entire trip, but I think this way she knows she is using her money for something we will enjoy, rather than leaving it to us when she is gone.

My husband and I talked about this last night and decided that it would probably be more fun to just have the party at our cabins. Yes, it is a cheesy idea, but then again, I'm from small town Mississippi and it doesn't really take much to entertain us. A treat to 'Ohana would be nice, but definitely not worth upsetting someone's feelings over.

BTW, Mom went to Cosco where she lives yesterday and found some kind of taquitos that looked really good. She has now decided that she wants to have a Mexican food night at the cabins. Well, here I go with the decorations again. ;)

I was just under the impression that you really wanted to try O'Hanna's and "weren't allowed".

Now that I have read your last post, I understand what and why you are doing all of this. It is nice to see you are making sacrifices for your mom.

Have fun!!

Thanks for the reply, and for understanding. We are looking forward to having a great time! fI just hope the weather cooperates and doesn't give us too much rain. :D

Just curious, do you have kids? If so, and if you did want to try O'Hanas, why not ask your mom if she would mind if you & your husband have a date night and go just the 2 of you. It sounds like y'all will have fun either way.
