Hi,
We are heading out in 24 short days! I was wondering if any of you would share what your sons use to hold their stuff when at the parks. My son wouldn't have much other than some Chapstick, a waterbottle and a clip on small mister fan. I'm hoping to lessen my own load by having them each carry at least their water. Easy to find a cute bag for my daughter, but I'm having a hard time finding something crossbody that will work for my son and that he will think is cool. He will be 5.

I'm not sure about little boys but I know medium boys have cargo pants (I know this because women don't so I wear boys). He could put the chapstick in a pocket and slip a water bottle in a holder and clip that on one side of his pants and the mister fan on the other. Alternatively, you could skip the water bottle and just get free water from the QS locations, that way no one has to carry one.

I would look for a one shouldered backpack if you are really looking for a crossbody option.

I think I would choose a cheap string backpack though, because then if it gets lost/left somewhere it wont be as big of a deal.

In all honesty though, I would just buy some small reusable water bottles and pack them in your bag empty. Then just fill them at the QS locations. I wouldn't want to try to keep track of a bag that my 5 yo was supposed to be holding.

DS still uses a small backpack that we bought him when he was around 5. They don't carry the exact same one but this one is pretty close. Small enough for him to carry but big enough for a few things. (Including sunscreen for all of us so that we don't have to carry it!) :)

My son (he's 6) carried a crossbody bag with Mickey ears on it for a while until it got stolen. I think we got it at Walmart for around $10.

When I finally got tired of carrying everyone's stuff, I bought crossbody/hip packs that were big enough to carry a small snack and a water bottle. Boys were preteen at the time, so we went with a black canvas type. After getting over the initial shock that they had to carry their own stuff and hip packs aren't "cool", it worked out fine. Hands free; didn't have to worry about setting them down anywhere and losing them.

I see kids using the cinch bags that come with kids meals at Subway.

All the "cool kids" are using the small string type backpacks...take a look at those, more like a bag with a srting...not nearly as bulky as a backpack...and while some boys may not mind the murse, it certainly has not yet become mainstream.

Please don't make him wear a fanny pack!

My son has to have a day pack for Boy Scouts, and we found a small thin lightweight hiking sling pack, one shoulder, it's like the ripstop material. It's not very big, but perfect for holding a few things one needs for the day, I honestly have no idea where we got it. my husband has an older Eddie Bauer one that is very similar, now that I think about it.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm solidly against the fanny pack and I'm worried that it is going to be hot so a backpack sounds kind of brutal. I think murse is one of the funnies words. My husband winced when I told him that is what I was looking for. It has occurred to me that I probably just need a water bottle holder on a strap. If I end up having to carry it, it won't be much extra.

This is too big for my son, but a pretty cool murse if you need one

I saw some of those one shoulder bags at the Eddie Bauer outlet. They are cute!

We do the string backpack for my son (8yo) I like that's it's less structured so can be smushed to fit on rides.

What about a camelback - I think that's what they're called. The bag that holds water and has a straw to drink through. They make kid sized ones and they will have a pocket to put chapstick in. I don't know how easy these are to fill up, but I imagine that if you put cold water in it, it would keep your child cool for a little while.

The drawstring bags are a big hit for my kids when they don't want to use a heavier backpack.
