My 2 cents worth on Dining plan

We just got back after 8 days in the World. Our package included the Disney Dining plan. If I could sum the program in one word, it would be EXCESSIVE! We ranged in age from 10 -43 and there were 5 of us. To allow us to go to the California Grill and Hoop De Doo, we only used 4 table service credits except for Hoop De Doo and Chef Mickey. The wait staff were great! The only problem we had with the program was at Wolf Gang Puck Express. We ate there for dinner and again the next morning for Breakfast. I could tell by the server's attitude (and he was the manager) that he was less than happy about our business. When I confronted him on this he backed down a bit and explained that he was forced to participate in the program but it wasn't always in his best interest. He explained that Disney skims some profits off the top for meals purchased with the Dining plan. For example, if the total bill was $18, he would get $14 and Disney would get $4.

Every place we went tried to get us to take all the food that was assigned for the respective table or counter service credit. In other words, the TS establishments would all but jam down our throats 4 apps, 4 entrees, 4 drinks and 4 desserts. Anyone who has been to DW knows that Disney portions are pretty big. IMHO there is no way a family can eat 4 appetizers and usually we don't even eat a dessert at all! Usually when I go to a restaraunt I order 1 (or 2) apps for the whole family. One appetizer would have easily fed our whole group comfortably let alone 4!

So you say, then just don't order all that food. Two thoughts on that. First, the wait staff almost makes you feel guilty if you don't order all of it, given that their tip is based on the total bill. Second, the dining plan is billed as a cost savings. This is true on ONE condition...you eat yourself sick. If you truly eat, per person, 1 app, 1 entree, 1 desert and 1 drink, then you will save money. If however, you are not used to this much food, you will actually lose money. We went to DW last year without the dining plan and spent about $600-700 on food for 7 days. We all ate well and shared several meals. This time we went with the dining program and spent $1300, also for 7 days and gorged ourselves. Kind of a tough way to "save" money. Needless to say, alot of food was wasted since we just could not eat it all. Same goes for counter service credits. A typical breakfast entree was eggs (probably 3-4) scrambled, 2 sausage patties, 3 bacons slices, a biscuit and a generous helping of potatoes. Now...do you eat this much food at home? So if we decide to order fewer meals and share, we will have TS or CS credit left over at the end of our trip. So much for cost savings!

One thing I left out, last year the cost for food came out of my pocket. This year someone else paid for the dining program. So even though it cost twice as much, it was free to me so I benefited from the program. However, if I was paying out of pocket for the program, I would say it is NOT cost effective (unless you eat 3000+ calories a day normally!).

PS...One thing we did, although I don't think it is encouraged, we would ask the wait staff to give our desert credits to another table and in the process brighten their day :sunny: (and save our guts).

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry that the dining plan didn't particularly work for your family. However, I don't necessarily agree that you have to normally eat excessively for the dining plan to be cost effective. For example, if I eat dinner at the Crystal Palace it will cost me 27.99 (plus tax and tip, but we'll that leave aside for now). With the dining plan costing 37.99, I would only have to spend $10 more to break even. Considering that the snack credit is worth 2.50, I would have to spend less than 7.50 on counter service to save money. With the cheapest entree at a place like Tusker House being 7.00, that would be difficult. It really depends on your eating habits and the places you like to eat. Even if I just broke even, however, I would still like having my dining paid for in advance. :thumbsup2

We also spent the money on the dining plan for our trip this past December, and we intend to do it again on our trip this coming November. The food is very plentiful, but I also recall leaving prtions of each course at almost every meal so we did not over-stuff ourselves. Most people I know do not finish everything they order when they go out to eat anyway. If a person has a compulsion to "clean their plate" as many parents like to instruct childen, they would walk away with a stuffed feeling.

I enjoy the opportunity to experience the differing flavors of each course by sampling from each others choices; this allows our family the chance to taste many things at each meal while also creating a very memorable experience we can share as a family for years to come.

