Hacienda de San Angel - dinner

Of these, the only one I have done before is Akershus. Opinions? Advice? we will have some picky kiddos with us. Will they find something good everywhere? I'm a little concerned that the rest of the fam won't care for Boma. I have read such glowing reviews, though, that I decided to book it anyway. My dad and I will eat anything. The rest of the group, I'm not so sure. If you've been to Boma, I'd love to hear about some of the menu items.

We hated Boma. Not because the food was bad, but because we don't like the flavors they use in the dishes.

African spices that they use are cinnamon, vanilla and fruits...and they are in everything! Literally everything. I am not kidding. The carving station where the beef, chicken and salmon was, the beef and chicken were rubbed with cinnamon. The salmon was a honey glaze.
All of the side dishes had a sweet tone to them, whether it was heavy or light, you could still taste the sweet in them. Veggies, potatoes, even the soups were sweet. We couldn't find anything we liked, and tried to eat off the kids station...nuggets, mac and cheese but was still not satisfied. By the time we sampled every dish trying to find something we could eat we left unhappy. Not by anyone's fault but my own. I had been warned this restaurant was spicey, but I thought people meant "hot peppery" mexican type spicey....boy was I wrong!!! :scared1:

Many people love Boma and say even their picky kids like it...I say it is because everything tastes sweet. LOL

There is usually a debate when someone asks about this restaurant because those who love it love it, those who don't...well the people who love it, don't understand, they think we try and slam it. I don't, I tell it like it is. The food wasn't bad, just not what we like.

chef mickey and Ohana are the only other 2 I have eaten at on your list and love both.
Ohana being my favorite in all of WDW. I love everything about the food here. The restaurant can be slow, so make sure you aren't on a deadline when eating here. And if you are a beef eater and don't like well done, make sure to ask for what you like, as they normally bring well to the table. Oh and save room for dessert...best on property!!
And CM is always on our list. This buffet is always good. The beef is med/rare and tender, the sides are all good and the mashed potatoes...oh mashed heaven!!! The desserts are ok, nothing to brag about but if you are a beef eater you can definitely get your fill.

Hope I have helped you out, enjoy!!

I loved Ohana!

Of the list, I've only eaten at Boma and Hacienda. Unlike Nadjalu, I really really enjoyed Boma as did my Mom (in fact, it was one of two places she request to repeat for this year). I don't particularly remember excessive sweetness, but I most certainly don't remember much other than the desserts now....

However, I will agree that it may not be for everyone's tastes and just because I didn't taste the extra sweet and Nadjalu did, doesn't make either of us right or wrong :) (How's THAT for a PC answer? :p). (And also, a week from tomorrow (erm, today now!), I'll have a much fresher recollection.)

Edit: In all the PC-ness of the Boma response, I completely forgot about Hacienda!
One thing to keep in mind is that I visited Hacienda about one week after it opened, so they were still gearing up.

I found it to be quite good, not excellent, but still very good. The non-excellent factor I am attributing to eating too early and not really feeling well that day too. I had the.. um... Queso Fundido for an App, the Arrachea for entree, and a collection of traditional ice creams for dessert. The dessert was VERY good and they had a tamarind flavored one that was spectacular (it was that, watermelon and some yellow flavor that I've since forgotten, mango? though that's not Mexican... lemon? no idea.)

Cape May - It's good for breakfast, not too bad on the bank. Still a bit expensive for what you get, but hey! that's Disney. My niece who is picky as heck, only ate fruit and waffles.
Ohana - Fun for kids, great place to watch Wishes. Food is served family style. I'm not too big on Character Dinners mainly because that's what you're paying for and it feels as if they only spend 15 seconds at the table.
Boma - Might be a bit tricky for your picky kiddos. The flavors arent the norm. I believe they have an area just for kids though (mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, etc)
Chef Mickeys - was not a favorite for my niece. She didnt like how noisy it was, and how long you had to wait even after your ADR time.
Hacienda - This place was just too fake-fancy for us. It was dressed up mexican food. The area is nice, but we felt crowded in the restaurant. The server barely acknowledged us.

No opinion on the other two though.

With picky people, I think you picked a good lineup since they're almost all buffets.

Cape May had an excellent breakfast in terms of food quality and character interaction. They have standard breakfast fare and few unusual items like asparagus and bread pudding, so that should be somewhere that it's easy to please everyone.

I haven't been to 1900 or Chef Mickey's anytime recently, but they have a lot of standard items for kids, so again, they should have something to accommodate everyone.

'Ohana can accomodate kids with some standard kids menu items like pizza or hot dogs if they don't like the regular dishes.
I enjoyed 'Ohana a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn't expecting it to be that great, but 80% of the food was really good.

I thought Boma was good, but not great. I would say to keep it on the list and give it a try. Most of your other picks serve pretty standard fare, so it's not a huge deal if your family ends up not liking Boma - it's only one meal.

I haven't been to Hacienda or Akershus.

Cape May breakfast was good. Food was ok but characters were nice. Very rushed though!

1900 Park Fare I have been trying to get and my last trip was not successful. Enjoy!

Ohana our FAVORITE!

Boma one of our favorite buffets. The only other one we like is Tusker House breakfast! I don't get the hype about the "sweet". Our food wasn't sweet at all. the meat was delish!

Akershus had lunch there and loved it! Characters were not rushed as much and it was a wonderful lunch!

Hacienda -- never tried it.

You did well!

