Do you 'remind' your boss when your vacation is coming up? Or when you have a day off or are leaving early one day??
I asked to leave early one day a couple of weeks ago and just left on my lunch hour. When I came in the next day she said I should have 'reminded' her that I was leaving early.
Well we have a 'vacation' calendar in the office and it's right on her desk yet when I get back I know she'll say she did not remember that I was off this week. There are only 4 people in our office including my boss and she's not able to look at the calendar on her desk from week to week and see who's off? I know she was looking at who was off in September last week.Yet I know she'll be mad that I did not remind her of it.IMHO I should only have to put in for vacation/days off once.Should I have reminded her??
Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

If she asked you to remind her in the future, why would you not do that? What's wrong with a simple, "Hey, Jane, remember I'm off next week!"?

Jobs are so hard to find these days. I would have reminded your boss, as a courtesy if nothing else. Hope it turned out okay for you when you went back.

My boss is pretty on top of those things, and everyone in my department has access to the calendar. I only have to remind her if we're discussing a project and it appears it's slipped her mind that I won't be around for something. For some long vacations I have to request it months ahead, so I can't expect her to remember. That's why the calendar's there, so she (and everyone else) can check.

But if your boss wants to be reminded, why not do it?

At one of my jobs the supervisor in charge of staffing would never cover my shifts when I had taken a vacation day. I'd have the paperwork saying it was approved but I was constantly reminding her to schedule someone to cover my shifts. I'm a nurse & I didn't want to leave them shortstaffed, so I would remind her a few weeks earlier. After a while I just go sick of it & I didn't remind her before a 7 day vacation.

Sure enough I got a call asking where I was & did I know I was supposed to be at work. I informed her that she had approved my vacation request & the paperwork was in my mailbox if she couldn't find her own copy. It was very amusing listening to her try to come up with a response. Not that she doesn't still do it, but I'm not going to do my job & her job.

I think you did the right thing. :thumbsup2

If she asked you to, why wouldn't you? Of course she could check the calendar, but I would have done it out of courtesy.

We could remind him the day before and that day he still won't remember!

Do you have access to email? I always sent out a reminder a few days in advance in case there were additional tasks that my manager wanted completed prior to my departure, and another one the day before my scheduled vacation. I also included my department on the email in order to make sure that they were away that I would not be there for the jobs that we shared. I have found that this courtesy went a long way with the relationship I had with my team, and it was returned when one of them needed time away.

If your boss wants to be reminded, I would send a quick email reminding her that you will be out from this date to that date. No big deal.

Because part of earning the big bucks is being able to look at a calendar. :teeth:

Of course, we are smarter than them, which is why we know to remind them of things. :goodvibes

Have a good vacation, and bring the boss back some Mickey ears. :earsboy:

I always remind my boss, I'm just anal that way :teeth:

My boss sits right next to me in the office. There's only three desks and their all pretty cosy. She sits there half the afternoon reading a newspaper and the other half she complains how much she doesn't like her job and she's just here for the paycheck.
That calendar is right in front of her and I saw her flip it to September last week and take a long hard look at who was off when.I'm sorry but I just feel if I've told her the time I'm taking off and she writes it down (she did not write down the 11th and 12th I have off either) there should be no reason for me to 'remind' her of my days off.I know it would not have been a big deal to say 'oh yeah I have next week off for vacation' but it was so busy last week and I just left in a big hurry (I ran out) and did not even think about telling my boss I won't be there next week. She never even wrote down my last two days I asked for: the 11th and 12th.So I wrote them down myself.
I agree I could have said something out of courtesy but as a boss she should spend a little more time staying on top of these things instead reading the newspaper all afternoon long!
Oh well.I guess I'll find out when I go back on the 13th.
Thanks for the great replies!

Well, it could be worse.....you could have to take your boss WITH you on vacation. Like me!!!! :lmao:

Sorry, couldn't resist......I had to do it. DH and I work together and I tease him all the time about "sleeping with my boss!"

I would rather stick a needle in my eye than spend more time than just what I have to at work with my boss. She's VERY high maintenance.

My boss never remembers. I don't think he even writes it down.

I asked off months in advance, so I will remind him right before I leave (although, I talk about my trip almost every day, so he 'should' remember this trip).

I think that a reminder email sent this morning will be better than nothing. Should you have to - no you shouldn't. Should you do it because she asked - that's your call. I would, but that is just me.

I send a reminder email as a courtesy. But my boss had several staf members and I was the one who kept the calendar.

Can you send an email from home or leave a voicemail. Just to CYA! You don't want to spend your vacation worrying about job security!

When I had a boss, I always reminded them simply as a courtesy.

Besides, I always think it's better to cover my butt. When it comes time for layoffs, who will the boss think should leave first? The one who always reminds them when things are going to be different in the office, or the one who puts in the paperwork and then just leaves without another word?

If your boss has specifically asked you to remind her, why wouldn't you comply?

I think I would have at least sent an email to remind my boss that I would be out of the office, even if just for an afternoon, and I wouldn probably have mentioned it to him in person, as well. It is just common courtesy. Yes, it is his job to remember, but I know he has a lot of other things on his mind. I might be thinking about my vacation all the time, but I bet he isn't.

Have a great vacation, and good luck when you return.
