I lived MBFGW. I am born and raised American with a Greek Cypriot mother. We weren't as Greek as the Portokalos family but I had a connection to my Greek roots.
DH, is totally 100% whitebeard American and his family thinks that anything other than hamburgers is exotic.
DH and I flew to Cyprus to get married in the same church my parents got married in (DH's family doesn't really travel and they were there for his first wedding so it was OK, they missed it). When we arrived at the airport, we were mobbed by about half of my very large family, all rapidly yelling in Greek. They whisked us away in separate cars to go back to their houses. I think DH worried that he was being kidnapped. So many scenes from the movie seem to have been taken from those two weeks in Cyprus. Although my YiaYia had passed well before then, DH did get to meet my uncle who would curse "the Turks" on a regular basis.
Our ceremony was entirely in Greek, in fact, the priest didn't speak any English at all to crazy uncle Andreas had to translate our priest interview where we were asking permission to be married in the church. He explained DH's first marriage away by explaining that DH had been a young buck who was anxious to _________ and his explanation was rife with hand gestures. We Greeks are a passionate and expressive people.
Anyway, I liked the second movie but LOVED 1&3.