Yes, you can eat cheaper if money is the bottome line, but if you factor in the overall experience and exercise some restraint the dining plan can be more than worth the money. IMHO :thumbsup2

The last few times we have went we did not use the dining plan. We still ate at the Crystal Palace, Chef Mickey's, Resturantantosaurus, etc. We tend to go for the buffet's and or family service meals to please our children. Not to mention we love having all the characters come to us. We have paid dearly for these meals over the years. We sit down and figured up what we spent last year on food, and decided that the dining plan was a better opt. for us this year.

One thing we are doing is sitting down to figure out how to make it work best for us. If we want to use the plan for the more expensive breakfast, lunch or dinner...Chef Mickeys for example cost roughly $10 more for dinner than breakfast. If I were paying out of pocket at the time of the meal I may lean toward Breakfast...but since it is all one price for me now, we can do the dinner just as easily. With my DD now being 12 she is charged the same as an adult, so that makes it a $30 difference right there before my younger son who rate only goes up about $3. Different pricing for different times of day make a difference towards if it is worth it too.

My reason for doing the dining plan is to have the freedom to order whatever I want and not look at the price. Everything is paid for and I can just relax and enjoy my food without worrying that I am spending too much. I know that for myself...if I did not pay for it in advance and I had pay at the time of the meal I would be looking to eat at the cheaper restaurants and ordering the least expensive thing on the menu because I would be worried that I am wasting too much money.

Peace of mind is more important to me.

It wouldn't work well for us either because we eat a sit down character breakfast or at Boma in the morning and then eat dinner which is 2 TS meals. DD and I wouldn't eat counter service at lunch too. DH and DS would and it would be great for them, but everyone in the room has to have the plan. I would buy it for the boys in a heartbeat!

I know there are many who disagree. This has always been my thoughts too. We are all light eaters, but drink lots of fluids when on vacation.

I find it to be too much planning on where and how much you can eat.

I'll take concierge over dining plan any day. All my fluids are covered. Water, tea, soda, milk, coffee, hot chocolate, juice and an added bonus, snacks and wine before we head out for dinner. Plus a few perks too!

Wew haven't used the plan yet, but one of my main reasons to use it is to know that we have paid upfront for our meals and we don't have to worry about how much we spend and worry about working out tips etc. i know it sounds a lot of food but we do eat a fair few of the buffet style restaurants and at some of the a la carte we will share meals and save the credits for an extra character breakfast or something. No we do not eat all that food at home but we will be on vacation so why not treat ourselves. However it does not work for everyone and i'm sorry it didn't work for you

We used the dining plan in Sept. when it was free. I totally agree with you, way too much food!! It felt really wasteful to leave so much food not eaten! I don't think I will purchase it in the future.

For someone is doesn't carry credit cards, I also think the dining plan is for me. That way I'm not carrying around extra cash in my pocket.

Also, I plan on using my TS credits at all you can eat places- that way I won't have to worry about all the apps and desserts. I also plan on using 2 TS for a signature experience which technically, gives me less food.

Everyone does not have to order a full meal. Just order a couple and split it with each other, that way you has a few extra to carry over for a 2 credit TS or a breakfast etc. This of course only works at places that are not all you can eat or buffet. We did this in Sept and will do it again this month. We never felt that we were having to take something if it was not wanted. But of course that was Sept. We sinply said no. However by spliting some cs's and some ts's we were never over stuffed and acutally lost weight coming home. :sunny:

I too have felt pressured by the waiter at 2 occasions. We were given pretty obvious hints that we should take full advantage of the plan and order the most expensive dishes on the menu....Was I really in the mood for the most expensive items on the menu? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. This happened at Spoodles and at Wolfgang Puck café.

I am still on the fence as to whether we will go with the plan again when we return. DD will have just turned 10 and I am still wondering if it will be worth it for her.

