The poor man, God bless him. I've never seen anything like it. His skin was gray, he had sweat pouring down his face, and he was in agony. He fought me for a good half an hour before I finally insisted on getting him to the ER, and then in the car he almost passed out from the pain. I was guessing it was his appendix based on where he was pointing to, but nope. It was a teeny kidney stone, which he passed while we were there, thank God. Theygave him Toridal (sp?) which did absolutely nothing for him, and then finally Delodit (again, sp?) and he had some comfort. This was just this morning and he already feels back to himself completely.

I've had two big babies and very painful labor and deliveries, but I swear this was worse. My sympathies to anyone who has ever gone through it!

I'm hoping he never gets another one!

Your poor DH!! I had one like that several years ago, and it was definitely the worst pain I've ever been through. Like him, I was lucky to have passed the teeny stone while I was at the ER, and felt completely fine very shortly after. In fact, by the time the Dr. came in to see me, I told him "You'll think I'm crazy but I really was in agony a few minutes ago" - then he told me that there was a kidney stone in the sample, so no I wasn't crazy!

Never hope to go through that again, and feel for anyone who does!!

ooooo, my DH has been through that 4 times. REALLY scared me the first time since we didn't know what it was. Not fun. Glad he's feeling better already.

your poor DH thank goodness it was small and he passed it! my dad was admitted to the hospital for one about 10 years ago, and he passed it in the bathroom of his hospital room-he said it hurt so bad when he passed it, he screamed like a girl and both his feet came off the floor!

That's what is felt like to him too. I watched my brother cry wolf about eating too much and how he was stuffed and couldn't move from the "pain". Thirty minutes later he was on the floor pouring sweat and crying. We thought he was playing until the tears started and rushed him to the ER. Passed it but no more soda's for him.

I had to have one surgically removed earlier this year. It didn't want to come out on it's own. It was very painful.

Dilaudid. That's the heavy stuff, my doctors only use it when they absolutely have to. I had it after my knee replacement.

Kidney stones scare me. I'm too young to have them, but I've seen some of my friends parent's with them and they seem agonizing. Hope he feels better soon!

My DH had one several years ago. He went to work durring it! He said it hurt, but nothing he was gona lose pay for. It passed, he lived, and stayed at work.


ETA - Strangly enough, my father had one about 2 weeks after DHs. He went to work to, but laid on the couch in the back office for most of the day. He got done what he needed to, and then went home.

I thought I was too young to have them too but now I know they don't discriminate against age.

Kidney stones in children is on the rise and has been for a few years now.

At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the number of children treated for kidney stones since 2005 has climbed from about 10 a year to five patients a week now, said Dr. Pasquale Casale.

Johns Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore, a referral center for children with stones, used to treat one or two youngsters a year 15 or so years ago. Now it gets calls about new cases every week, said kidney specialist Dr. Alicia Neu.

OP - Glad your husband is feeling better! I watched my BIL during an episode of a kidney stone. He was in agony.

I am over 30 but I was under the impression people with kidney stones are normally older than that. I have since learned kids (even under 10) can get them which shocked me. I had no idea..... The sad thing is they really don't know what causes them so you don't know what to do to avoid them. There are a lot of myths out there but they don't really know. I hope I don't ever have another but there is no way to know. Mine was fairly good sized so it wouldn't pass too easily. It finally dropped down far enough they were able to go in and get it. Hopefully you won't ever have to worry about it. It's not something I would stress over too much. Not everyone gets them.

My husband is 37. His Dad and his 2 uncles have had them, so it runs in the family. His Dad has had 3 stones, so now DH is very worried that he'll have another one. The pain is very fresh in his mind.

If it's a calcium oxylate one, he can prevent future stones by drinking water, reducing salt, and adding lemon juice to the water. Good luck.

Kidney stones are a terrible malady since there is no easy way to get rid of them. You either pass them and it hurts. Or, you get shock wave therapy to break them up, and that hurts. Or, they have to go get it themselves. Needless to say, that hurts too.

Had two -one on each side- during my second pregnancy. Luckily I passed the first stone before the second one started acting up!
The stones hurt worse than the labor!
Wouldn't wish them on anyone! Terrible!

I did it too. The first time I wrote it it came out like "Delautid". Of course, I was on the Dilaudid itself so maybe that had something to do with it.
Yeah, it sucks but it's something that needed to be done. They only put me on the Dilaudid after I woke up out of my surgery screaming and crying. They had me on morphine and for some reason, morphine has never helped with my pain. They resident didn't believe me and just gave me more morphine. It wasn't until after my doctor was notified and it was written in my record that Morphine doesn't help, was I given the dilaudid. It's strong stuff but it's a miracle drug.

I don't know but I guess it could be. It wasn't with me. I was the 1st person in my family to get them.


I know, it's scary to think kids have to endure this pain. I did not experience the pain of passing mine since they had to go in and surgically remove it. The surgery was non-invasive so it was not really a big deal except I got really sick from the anesthesia. That was worse than the surgery itself. Even though I didn't pass it I did feel it when it was moving and that's when my I had my pain. That was bad enough.

They are agonizing (even for women, although they're harder for men to pass from what I've heard) and I had one at 20. Oh, and from what I understand they can be genetic.
