My 17yo DS is just back from the oral surgeon where he had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed. Poor baby! He's already starting to get sore and I'm afraid of what's to come. I have a prescription for Tylox, but won't give it to him unless he eats something, but he's not interested in food just yet. I gave him 600 mg of liquid ibuprophen a few minutes ago and hope it takes the edge off.

Anyone have any great ideas on how to make him more comfy? He's had gel ice packs strapped to his head since I've gotten him home. I know "we'll" survive this, but I had to see my kids suffering!

How is supposed to eat after having his wisdom teeth pulled out???
I don't think I ate til the next day..:(
Hope he doesn't have much pain..

My DS had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed 2 years ago when he was 16. The next day he was out on his bike, jumping and riding the half pipe. So maybe it won''t be so bad. He complained a little the first day, but that was the last of it.

I don't have any suggestions, I'm interested in some though. I'm having my 3 remaining wisdom teeth yanked out soon (2 are impacted, I think the 3rd one is too, but it's not bothering me like the other 2).

I hope he gets to feeling better real soon.

I just had one of mine out on Monday. The dentist gave me a total of 40 mg of Valium (30 before the surgery), 1 Darvocet capsule (afterwards) and I had one more Darvocet the next morning. I was out of it for quite a while!
DON'T let him use a straw for anything... the pain will be unimaginable (the suction agitates the sockets and "dries" them out)!!!! I am surviving on spoon-fed smoothies, yogurt, pudding, Jell-O... but I can also manage soft beans and cereal bars (the mushy kind). Mashed potatoes and gravy were the best dinner ever on Tuesday night.
I used the gauze and ice the first day and some of the second day, but keep on the ice to reduce the swelling. If the sockets continue to bleed, the dentist advised me to stick a tea bag on the socket for 20 minutes. Don't give him aspirin, as it will thin out the blood and make the sockets ooze more. I used the No-Aspirin stuff, it works great for me.
Mostly, he'll just have to wait it out. I cried the whole way home (even on all that medication) but in a couple of days the pain will subside. He'll be sore for a bit longer, but he'll survive!
Good luck!

MrsAPalm-Thanks for the advise about the tea bag. I'll keep that in mind if the bleeding continues. He's rinsed out his mouth a couple of time-not a pretty sight, if you know what I mean! He's supposed to stick with a cold, soft diet today-ice cream, pudding, applesauce. He's complaining his throat is really sore and all he's done is drink a bit of Snapple. When he gets up next I'm going to try to get some ice cream in him-that should help his throat.

Thanks for the get well wishes!

I remember having my wisdom teeth out, and it was no fun! I hope he feels 100% better really soon. I took extra strength Tylenol and made sure not to miss doses except in the middle of the night. My mom woke me up to get me to take it every 4 hours during the day. It worked well. {{{HUGS}}} for you both.

I just had mine yanked last week (while just under novocaine).

Yesterday was my first day eating solid foods. I just didn't have much of an appetite at all. I ate lots of mashed potatoes and pudding - that sort of stuff.
And they gave demerol, which made me sick :(

hope your DS feels better soon :)

I had 4 impacted ones removed in June. Did they give him a prescription for pain pills (or is that what Tylox is?)? I took those frequently for a couple days, but actually ate some solid food at the end of day 2, and started back to real meals on day 4.

Just try to make him comfortable, ask him what he needs.

I had mine removed when I was 16 as well. Quite a few years ago in fact. SIGH... In any case... my tongue was frozen when I came home and trying to swallow Tylenol was nearly impossible. Thought I swallow two pills and then went to sleep... Woke up with this bitter taste in my mouth and when I went to the mirror, I found the pill sitting under my tongue. LOL...

I found myself eating soft foods by the next afternoon. Get well soon!

My ds went throught this same thing and he was only given Tylenol#3. He found that taking Naproxen about an hour after he took his codeine made the pain much more manageable. Not prescribing this because I'm not a doctor. Just telling you what helped my ds deal with his pain.

You all are scaring me! I have an appointment to get my wisedom teeth out over the holidays. :( *whimper*

I had 4 wisdom teeth out when I was 17 and the only things I could eat was pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, and plain egg noodles. I dont know if was just my experience but once I took the gauze out the first night I felt a hundred times better. I was warned about dry sockets, not sure if I risked it with taking the gauze out but it sure felt better. I had a prescription of percocet and used it for a few days, never did finish up the bottle (it was strong stuff!) HOpe he feels better soon!

My DD had her wisdom teeth removed on 8/5/02. She lived on what we refer to as an "orthodontic milkshake." It is a recipe that our orthodontist gave to us for my DD's to drink after they'd had their braces tightened. Here it is:

1 envelope Carnation Instant Breakfast (any flavor)
1 banana
1 c. milk
2 c. ice cream

Blend first three ingredients together in blender. Add ice cream. Serve.

This recipe can also be cut in half if this is too much for your DS. And, as was mentioned before, DO NOT LET HIM DRINK IT WITH A STRAW! By using the instant breakfast as a base, your DS will get more nutrition than if he just drank a regular milkshake.
