Another year is about to bite the dust. Mine was, for the most part, OK. It started out, as it usually does, with January and February. No matter how you slice it, in Vermont, that is considered the winter doldrums. It's fine for those that are foolish enough to strap extremely slippery slates to their feet and go head first down a mountain side at warp speed, using trees, ice formations and other skiers as a means of slowing down, but for the rest of us, it's just cold and uncomfortable.

March brought some refreshing change as I boarded a plane and headed south to take advantage of Disney's 4 will get you 7 deal. For the first time ever I actually stayed on site. It was alright, but not all that impressive to me. I travel alone and frankly there wasn't a lot to do other than visit the parks and watch a very poor selection of TV channels on the Disney network. That said, it was still fun and a great break from the weather.

This year was the year of the never ending winter. It was still dragging on through April and didn't seem to be willing to let go at all. So April, May and June was unusually cool but at least by May it had started to warm up a little.

In July, along with having yet another advanced age birthday, my youngest daughter, son in law and grandson uprooted and headed for that well known Containment Area for Relocated Yankee's...Cary, NC. I drove their household belongings down for them in a rented truck and found the area to be really nice. I was stretched emotionally because (down side) my youngest was moving away from the nest. I knew I would miss her terribly (and I do) but (up side) I was also proud of her for having the courage to leave everything that she knew and have a new adventure. She and they seem happy with their now surroundings and that's a good thing.

August and September was spent learning my new job as area field supervisor of one of our satellite bus companies in a more rural area of Vermont. Actually several rural areas in Vermont. It was a constant defining and redefining of requirements and obligations. Stressful but I was able to handle it alright and then along came October.

October started off OK but somewhere near the middle I decided that things had been going to well, so while going down a flight of stairs I managed to miss a step and fell on my knees onto a concrete floor both dislocating my knee cap (minor) and completely severing that large muscle just above the kneecap (glut) that enables one to lift and/or move the lower leg forward and lift ones weight up a stair, etc. (not so minor) I had surgery on it and spent almost nine weeks getting my leg to work well enough to return to work. Since it was a Workers Comp. situation (it happened at work) I was fortunate enough to at least have had an income during that time and expenses paid, but, as a man, I can tell you that there is just so much Rachel Ray one can tolerate.

Anyway that took care of October, November and most of December. The other down side was that I had to cancel my plans to be in WDW on the 8th of December with my other daughter and her family. Pure bummer!

Next Monday I start back full time with just a mere 10 days left of the year. I would like to say that in spite of the injury the year has been not awful. I still have nothing (known) that is of terminal consequence, my family is happy and most importantly healthy, my Christmas shopping is done thanks to a lot of time and the internet, I still have my job and the list goes on. I am truly thankful for my continued good fortune and want to wish everyone the best for 2K10.

As a native Vermonter, I laughed at your description of Jan & Feb. My friends & I always said that if God had intended us to ski, our feet would have been longer.

You didn't mention my favorite VT season, mud season in March. Watch out for unpaved roads...

But where am I moving next year? Yep, back to VT. I retired this year, and couldn't think of anywhere I would rather be than back "home".

Glad your knee is better and hoping 2010 goes well for you.

Thank you, I am looking forward to 2010 and am ever mindful of how many people are so much worse off then me. Even the injury was one that I could recover completely from (still have a way to go to be 100%) but once things started to heal, progress has been pretty rapid. When I think that three weeks ago I couldn't maneuver without a crutch and now I am walking with hardly even a limp...I am truly grateful.

The biggest and best thing was the revelation of how quickly your life can change. I had to become, for the first time, defendant on others to help me accomplish even some of the simplest tasks such as washing my hair. My heart goes out to those with lasting and debilitating problems that they possibly won't be able to recover from. That must be an awful feeling. Anyway, be careful and live life as completely as you can. Stop and smell the roses because it can all be taken away in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the reminder about how important it is to cherish every day as we never know what might happen. DH and I always try to remember to count our blessings and appreciate everything we have and how truly lucky we are. Best wishes for a continued speedy recovery and wonderful new year.
