Music question for past and future Escape Brides (and all others wishing to share)...

So....everyone is picking their song...(which I love hearing about!)

But I have a question...with Escape brides, since we only get a violinist....(unless we pay for extra)....

Don't you find that your song (say for first dance or whatnot) has to be recognizable without lyrics?

The song we really wanted them to play is a song by Billy Bragg called The Boy Done Good or Flowers in the Window by Travis...

BUT....it's the lyrics that make those songs so us...so with only a violin....it would be silly, plus our families don't really know those songs, so...especially without the lyrics...I just don't think it will work..

So, that's why we decided (so far) to go with God Only Knows by The Beach Boys for our first dance and All You Need is Love by The Beatles for our cake cutting, because at least everyone knows the music of those....

So, I guess what I want to know is...most of you posting about your song I'm assuming are Wishes brides because you will be having some sort of music at your reception with dancing etc.?

What about Escape Brides? Am I thinking correctly do all of you think? (with just the violinist to work with I mean?) What did you guys (gals) do?

Anybody have any thoughts/help/ideas etc.?

Thanks all!

Lori

Not an escape bride, but a music junkie so I'll try to help. :goodvibes

I'm going down the aisle to "At My Most Beautiful" by R.E.M. and our exit song is "Answer" by Sarah McLachlan. Those are "our" songs. I didn't want to use a song that wasn't "us". Now those two songs are not going to be known by our families, so what we're doing is putting the lyrics in the program so people can understand why we chose these two, because like yours, it's the lyrics that give it meaning. I bought sheet music for piano and violin as that's what we're going to have at the ceremony. I really think it's no different than having classical music - it's the music itself that has to sound good.

In your situation, maybe you could do something similar. You know during your first dance your guests are going to be ogling you and talking between themselves saying "oh what a beautiful bride and groom - they'll be so happy together" and generally talking about the ceremony. At least that's been the practice at weddings I've been to.

To sum it up - I'm in favor of you using the songs that you want to. As much as I like "God Only Knows" and "All you Need is Love", I think the first song is a very personal choice - it's "your" song for the rest of your lives, not your guests. And if you didn't want the violinist to play it, could you get an IPOD setup with speakers or somesort?

Yes! You can rent a sound system with CD player or iPod from Disney (with or without spendy sound technician), OR, what a lot of couples do, bring your own battery-operated "boombox" (as we used to call 'em) for someone in your group to operate.

I know of several brides who did this, and it worked great! :thumbsup2

For me, it had to be the original music, not an instrumental version. :)

No - that's the caveat. If you bring your own system, it has to be battery-operated. Hoever, they make many great-sounding portable sound systems for the iPod these days. I think I got ours for about $40 on Amazon! (Not that we used it at the ceremony, but we listened to it in our hotel room...)

If you bring the battery operated system, do you have to pay DFTW anything, so long as you have someone operate it?

Nope - no need to pay DFTW. You just need to be sure someone in your group can operate it, since they won't take responsibility for it (although some planners have gone above and beyond and run the music, this is not standard practice).

Ok, can you provide your own boombox (used to call them that too) at any location or just certain ones?

I am just freaked out about the music anyways. I am worried something will get played at the wrong part of the ceremony and I will go all bridezilla...:scared1:

The thing is....if you bring your own music, what about the violinist that is included? They don't substitute anything like they do with the photography....I mean, it seems like a waste not to use them......

This is why this is more of an Escape bride question I guess?:confused3

sigh

:rotfl2: I feel the same way! That might be enough to send me over the edge...

I think that if we do this we will just use the Ipod and our speakers for our first dance, as we need the words to do the dance DF wants to. I will use the violin for the entire ceremony and probably for most of the dancing. I thought about the Ipod for our ceremony, but I know it would get screwed up and I would go nuts!

Lori you can still use your violinist for the ceremony music and music after the ceremony. He plays the whole time. if you don't want him to play your wedding song that will be fine...use your boombox or whatever and then have him continue to play after that.

Can I quote myself...:rotfl:

I forgot to ask, can you provide your own music if you are a Wishes wedding or is this only for Escape weddings?

Yes, you can provide your own music at Wishes Weddings. We did all our own music for both ceremony and reception.

I also was extremely nervous about the sound tech playing the songs right, since I'd heard a horror story about them skipping another bride's unity candle song and then playing it instead of the recessional. So I didn't put any music for during the ceremony - just before and after.

A few minutes before the ceremony, the sound tech came over and double checked the order of the songs with me - I was so grateful! :goodvibes

As I'm having an at home reception, we are saving our special first dance for that, which is Gavin DeGraw (I'm Gonna Love You More Than Anyone). For this we need the lyrics.

For the Disney ceremony we're going to have the violinist play Beauty and the Beast because it is so beautiful and recognisable, plus its perfect for the violin. It also means no lyrics are implying that DF is a beast, lol!

Ok, I still didn't ask that right. Do you have to have a tech guy do it for you and rent Disney's equipment for both ceremony and reception if a Wishes bride?

In my BEO, it says one cd audio system @ $800 for the ceremony. There is no mention of a tech guy. If I have to appoint someone to run this, I can provide my own for ALOT cheaper.

For the reception, I have one mp3 support package @ $250. I know I have to appoint someone for that so I can definitely provide my own, if allowed.

The ceremony is in Italy and reception is at the Attic for reference.:thanks:

If you're paying $800, you should be getting a tech. It should say something like "audio package" in your price list, and in your BEO there's a box for AV and Technical Services that says "(1) Audio Package" and lists the microphones, speakers, mixer, CD player and technician.

Correct - $250 means no tech is included and you have to appoint a guest to do it.

But can I scratch Disney's audio package and ipod dock and bring my own boombox (not just my own music) for the ceremony and/or reception? This could possibly save me a grand. I am sure it is a no but if escape brides can, why not wishes brides? Is it only at certain locations that you can bring your own boombox? Thanks!
