What is it with family members?
people who don't understand that cancelling a DVC reservation isn't like cancelling a hotel reservation.
Mainly just posting to express my sympathy.Krischaser said:![]()
I have a studio reserved for my BIL and now he does not know if he can go. What can I do--I really do not want these points to go in holding. Can I change the name on the reservation if someone else can go? Can I offer it on the trade and rent board? I just don't know what I can do. Thanks in advance.

If they go into the holding account, they can only be used to make a reservation for a stay that occurs 60 days or less from the date you call to make the reservation. Since availability is often quite limited 60 days prior, holding points can be difficult to use. If they are not used prior to the end of your use year (9/30/2007), they expire and are lost to you. Holding points cannot be banked.Krischaser said:Thanks for all the advice I did list them on the rent board. If they don't get taken and go into holding what happens then. My use year is Oct. Thanks again--I love the disney boards everyone is so supportive and informative.![]()

I agree that the late cancellations are less likely if the guests have some of their own money i"int he game". I don't charge, but I since I make plans 11 months in advance, I "make" (OK help) my guests make non-refundable airline reservations early in the planning period. So far, none of our guests have cancelled, and the ones that were considering it had a wonderful time. They have come twice since.JandD Mom said:I hope no one flames me for this but ...
I avoid this problem by charging relatives something. We purchased a year ago and the points were relatively high, so they know we are still paying it off (figuratively, because our break even won't be for a few years and we've explained that). They know they can cancel, but if I can't bank the points or rent them, they don't get the money back. I have made that very clear.
It's unfortunate, but only by taking a little collateral from people do you sometimes get them to understand.![]()

We don't get to pick our relatives!Olaf said:How many times have we seen posts like this? What is it with family members? Why do they so often take advantage of their relatives' generosity? It really is annoying.![]()
