We just got back from the doctor's and he's saying that they need to come out as soon as possible.

The problem is that his earliest operation date is Dec. 22nd and that the recovery time is 7-10 days so....we're scheduling it for that day so she won't miss too much school BUT I'm all upset since that will mean a recuperating child during the holidays and she'll be so upset that she probably won't be able to go to lunch at AGPNY on the 30th :sad1:

From our experience, I would think she would be fine to eat without any problems by the 30th. The first two days were always the worst with my boys and my nephew.

When my son was 6 he had surgery on his ankle on Dec. 22. Everyone thought I was awful for doing that to him, but he was fine. He sat on the floor and crawled on Christmas day, and by the time school started, he was good to go in his walking cast.

It is a toss up on how she will be. When my son was 4 he had them out and he still did everything but didn't eat for almost 2 weeks! He drank a lot but no food. at his 1 week check up they said soft food nothing with sharp edges. I think it really depends on the child.

In the long run it will be the best thing!

Good luck!

She should be fine in a few days after her surgery. When i had mine out at that age I was recovered almost fully in 4 days. Just make sure she takes it easy. My sister on the other hand was eating chicken nuggets an hour after her sugery.

And its almost certain that the place will have something soft she could eat if she happens not to recover.

I think that too

I agree. It's long enough that she should feel well enough to go out. And I'm sure she will be able to find something to eat there.

I'm sorry, though...a bummer to have to do it around the holidays. Hope she feels well enough to enjoy everything :)

awww big:grouphug: for your DD!!! I have never been through that surgery, but many others with DD8 and I know you are sad, stressed and scared all at the same time. I wish your DD a speedy recovery!!!

I am so sorry she has to go through this. It is rough. I really hate to be a downer but your DD will be in the most pain 3 days after the surgery...This will be Christmas Day. We just went through this with my DD in April. I know that everyone knows someone that was just fine and eating hard food right after but I wouldn't really count on it. My daughter was in agony from day 2-5. She was on medication but it only took the edge of the pain off.

My daughter had her tonsils removed in March and they did use the coblation technique that someone mentioned. The doctor wanted her to eat regular food and drink constantly immediately after surgery. We went for breakfast at AG in Dallas maybe 4 days after the surgery and she got the Bitty Twins. I felt really sorry for her. She took tylenol every 3 hours and she was okay during the day. The only time that was really bad for about 1 1/2 weeks was night time when her throat dried out, which in turn caused her to run a temp. I would say don't cancel your visit to AG if you don't have to. It was the best thiing I did for her while she was recovering. It was a happy distraction. Just time the meal a little after she takes her medicine and b4 she will need another dose. Oh and if it makes you feel any better my dd was sick every 2 weeks for over a year and since her tonsils have been out she hasn't been sick at all. I'm amazed at the difference. Good luck!

American Girl Place New York?

Anyway, don't think twice about this - I had my tonsils out 2 years ago at 29. It was the best thing I ever did for my health and I really regret that my ped talked my parents out of me having the surgery when I was you child's age.

Most likely she will be fine. My ds had his tonsils and adenoids out AND had both hands operated on at the same time. I was anticipating weeks and weeks of recoup.....but darn if those little ones don't bounce back quickly! He couldn't use his hands for weeks, but in terms of the pain and eating, it came back quickly.

My son had his out in July. He is 5. Luckily he got an overnight stay & hydrated with IV fluids otherwise he would not of drank.

It took a good week for him to really start to eat again & he went from weighing close to 40 lbs to 32 in a weeks time from not eating.

I'd say by the end of that first week he was more active.

I know how you feel! My DS had his removed on November 5 (Wednesday). He ate only cold stuff for the first few days. By Saturday he was eating scrambled eggs, noodles, stuffing, bananas, thinly sliced ham, etc. By Tuesday he was eating pretty much whatever he wantedm including bacon and eggs...though he decided to skip pretzels and chips!

I think she'll be fine 8 days later at a breakfast! Do yourself a favor though and find out where the nearest icee machine is! My DS wanted only icee (slushies) Wednesday night and most of Thursday.

My DS-8 and DD-6 had their tonsils out at the same time. They were miserable for about 9 days.

One would only eat warm foods such as soups and mashed potatoes. The other only wanted cold.

They both were on pain medication. I tried to give it to them every 4 hour even if they didn't ask for it. If I waited until they hurt, they were to sore to take the meds.

They worst for them was around day 5 when it started to heal.

Is there anyway you could do this after the holidays? I don't want to scare you...but everyone told me my DS7 would be great after a few days...wrong. He didn't eat solids for 2 weeks, and was in pain for a week and a half. He was suppose to miss 5 days of school and missed 10 (pain at first, and then because he was weak from not being able to eat!). He has a strong gag reflux, and that "healing" at the back of the throat really bothered him. It will look and smell really bad for awhile. The "healing" at the back will slowly come off. Why is she having them out? I hope that your little one does well.

This thread is so timely. My DD7 and I have an appointment with an ENT tomorrow about removing her tonsils. She has been sick almost monthly, sometimes more frequently, since Oct. 2007. I know it will hurt, but it will be so much better in the long run, I hope!

All three of my kids have had their tonsills and adenoids removed. The boys for severe sinus and ear infections (too many to count!) and my daughter for sleep apnea.

My boys had theirs out a few years ago. They were 2 and 4. They were both eating right away. Days 3-5 were pretty bad. It was a good week and a half before they were acting themselves.

Our daughter had hers out last November with the Coblation laser surgery as others have mentioned. She had a bad reaction to the anesthesia so, she was pretty miserable the first 24 hours or so. She did okay the first couple of days and then just like her brothers, she got worse towards day 4 or so for another few days. She wouldn't eat or drink anything and she refused to take her pain medicine the Dr gave us. We could only give her Tylenol which just didn't cut it. It was not a pleasant 2 weeks. After she got past that hump she did really well though. She started eating and drinking again and was able to go back to school. One warning, when their throats are healing their breath is terrible!:scared: No one warned us about that with the boys. Yuck!

Even though their recoveries were tough, I would do it again in a heartbeat. (Our son's adenoids actually grew back so, we did have to do it again with him). It made all the difference in the world with both issues with my kids. The boys hardly ever get sick anymore. They are now 11 and almost 9. My daughter has never had another sleep apnea issue again.

Best of luck to you and your daughter!
