Multiple Use Years?

Well, we're considering adding on (again) :rolleyes1.... While I'd prefer to keep our current use year, I'm more concerned about getting a good deal. So, depending on how patient we are, we might move forward with multiple UYs.

For those of you that already have this set up, I have a few questions...

I realize that we would have two membership numbers. Determining when to use which points doesn't really concern me. The tricky part comes in when I'm a few points short for a reservation (here come the questions).
--If I'm a few points short, would I have to transfer points from one account to the other if I didn't want two reservations?
--If so, does that count against your "one transfer/year" limit?
--If I book 7 nights through one account and two more through another, I'm guessing those reservations need to be linked (is that right?)? Does that mean we have to check in twice, get two sets of cards, etc?

Are there other questions I should be asking? :confused3

Thanks in advance!! :goodvibes

We are in the process of closing on our BWV contract that is a different UY.

We decided it would be okay since we bought one a bit bigger, 150 points.

From what I understand, MS is flexible in allowing owners of multiple memberships to do more than one transfer between those memberships. However, I have been told that it would still count in terms of others. So, if you transfer between your own memberships, it would use it up in terms of getting or giving points to someone else.

It is also a different resort so we can't combine points until the 7 month anyway. We figure at that point, we will have a bit more flexibility in what we can do. We bought so we could book rooms for F & W each year and then add two nights each summer to our BLT stay.

We also knew that we would on occasion want to do F & W with friends and family so in those years, will use it for that.

I guess we figured since we will have 150 in one membership and 180 in the other we will treat them pretty much separately!

But, the deal was just too good to pass up. Contracts with our UY did show up right after we made the verbal offer and I even tried to make a deal on it (still in the rescind of the original) but the seller wouldn't budge on price so just want with the great deal.

as one who has 4 UY's...this is the only aspect that's ever (at times) been mildly problematic.

I have a question. You indicate that you are "adding on". Are you looking at a small point contract? If so, I would definitely avoid a different UY if possible.

If you are buying a second significant point contract, then it probably isn't as big of an issue.

When we bought our second contract, through resale, we ended up with a different UY than our original contract. But both contracts are for nearly identical quantity of points.

So it's easy to bank one contract and make reservations with the other (including borrowing if necessary) without worrying about transferring points one to the other.

It works great for us, and hasn't caused any issues.

A couple of questions:
1. How far apart are your use years?
2. If you transfer the unbanked points you can then bank them, correct? (provided you haven't passed the banking deadline)

I understand that the point retain their original use year.

Thanks in advance,
John

One UY is February, the other is October. So not even close.

I believe your are correct, but I'm not the best expert on that. As I indicated, I've never had to transfer points from one contract to the other. I've made all my reservations for the past 8 years from one contract or the other without transferring points. But I think you are right in your description, assuming Disney fixed the glitch about transferred points which used to morph them into the characteristics of the contract they went into.

Yes, you can bank points once they are transferred. With our new contract, we got a Dec UY and our original one is a June UY.

Because we now have 180 in one and 150 in the other--pretty even--I don't think we will have a problem to often.

Since the new BWV contract is for booking a few nights at the front of our summer trip and for Food and Wine, most years we will have enough to just book straight from that contract.

But, there could be some years when we have extra points in the BWV contract because not enough to book something and in those cases, we will simply bank and go from there.

My biggest problem is with the way the Disney changes the policies and rules and they way that they are interpreted and enforced. I no longer trust them to do what is right for it's members and I am concerned that other policies including the UY policy could change at anytime.

We own contracts under 2 use years and as far as I am concerned it's just another headache to deal with and I already have enough. MS tells me a different transfer policy every time I call to transfer. The computer system doesn't track transfered points correctly and when trying to use the transfered points, MS has always had to get a manager involved and even they have problems making the reservation.

Transfered points retain their original UY and they can be banked while banked points can not be transfered.

Are more than one UY doable, sure, but why create more potential problems for yourself if you really don't have to.

We have two different UYs (Feb. And Oct.) at two home resorts (SSR and BWV.). We bought enough BWV points to stay in a two bedroom every year during F&W and will use that contract only for that purpose. We will use the SSR contract(s) for other stays, primarily Jan. and possibly a spring trip. We usually take one of our kids and their family with us, so we need either two separate accommodations or larger accommodations for our stays.
So..basically the BWV points are only for BWV stays and the SSR points are flexible.
