Music: Once liked it, now find it irritating?

Wonder if there is anyone else out there like me.

I once loved music. Played 3 instruments. Was in several bands. Band was my life. Used radio to fall asleep.

Yet now, I never listen to music. I turn on the radio & have to turn it right off within the first song because it just grates on my nerves. I prefer the quiet.

I've reconnected with so many band members on Facebook and they are all asking me to come back & join them. I haven't touched my instruments in decades.

Weird, huh?

That is a little strange. I can't imagine not listening to music. I like quiet, but not all the time.

there is a book called Musicophilia. The author states that there are people who have amusia, which causes them to hear music as pure noise. They are incapable of hearing an off note played because they all sound off.

I used to like to listen to music and now I don't. I hate having the radio on in the car. I don't like noise in general. I thought maybe I was just getting old and grumpy.

Yeah, someone like me.
We are not old or grumpy.

I started with my first pregnancy...made me anxious. Then came the kids talking CONSTANTLY and all I craved is quiet. Now, I listen only to NPR mostly talk. I can handle small amounts of clasical music or even Christmas music but rarely do I listen to more than one single pop song. Thank good ness for books on CD.

Can't imagine it. I crave listening to music. My DD is the same way. Can't go very long with some kind of music. It sooths me and helps my moods. If I'm anxious, slow calm music calms me down. If I'm tired and blah, upbeat music lifts my mood and spirits.

I'm finding that the older I get the more I like peace and quiet.

I do still listen to music, but at a soft level, and my tastes in music have changed over the past few years. I am starting to like 40's stuff and never did before. :)

But I love quiet. A lot of times I will turn the TV off if I am here alone. I don't need it for the noise. Quiet is nice.

I'm less tolerant of small children that scream and holler. I'm less tolerant of noise in the theater. I can't stand to hear a barking dog for more than 30 seconds. On and on....

What can I say? I'm getting old and ornery!!

I'm a music junkie. The only problem I have is if I'm supposed to be working, music is distracting because I'd much rather pay attention to the song than the job.:)

I kind of go through phases like that, where I'll listen to nothing but music for months on end and then will switch and listen to something like talk radio or sports or whatever (non-music) in the car for a month or more. Then I go back to music.

I've definitely grown out of certain types of music... Like I used to listen to hard-core punk music in high school, but that stuff sounds awful to me now...

I can't imagine ever NOT listening to music. I listen at work, at home and in the car. I suffer from Tinnitus and the music helps to mask the background sounds.

I'm not a music person. I don't mind it as background *noise* but I do not want to shout over it to talk to someone that is standing next to me.

I go through phases. Sometimes I'd far rather listen to talk radio in the car than music. I just find it more interesting than a song I've heard hundreds of times.

I get that way sometimes, too. I never listen to music in the car anymore, and when my husband turns it on, it annoys me. He has to have music on or he goes crazy. He likes to have it playing at home all the time, too. I love music, but I just dont listen to it as much as I used to.

You sound so much like me...I'm 45 and I love the 40's music but I love to listen to Nat King Cole the best.

I don't want to be in crowds and I just can't stand to hear screaming kids. I think I can turn green just like the Hulk it makes me so angry. I do set on the DIS boards with no TV or music on, I love it!

Loud noises have always bothered me, so while I can enjoy music from time to time, I can go weeks without listening to it. Friends who live out-of-town play music constantly and after spending a weekend at their house, I am glad to come home and get some quiet time.

I am musical and I've always thought that's why I have a hard time considering music "background." I get too involved in the rhythms etc. and it distracts me from doing anything else. I do listen in the car when I am alone, but I have to be careful not to speed up/slow down etc.

I'm the same way! Sometimes I'll get into a slump where no music pleases me, and I'll turn the radio off.
