My son really wanted a hamster. I told him he would have to show me he is responsible first. So, I bought him a beta fish for his room. He had it for a week. He named it and talked to it every day. Well, that was until Friday. Apparently, the cat got into his room while he was at school and knocked over the bowl and ate the fish! I came home and saw it and couldn't find any remains of a fish anywhere. I felt so bad because I was the one that told him to be careful and take care of the fish, then my cat ate it! His 4 year old sister immediately told him "Brandon, the cat swallowed your fish" He was really upset, so we went out and got a new one. It seemed to make it all better, until later that night he asked me "Mommy, why do animals have to die?" I didn't know how to answer that one. How do you explain that to a child?

My son has wanted a hamster for soooo long..........the problem WE HAVE 8 CATS, one of which is HIS CAT and stays with him ALL THE TIME.

HELLO!!!!!!!!! Does anyone else see a problem????

I've been waiting for this one to happen too! My DS, 9yo, has had his betta, Ty, for a couple of years so he has been promoted to a big heavy glass bowl that the cat can't move. My ds, 3yo, wanted a fish, Superman, so he is in a small plastic bowl until I made sure ds didn't mortally injure it (he use to pull the pretty tails off). The fish has survived a few months now so I guess I need to upgrade to the big glass bowl before the cat, who sleeps in that same room, gets the fish. DS would be horribly upset if Superman died (this is the second superman--the first one died w/in two days). We haven't had great luck w/ animals lately: our 15 yr old cat has disappeared (2 weeks now) and I guess she will never be back and our 12 yo golden retriever is on his last leg w/ cancer. We are keeping him medicated so that he will be comfortable and he does get out and play some but it will only be a matter of time. The kids will take it hard since we just lost a cat and the dog will be soon.
:(

Ooooh, I feel your pain! Our cat did the same thing- I actually caught him with his whole head inside the fish bowl! We ended up getting a larger fish tank with a lid that latches. Luckily the cat hasn't figured out how to open it yet!!

How terrible for your son! :(

We had our beta for about 2 years, which is amazing considering that we used them for centerpieces at DD's baby shower, my MIL was bringing mine home for me and instead of holding it as a "normal" person would she sat him on the floor. Yes, his vase fell over, all his water spilled, and when I got home she gave him to me, telling me how she had to scoop him off the car's floor and put him back into the bowl (Thank You???) for me. He was laying on the bottom of the bowl in about an inch of water!!! She didn't even give him more water! All his pretty fins fell off but to my amazement he survived. He just died recently, I'm sure his "experience" may have reduced his lifespan somewhat!

Incidentally, my cat wouldn't eat a fish if I served it to him on a silver platter. He also won't eat table food, cat treats, or drink milk. Silly cat. :cat:

So sorry for your son

At least you can maybe explain it in a circle of life type framework and how it's natural for some animals to prey on others.

I "lost" dd's fish down the drain while cleaning the bowl.... explain that one :(

I have 3 fish tanks, one rather large. My Oscar (who is just about as big as my cat) is the object of my cat's desire. Now, I would LOVE to see who would win THAT battle especially since my fish could probably eat my cat! :p

One year when coing in from my DH Grandmother funeral, we opened the front door to the bird cage on the floor. It had a metal stand. Bird seed, and feathers everywhere and the cat sitting there looking so smug. Our two dogs were hiding in the kitchen. We had left a window open and hoped the parakeet was able to fly out. But while cleaning up the mess my dogs would not go near the couch. We moved the couch and all that was left the poor tweety's head. :faint:

I learned birds and cats do not mix.

I thought about getting a bird and suspending it from the ceiling in a way that my cats couldn't get to it, just to tease them, but the bird would go into cardiac arrest!!! :(

Your poor son.:( But living with a cat, I know how curious they are. And they do have a thing for fish.

My 9 month old siamese has already learned how to open the little lid and the fish tank and have a snack. we are working on keeping DD3 bedroom door closed at night so we don't lose anymore gold fish. It is Funny that when we are in the room and can see here eyeing up the fish DD# says "Tinky is trying to eat my fish again." When the fish end up missing DD thinks they went on Vacation.
