MUSH! Going to Alaska - August 19, 2013 7 Night from Vancouver

I am also new to this thread so bare with me as I try and understand the hyphenated words like FE if someone can help me through a tutorial :)

We are going to be on the Wonder on Aug 19 as well. Just booked my airfare today. Coming from NJ, it will be myself, DW, and 2 DDs, both will be 10 years old.

It's our 3rd disney cruise, but first time to Alaska and first time on a 7-day. Still looking for a hotel in Vancouver for pre and post cruise. Going to check priceline now...

let us know what kinds of deals you find btw my daughter will be 11 at the time of the cruise we should introduce our children to eachother when we are on the cruise...we will be on the 6th floor...

:welcome: skater69 and PMcFad!!

I think our girls should all get together! Mine will be 10 and 12 at cruise time!
We're in cabin 6108 so hopefully we'll get to cross paths!

I can explain FE to you- Fish Extender - Outside the cabin door there is a fish that serves as a little mailbox. It has an opening at the top for mail/notices etc to be placed. We can hang a pocket pouch, bag or something from it and it's called a Fish Extender. Then if we get a group together, we can exchange little surprise gifts by putting them in the pockets.
Some people make them (the FE), others use a bag. When we went on a December cruise, I hung a stocking for ours. Then we had one made by a crafter/seller on Etsy. It's really cute! I might have a picture I can post to show you.

Here's our Fish Extender

Here's a door (not ours) on the Dream so you can see the fish on the side.

I am also on this cruise :cool1: hope to get to know some of you all before the trip. we are on deck 6 ..I have a 10 year old girl and my fiance and hopefully his teenage son who will be 16. I have a question does anyone know what to pack as far as clothing for this trip?

I'll take a stab at clothing suggestions...

The absolute warmest temperature you're likely to encounter will be 80 - and that's only while in southern Canadian waters. More likely, daytime temps will be in the 60s, with a chance they'll be in the 50s. There's a chance it'll rain.

Also keep in mind what might be required for any excursions you'd like to take. If you're going to be hiking on the Mendenhall Glacier, you might want extra-warm layers. If you're going to do any other 'adventure-type" excursions, such as sea kayaking or mountain biking, you'd want to bring whatever specific clothing you use for those activities - especially if you or anyone in your party is an unusual size - as the outfitters might not have whatever is necessary in your non-standard size.

I'm of the mind that it's better to bring layers you don't use than to wish you had layers you'd left at home. As a family of Seattle-area skiers/sea kayakers/hikers/climbers/campers/motorcyclists/etc., we'll be bringing a lot of our fleece and Gore-Tex layers, including warm and waterproof hats and gloves.

There's a fairly good chance it'll be cool and misty - if not raining - as we cruise through Glacier Bay. If you plan on staying up on deck taking in the spectacular sights, you're going to want warm and waterproof layers.

We'll always remember the vision of unprepared passengers on a prior Alaska cruise wrapping multiple blankets around themselves as they tried to make up for not having warm enough clothes for an adventure in a cool maritime temperate rain forest.

Luckily, we don't have to fly to meet the ship in Vancouver - it's only a three-hour drive for us, so we can bring all the suitcases stuffed with fleece and Gore-Tex we want!

See you aboard!

I'm fairly certain there is a 'Pirate Night' on the Alaska cruises, as we heard it mentioned that Alaska environmental regulations prohibit the use of fireworks in state waters. Thus, DCL Alaska cruise 'Pirate Nights' are 'sans-fireworks'.

Of course, it won't be 'Pirates IN the Caribbean', like it is on Caribbean cruises :)

On our last Alaska cruise in 2011 it was pretty pathetic. Too cold to enjoy it, too light and no fireworks. I will give this one a miss.

Maybe there will be a good movie showing instead! Wonder what's being released this summer that would be on board?

We just booked our night before the cruise at Pan Pacific. DH said it was tough - nothing available when he tried direct or through Expedia. Got a room with using Orbitz. Pretty pricey I think, but that's where he wanted to stay and we have something booked. Now I need to find out how much they'll charge us for parking the car there for a week! I thought I saw something about a daily rate on the website. Anyone know if I can leave it there during the cruise? It appears to be the same parking facility since the hotel is at the port.

Been checking on excursions too. Looks like whale watching of some sort in Juneau, lumberjack show in Ketchikan and maybe a White Pass train ride in Skagway, or seeing the sled dogs (not the helicopter/glacier one).

Hi there

We have just booked onto this cruise! It will be our FIRST Disney Cruise! My husband and I will be sailing with our three children (9, 7 and 4) as well as both sets of our parents. There seems to be so much to learn about the activities on the ship as well as the fun little extras (fish extenders!). Has a fish extenders been started and if so how can we join?

I was just coming by to see if anyone had set up a facebook group yet.

I'll set one up this afternoon and come back and post the info to join it.

Can't wait for August!!!

I just sent a bunch of PMs with my info so I can add you the Facebook group. If I missed anyone please let me know. Thanks!

Hi there,

My sister and I will be joining you all on this cruise. I was originally scheduled for the Sept 2 sailing, but we switched to this one.

This will be my 7th Disney cruise and my sister's first! I'm introducing her to the wonderful world of Disney Cruise Line. :rotfl:

I don't use Facebook so I'm hoping a lot of the group planning is kept here on the DIS or at least updated here as well. And with only 6 months to go, it's definitely time to start planning! I'm really looking forward to some of the first Alaska cruisers this year reporting back about how things are being done this year.

I am looking forward to that as well! I want to know for sure what night pirate night is etc. Would like to book Palo on a different night.
They still do Palo brunch on this cruise, right? I sure hope so!
