I love the idea of going to wdw a couple times a year but wud have to stay in studios with dh and 2 kids (4 and 2). Is it worth it? Too tight? If we got a 1 bedroom we couldn't go as often. Thoughts?

Depends for me on how much resort time you plan to have. If its just a place to sleep than go for extra trips. If you want a couple days to bum around the room amd resort than one bedroom.

We always stay in a one bedroom because its our vacation home. We get the best of both worlds, a home and a Disney vacation.

We normally get a studio to maximize our pts. We prefer going to Disney more often! We're a family of 4. Our 2 girls are now 9 and 13 and have no problem sharing the sofabed. We're used to normal hotel rooms for other vacations and the only time we're normally in the room is to sleep and have breakfast. We do splurge every 2 years and invite another family with us--that's when we get the 2 bedroom--the other family gets the studio side, we have the 1 bedroom side and we open it up during the day to share the full kitchen and mingle.

For years my family (2 daughters) would stay in a Studio. We preferred the extra trips and with them being relatively small for most of the early years the extra space was not really needed. Of course, things have changed over the years but we still often do multiple studios now rather than 1 BR's. We were not much for hanging in the rooms so it was a place to grab a shower and snooze.

If you can make the multiple trips, I'd say go for that (in the studios). When we first bought DVC (2006) we planned to go about 3 times in 2 years and stay in a 1BR (with our 3 kids). Then, in 2011 we began to get 2BRs since the 3 kids were now teens and that extra space/bathroom was very nice. But, recently, DH and I were talking and came to the realization that we could do 2 studios and save some points (if the studios were next door to each other but they cannot even guarantee that they will be close...until the new Poly DVC plans...yay). We don't use the kitchen except to keep some beverages cold and to have quick breakfasts. Our last trip we flew in and didn't get WeGoShop and we did just fine with getting drinks and breakfast stuff outside our room...we like the idea of grabbing something at Starring Rolls, for example, and having the refillable mugs. It might cost more but we go to WDW to A) eat and B) be out and about doing stuff....we don't go to make meals like we do at home or to clean and do laundry. Though I do like to have the washer and dryer, but we can work around that (our trips are usually short anyway...or we can do laundry in the free laundry room at the resort).

Being able to stay in 1-bedrooms was one of the reasons we joined the DVC. Personally I don't sleep well in the same room as our two kids, and they have never been able to share a bed. We plan to go every year or two and stay in a 1-bedroom that has a sofa bed and sleeper chair. The transportation, food, and ticket costs prohibits us from going more often anyway. Plus we like to travel to non-Disney places, especially now that the kids are 11 and 9.

If I had to always stay in a studio, I'd forego buying DVC and just book a hotel room. Once in a while, maybe. Every trip, never.

We have kids around the same age and we prefer more trips! As the kids get older I'm sure we will do separate studios-two bedroom. But for now... More trips

We prefer a one bedroom. We have actually like a 2 bedroom if daughter brings a friend or we invite another couple.

I would go for more trips! We stayed in studios often in the early years. We would take the kids in the spring and have a parent Sony trip in the fall....both in studios. We knew that there would be plenty of years to get the bigger rooms

Our daughter still naps, so we consider at least a one bedroom absolutely essential. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to put her down in one room and have a second room to relax in.

Even before we traveled with a napper, we preferred to have a 1 bedroom. We would occasionally do a night or two in a studio, particularly if we were adding on an extra night some time after booking our original vacation and knew we'd have to move rooms anyway. A one bedroom just makes for a more relaxing vacation, where we can each have our own space.

If I wanted to only stay in studios, I wouldn't have purchased a timeshare like DVC. To me DVC is having a "HOME AWAY FROM HOME", and if I have to live in a bedroom with only a small kitchenette, it isn't worth it. That would especially be true if I had to share that room with children. Parents and kids deserve time away from each other on vacation. Otherwise, it isn't much of a vacation!

If you have to limit the number of points you buy, then I would opt for a less expensive resort point wise like OKW or one of those who have standard or value rooms like BWV or AKV. Get the "more bang for your buck" with the lower point options instead of going to a "hotel" type room in a studio.

This! Our son not only naps for 2-4 hours in the afternoon, he also goes to bed at 7pm. A studio would be torture for us. We love to be able to be up and relaxing in the living room while our son is snoozing away in the bedroom (so far on an air mattress). Having to be stuck in the room and be silent while our son slept would not be a fun vacation.

with more 2-4 people, at least a 1bdrm DVC villa. with 2 people or solo, studios are perfect (we don't use the jetted tub (yuk) or the amenities of a full kitchen (we've 2 full kitchens at home - don't ask :rolleyes2 - that are rarely used)). with 2 or less, studios are easier to keep clean, and we don't feel guilty about not bringing more people ;)

then again, we tend to book suites on vacations elsewhere when we are more than 2 ppl.

with kids, the laundry, full kitchen, and privacy of a least a 1bdrm are necessities, imho :)

We have airfare at $1500+ for four of us and a ton of places on our bucket list we'd like to go to - we choose to go less often - room size - yeah, it matters, but for us, we simply don't want to go that often or choose to spend the transportation dollars that often.

For now I would choose more trips.
My only advice is don't ever stay in a one bedroom for now.
Once you stay in a one bedroom it's hard to go back to a studio. :rotfl:

The whole reason we purchased DVC was to have the larger room, kitchen etc. So we would rather go for the 1 bedroom.

Though it does really depend on how much down time you plan to have.

The whole point to buy in to DVC for me is to go to Disney more often. I would vote for go more often vs getting bigger room. I am not going to Disney to spend time in the kitchen all day or to clean up the living room or to stay in to watch TV all night. I am there to enjoy the resort amenities like pools, the restaurants, see the animals, to shop or simply people-watch. Studios has mini fridge to store snacks, drinks and breakfast items, microwave oven, toaster and coffee maker to fulfill all my food perpetration need. And if I need to do Landry we have access to multiple washers and driers in the laundry room. We loves being there experience all the stuffs they have to offer, not to hide in the big and empty three bedroom.
