my cat sprayed my luggage

Not happy somehow my dd cat sprayed the luggage. Is there any way to rid the smell?

Just thought I would share a story to give you a chuckle. My friend has a cat that is on anti-psycotic medication. One night she came home late from work and had to change her clothes and leave again right away. She had dropped her purse and briefcase just inside the door. The next morning she was about to leave for work and when she picked up her purse it was dripping. The cat had pee'd in her purse. Her wallet, cell phone, palm pilot and everything was soaked. Obviously the cat was angry at her for not being home. After cleaning it all up she was then late for work.

Can you imagine trying to explain that to your boss. That would be like saying the dog ate your homework.

we had a psycho kitty like that - could not leave anything open or laying around...storage bins, luggage, boxes of mail order stuff...then once the baby came: the carpets, the beds, the diaper bag.....all I can say is get some Nature's Miracle and always have it on hand!!!!

(put her on kitty prozac...just made her more hyper....)

Is it nylon luggage? I've heard that when cats pee specifically on that type of material (luggage and sleeping bags) it's an indication of a possible urinary tract infection.

But to treat the luggage, I recommend a combo of water and vinegar (start with a little vinegar to water and then treat with a stronger ratio if needed). I had a cat pee on hardwood floors and after trying all the name brand stuff, none of which worked, water and vinegar did the trick - and the cat never went back either.

That stinks (no pun intended).

I'm sure there is a cleaner that can get the odor out.

But if that happened to me I would have to throw it out. I would be paranoid everytime I went on vacation that my clothes smelled like cat pee.

People would be shaking their heads in wonder at the guy walking around Disney constantly smelling his shirt.

Good luck to you. I never did find anything that would completely remove the smell (I had a cat that was getting up there in age and was in the beginning stages of kidney failure--used to do stuff like that all of the time, and yes, urinary tract infections are a key issue for something like this--especially if it is luggage, vinyl, or a bag or something plastic.)

I tried almost every pet odor removal product available and nothing completely removed the smell. I would definitely try the vinegar/water thing, but then the luggage will smell like vinegar (at least I would think so)

I did try a lot of febreze as well to help lift the odor, but that's a tough one to get rid of.
If you can wash it with a soap/water mixture as well by hand and sit it outside to dry in the sunshine (and use a fabric odor remover like febreze as well) it may help some.

Thank you for all the help!!! I can not throw it away because it is my dh favorite bag and it was his uncles who died last year so tragicly. It is a sentamental value to dh.. I tried baking soda and I am letting it sit. tomm I will try vinagar. On Sat I will go to pet co to get something.

Our old boy cat did that years ago - Yuck!!! WE tried several things on the market but never could get it ALL out.... sorry to say. Since then, I learned one other trick worth trying (it worked on our mattress - bleh - thank goodness!) It is: after cleaning the object well w/ one of these commercial cleaners (I actually prefer to make up a 10% bleach solution - but most are OK...) put the item out to BAKE in the hottest, sunniest spot you can find, for as long as possible. Now, at first, it makes the stick worse, MUCH worse! But, if you can leave it several days, (take it in at night...no morning dew, or other spraying cats!) it will might eventually smell fine!

Another vote for Natures Miracle...

I also keep it on hand for a regular neutralizer now. It gets out all kinds of smells. They make one for cats and one for dogs.

wet couch cushions and pillows.........soaked them with NM and put the them in the sun.............for several days!!!!!!!

no smell!!!

I have never heard of Nature's Miracle, that sounds like it works good.......but we have used Urine Gone when my cat sprayed a little while ago. It works and smells good.

I am so glad you metnioned that. I thought I was just crazy - well I am crazy - but I thought my olfactory senses weren't working right. I have stinky luggage (no cat spray or anything, it's just stinky - see the stinky luggage thread) anyway, everyone said "stick it in the sun" so I did and the next day it smelled worse! Now my whole living room (small house) stinks like petroleum. So, the luggage is back outside today. I hope it clears out by September!

If you have a Sam's membership, try Odoban.. It is great stuff. When you buy a gallon of it, it makes several spray bottles. It is a concentrate that you add water to. It worked for us when ds left a sippy cup of milk in the car, that leaked and left bad milk odor in our car. My Carpet Cleaner swears by it. He uses all of the time on pet odors.

the good thing about it - is you can make it stronger.... if the normal formula doesn't work for it - wait a day - then make some up stronger.... it will work....

I got DS a kitten last year and it kept peeing all over my stuff. I think it thought the color red=litter box because it peed on my comforter and my red rug more than once. It would pee on the carpet and since I have beige colored berber, I couldn't see that the cat peed until I smelled it a few days later. I ended up giving the thing away because I couldn't deal with it anymore. I don't know how other people deal with cats peeing all over their stuff. I remember having a friend when I was little that had tons of cats and they peed all over everything and their house stunk. It was so gross.
