My boss is going to be really mad at me when I get back from vacation.

If my boss asked me to remind him/her I was going on vacation I would have done it because they asked me to.

Personally, I would have reminded the boss about my time off. Plus I usually talk non-stop about my vacation in the days ahead of time so my bosses always know. Just in case though I poke my head in their doors right before I leave on my last day and say "Hey, remember I'm starting vacation tomorrow" But then I like all three of my bosses a lot and don't have a desire to tick any of them off.

The only time I would be tempted not to is when I've worked at companies with a very informal time off policy. I worked at a place like this once and sometimes the boss would want to change his mind about approving your days off. He never actually did and probably never would have but it did make me worry about saying too much about being gone ahead of time, lol.

We all send reminder notes here to our teams when we will be on vacation.

I have 5 people that report to me on a daily basis. I can't keep track of all their vacation schedules - we have too much else going on around here.

It curteous to remind the people you work with on a daily basis that you will be out of the office. I remind my boss - and I remind the people who report to me. No one should have to wonder where I am.

It's difficult for me to imagine NOT reminding my boss that I would be away for week along with other employees that I have been working on projects with. That just boggles my mind. Yes, my boss has it on his own personal calendar, it goes up on the calendar that is handed out to employees and there is also a vacation calendar posted by a copier. Even with ALL of that I remind people. It's commom courtesy. In fact with my boss I start reminding him a couple of weeks before a long vacation so I can get him to complete the things I need before I go on vacation. :thumbsup2

Perhaps the OP needs to clarify some things before we go any further. I still agree with her at this point though. And really, how many people out there have never, not even once, complained about a boss. She is the boss, I agree. Do what you are told and if you have an issue with her, take it to her or go over her head. But that being said, I still think she is getting worried now because she realized she forgot to say something last week. She agrees it would have been wise to do so. But she is also defending herself with the fact that it is right there in front of her boss's face that she will be gone. I agree with that as well. We do need answers on the writing yourself in though. OP OP OP, where are you?

I'm here,I'm here!! I am worried now because I did not say anything.Like I said I just flew out the door because it had been such a hectic week.
I did write myself in the calender for the 11th and 12th because I noticed that she had not put me down for those days.My boss was off Friday so I was unable to ask her about this oversight.I told the other two office woman that I asked for those two days over 2 months ago and the boss did not put them on her calender. They told me from now on to put the days I want off on the calendar myself and not wait for our boss to do so....that's what I did.
Now thinking back I do wish I had taken 2 minutes to remind her and talk to her about it.
Well I guess I hear about it when I get back that's for sure.
Thank you for all your great replies and different points of view.

the only times i required my staff to do a reminder about vacations was if i happened to be on vacation/ill immediatly prior to theirs and that was as a courtesy to whomever might be covering for me (they had access to my calendars but likely would'nt have gone looking for them unless there was a person who no-showed for work). i also asked that when someone was going to leave work early they at least pop their head in my door to let me know they were leaveing (or tell the unit clerk)-this was because too many times people got delayed in leaving and in the event of a building evacuation i needed to account for all of my staffs whereabouts.

with my boss i always reminded him because i used the opportunity to let him know i had done an extended absence msg. on voicemail, an out of office message on email and where i had put anything someone might need access to during my absence.

did'nt have anyone that seemed to mind doing this-the policy some did have a problem with was if they had an unplanned absence they had to call the unit bypass number and just tell someone 'i won't be in today' (didnt have to give a reason) and then be transferred to me or my private voice mail to leave a reason (i reported to work later than some of my staff so the rest of the unit needed to know if someone was not coming in-they'de have to cover). the ones that had a problem with it were those that had excessive (non illness/non valid reason) absences who did'nt want to speak to a live person and preferred to (1)leave a voice mail message at midnight with no reason and then never returned phone calls to see if it was going to be more than one day or (2) liked to claim 'i tried to call in but the voice mail system must have been down-and i was too sick to try and call during normal buisness hours

Just send an reminder email the day you are leaving.

that's what I'd do!

I tell my boss the day before and he forgets :rotfl:

Myco-worker reminds him half way through the day when he asked where i am! :rotfl2:

If the boss asks for a reminder, you need to give a reminder. It's simple. Unless you really don't want this job...

Now, I would be more concerned about that. Did she approve the 11th and 12th and is she going to remember that she approved it? I would call in now and talk to her.

Debden, I wouldn't sweat it - more than likely your boss would have wondered for a few moments where you were when she didn't see you, then remembered the last time she was looking for you that you were taking legitimate time off and so probably looked on her calendar to see if this was the case again.

But I do agree that you probably should have given her a quick reminder before leaving for the week. It's just plain courteous. Should it be office policy?? Courtesy should not need to be policy. It's also this kind of courtesy that gets you ahead in your career.

But I can understand forgetting to send reminders out when you're so excited about having time off. Me personally, I would have sent an email from home just to say I simply forgot, but wanted to remind her I will be out next week, yada, yada, yada.

Let me explain a few things about the office I work in.It's very informal. There's no formal paperwork to fill out to get time off or leave early. There's no formal approvals or disapprovals. It's just let the boss know and as long as no one else is off it's OK.I didn't know until Friday that I was able to write it on the calendar myself and I've been there since January. No one else in the office was off on the 11th and 12th.
We don't have any formal e-mails either. If I had e-mailed her she probably would not have gotten it until she looked at it and that might not have been until after I get back.
Everybody brings up alot of good points I had not thought about. It was not my intention to be immature or difficult.Hopefully my boss doesn't see it that way.I like my job alot.I wouldn't want to lose it over something as menial as reminding her I'm on vacation.
Thanks so much to everybody for the comments and input!

the smaller the company the more the people in upper levels have to be in charge of. I know. We ran a very small hvac company for alot of years. Only 1-2 employees. But I and dh did everything.

I allways remind my boss when I'm leaving early, having a day off, etc. A quick email works wonders.

OP - thanks for getting back to us. I think by now she probably figured out you were not coming in today, lol. Just so you won't be worried your entire vacation, give her a call and do what the other poster said. Something along the lines of I totally forgot to remind you...everything should be fine I would guess.

So then do the professional thing and pick up the phone and call her.

Tell her:
"(insert name of boss here)...I ran out on Friday and completely forgot to remind you that I will be out this week. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Sorry I forgot. - Deb"

Thanks.I'll do that.