Cape May - breakfast >>> great breakfast!! Loved that its one of the quieter buffets with yummy food, great selection. :)
1900 Park Fare - dinner >>> step sisters are hilarious! But i was disappointed with the food.
Ohana- Dinner >>>if you time your ADR right, its a great place to watch wishes!!
Boma - dinner
Chef Mickey - dinner >>> I personally wasnt impressed with the food. But you will find something you like. Character interaction is great thou!
Akershus - dinner
Hacienda de San Angel - dinner

:goodvibes

1900 Park Fare - I didn't particularly care for this place, but I think it's fine for picky eaters. I felt that there weren't a ton of options, that those they did have were pretty boring, and that the quality of food did not make up for it. It's pretty hectic, but the characters are nice. Again though, if you're with very picky eaters, they may be more content with the options here than I was.

Ohana - I like this place a lot, except for the fact that it's the one restaurant where I've consistently had to wait well past my ADR time to be seated. The food is great, although sometimes the service can be slow. If you go in for a leisurely dinner, I think you'll enjoy it (especially the decadent bread pudding dessert!). They do have some fun activities for the kids to keep them entertained.

Boma - I love Boma. I don't think you have anything to worry about for the kids, as there is a separate buffet area with more American kids food (I'm not going to lie, I tried the mac and cheese myself and it was awesome!). I don't think that literally everything there is sweet, but if the adults in your party really don't like different herbs and spices, I'm not sure they'd love this place. It has a ton of tasty options, including unique dishes you won't find on other Disney buffets - but clearly it's not for everyone.

Akershus - My favorite princess meal! I haven't been for dinner, only lunch, but I really like this place very much! A photo with one of the princesses is included in your package (the princess rotates - one time we went it was Ariel, the next time Belle), and the princess interaction during the meal is fabulous! Not rushed at all - seems more laid back than other character meals. I like that there's a cold buffet so you can snack while your meal is being prepared. I've heard many people say they won't come here because the food sounds weird, but it's really not that different - think ravioli, roasted chicken with veggies, etc. Definitely one of my favorite character meals on property.

Hacienda de San Angel - I can't speak to the kid's menu here, but this is one of my new favorite restaurants! We had a seat right by the window, overlooking the water. The service here was absolutely wonderful and our food came out quickly. Everything was hot, delicious, and tasted fresh - great quality. Ask for the margarita flight! I'll definitely be back.

I hated Chef Mickey's. The kids enjoyed the fun atmosphere with the characters so it was worth one visit. The food was not good and it was not clean. There were birds in the dining area that had gotten in because of the open air set up there. We would not go back.

We love Boma and eat there everytime we are in Orlando even if not visiting Disney. I have found that the flavors seem a bit more Americanized than the first time that we ate there ten years ago but it is still good.

Others on your list we have not done for dinner but we love Kona and 1900 Park Fare for breakfast and our all time favorite for dinner is Artist Point.

The only one I have eaten at is Boma. We enjoyed it and didn't find anything too weird on the menu. The soups are all wonderful. I really loved the chicken corn chowder and there was carved chicken, beef, and I think I remember pork too? The bobotie was like a hamburger quiche and mild flavored and good. The mealie bread is just a cornbread muffin. So the food is common to American diners but flavored ever so slightly different. A lot of dishes were sweet had a slight cinnamon taste though which was different and a bit of a surprise at first, but really good overall and we will return. It had a good variety so there is a little something for everyone even picky diners like myself. I was apprehensive too when I booked our dinner for our anniversary and we paid OOP and would do it again.

#1: OP says a "7-day trip", then lists 7 TS meals. If you are on DDP, remember that you have 1 credit per NIGHT you stay, not per DAY. If you have a 7 day/6 night stay and are on the DDP, you only have 6 TS credits.

Cape May breakfast - have not been but see lots of good reviews for the food. Only issue is getting there. Unless you are driving/taking a cab, you have to take the bus from CR to DHS, then the boat from DHS to BC/YC. You can't just take the bus to Epcot if the ADR is early, because the bus lets you off at the Epcot front gate and the Epcot-area resorts are accessed from the side gate (International Gateway).

1900PF dinner - food is OK and characters are great fun!

Ohana - Fun for kids, great place to watch Wishes. Food is served family style. I'm not too big on Character Dinners mainly because that's what you're paying for and it feels as if they only spend 15 seconds at the table.

??????????? There are no characters at Ohana dinner. Periodic entertainment for the kids includes limbo contests and parades around the center of the main dining room. Food is great and we love the entire experience here.

Another Boma fan here. I noticed that while they may always have the basic meats, the preparation changes. But it no longer appears to be on a scheduled rotation. For instance, the first time we went the salmon was crusted with pistachio nuts; I would not consider them to be "sweet" but it was a very different flavor combination. When we went back, the salmon was in a pan topped with multi-colored peppers and was 3-alarm-fire-spicy-hot. I don't do spicy-hot. But there were loads of other things on the buffet that I enjoyed. Do check out the soups; on a lot of buffets in the real world they're pretty forgettable/Campbells, but at Boma they are star attractions. And Boma does also have one section of the buffet that has your classic kids meal nuggets, cheese pizza, etc. There are salads and fresh fruits, some interesting breads and dips, and some really neat side dishes. A rice with some bits of raisins was tasty. And the dessert table is really, really good.

Chef Mickey - have not been but it is a classic for kids because you get the Fab 5 characters. It looks to be a pretty straightforward buffet with a lot of basic American food choices.

Akershus - we loved this restaurant when it was non-characters and more authentically Norweigian cuisine. We have not been back since they changed it. So long as you have checked out the menu, it's a good Princess opportunity and only 1 TS rather than the 2 TS credits needed for CRT. Plus you will already get Cindy at 1900PF dinner.

Hacienda - have not been.

Looks like a good cross-section of dining choices; enjoy!
