"Stonewall Uprising" on The American Experience on PBS.

I've read a number of books and have seen a number of movies about the Stonewall riots (or uprising), but this documentary really brought the story home to me in a whole new way. I will never take the freedoms that I enjoy today for granted again, and will fight even harder for the equal rights that we all deserve.

Every person who cares about the struggle for gay rights should know about our history and how it all began, and what life was like before. If you haven't done so yet, please watch this. It will change how you feel about yourself and the world. You can see the trailer or stream the movie over the internet from this site:

It amazes me how many people these days have never heard of Stonewall. Newer generations are losing sight of our history.

My partner and I watched it. It was very interesting and we both learned a lot. I also was surprised that Judy Garland's death wasn't mentioned. I had always heard her death sparked things, but a lot had been happening in NYC leading up to the riots. I would love to see and extended version with more interviews. I am glad they documented so much with first person accounts.

I am 38, did well in school, have always loved history, etc--and yet I did not hear about Stonewall until in the last couple of years. It seems to be anywhere except in the forefront:sad2:--hopefully that is changing now. I can make sure at least my kids know about that piece of history now that I do.

Thanks for the link:thumbsup2--a quick try shows that, unlike many other links, this one WILL play in Germany. I will have to watch it tonight--and depending on how it is presented might well watch it with the kids (they are 12 and 14, not little ones) later in the week.

Thank you Donald.

I've been trying to track down this doc. Will watch it online on the PBS site.

Her death didn't "spark" things, per se. Crowds in the gay bars were larger than usual that night because of her death, but it wasn't a direct precipitant. It was mostly a matter of the police deciding to conduct a raid on a bar which had reached a critical mass of people who were already upset - and therefore decided to fight back. It was more-or-less a "perfect storm" kind of situation.