There is many ways to manage the plan, that we may have to choose our restaurants more carefully. By choosing buffets, one can eat only what they feel like eating without feeling like they are wasting food. I have to agree, it is alot of food!

Sorry it didn't work out for you.
I know it is the best way to go for my family, on our last trip (2 adults, 2 kids) for 7 days we spent between $900-$1000 on food. Our next trip is for 10 nights and the dining plan is costing us around $1100, well worth it. It is not so much that we are big eaters, we like nice resturants (last trip we went to Le Cellier 2x, Cal. Grill) as well as some really fun places (HDDR, 50's PTC) as well as a couple more, none of them I would call inexpensive. I also like to try new things, normally I hesitate because I am afaraid I will spend the money and not like it. With the dining plan I can try new foods and if I really do not like them there is still plenty to eat. For us I think the biggest benifit is now that I have at DS that will be 13 when we go, and really can not (and would not want to) order from the childrens menu. I do not have to stress out when he wants to order a $25-$30 steak (which he will eat, dont worry I do not intend to waist food just because the $$ is not comming directly out of my pocket) everything (for the most part) is paid for and we can just sit back and enjoy the whole experience.

I suppose if I only spent $600-$700 on a family of 5 for 7days (and enjoyed my self) I would skip the dining plan too..

My fiance and I will be using the dining plan in August when we take our honeymoon. Just from what is planned for our TS meals, the plan will be more than paid for! While we may end up with some extra CS meals at the end to use up and take for the trip home, I think the plan will work well for us. Especially since I will have been watching everything I eat to make sure I look good in my wedding dress, I am going to be ALL about splurging! I am a college student with a part time job and my fiance is the manager of a toy store here, so our funds at the time of our honeymoon will be rather short. Therefore, it is nice to know that we will be able to eat these nice meals that we wouldn't be able to even dream of affording normally.

We are a family of 4.....including 2 13 year old girls. We used the plan in December last year and fiqured we saved $350 in food costs. We ate very well and enjoyed every meal. I am planning to use it again on our next trip in November. It really does depend on your eatin habits. We managed to finish all our foods because we skipped breakfasts and ate the counter service for lunch and a late Dinner.

Dh and I will be using the dining plan. I'm an extremely light eater. We plan to pool our credits and share meals. That way we'll have breakfast AND lunch on the CS credits and then we'll pool our TS credits to eat at nicer places such as Le Cellier that we normally couldn't. Individually it wouldn't work out for us but by pooling we spend what we normally would but eat much nicer.

When you eat in a buffet restaurant you don't have to try everything. When you're on the meal plan everyone doesn't have to order, and finish, appetizers and dessert. I think some restaurants have shrunk the portion sizes.

IMHO the shorter your stay the better the meal plan is. Chances are you're going to have a TS meal most days and even the less expensive restaurants tend to break even. I agree on stays of a week or more the dining plan may make less sense if you want to just have CS, or even offsite, meals some days.

Some of the non-Disney restaurants (I think including WGP)base the servers tip on the approximately $20 Disney pays the restaurant for the meal and not on the dollar amount of the food you consume.

my BF and I will be using the dining plan for the first time in a few days....I love the idea of not worrying how much I'm spending on the meals, did we bring enough money, which charge card do I put the diffference on?

whether or not we were using the plan, I normally would not "clean " my plate....so whether I pay out of pocket or use the dining plan, there would be food left over. we are not big dessert folks so I plan on taking those to go or I liked another idea posted here - give the desserts to another table...

I'm most excited because we will be eating at places like Le Cellier, Coral Reef, Wolfgangs and Boatwrights....thanks to these boards, I've learned about the restaurants, ADR's, and so on....

without the dining plan, I would never eat at many of these establishments so for us, it's a huge bonus...and prepaid to boot!

I have to agree with the original poster. I have have used the vouchers in the past and found yes i saved money but ordered thing i normally would not have. As for cost savings if figure in AP rate on the room and DDE discount YO
