This song was inspired by one of Robert Smith's favorite books of the same name by Penelope Farmer. It's about a girl named Charlotte, who ends up going back 40 years in time and trades places with someone named Claire every night. The two girls never meet but communicate through written means. Charlotte gets stuck in the past and struggles to maintain her identity and return to her own time.
