Multiple Contracts

We are in process of acquiring a second contract (as a re-sale). It will be for the same home resort as our existing contract but for a different UY. My understanding is that the two contracts may end up being linked by DVC (or not).

Three Questions:

(1) What are the advantages of having them linked? or not linked? Seems to me that having the contracts linked provides some advantages for booking convenience, particularly under new check-in + 7 booking rules, but does limit us to one transfer in/out (rather than 2) per calendar year. Anything else we should be considering?

(2) What needs to be done (e.g., for closing) to predispose one outcome or the other?

(3) If for some reason the two contracts are not linked by DVC but title is held by the same persons, is it a simple matter to have DVC link the contracts later?

Thanks.

If your contracts have a different Use Year, they will NOT be linked by DVC. DVC will combine contracts with the same Use Year - even if they are different resorts - the critical part is that the Use Years are the same.

In addition, the deeds would need to be titled identically.

The advantage is that the points can easily be combined to make reservations with no need to transfer points between the contracts, but you should have little trouble using the points - even from different Use Years.

We have 4 different Use Years and 2 resorts. There is some extra organization involved to keep track of the banking deadlines, but it is pretty easy to manage.

Enjoy your new contract and don't worry about combining anything. :)

(It appears that the database is still mispositioning responses to posts - sorry for any confusion! :( )

Thanks Doc.

I'd read some of the earlier posts (by you and Dean) on topic, but the same UY thing hadn't jumped out at me. Got it now; thanks.

... and agreed on DVC Planner. Most Excellent! I'll have to try the Point Tracker.

If you don't have enough points in one contract to make your reservation, you'll have to use your once a year transfer to transfer points from one to the other (you'll use the once a year transfer for both contracts).

Thanks Doc.

You might take a look at Caskbill's (Most Excellent) DVC Planner and his (also Most Excellent) DVC Point Tracker.

They are free programs that really do a great job of planning DVC travel and may be found at www.caskbill.com .

I learn something new here everyday.

We have 2 contracts and they both have the same use year and are titled the same. If I have them "linked" does that mean I can combine the points? Say I want to stay at the BW and I don't have enough points. Can I now take my SSR points to make up the difference if the contracts were linked???? This sounds too good to be true.

You can combine points from different resorts to book at the 7-month window. You cannot use points from one resort to book at another resort in the 11-month window. So if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is and that is also the case here.

Did you purchase your second contract directly from Disney? If you did, they should already be under the same membership number with the same base contract number but different extensions, for example contract number 123456.000 and 123456.001. If your second contract was purchased on the resale market and DVC set it up under a new membership number, they won't change it.

If you have two different contract numbers (first five numbers, followed by .000), then you have to use the transfer to take points from one to the other. But they still retain the home resort and UY. If the first five numbers are the same, but the suffix (.000 or .001) is different, you have one contract with an add-on.

Thanks Lisa and Deb. Well it turns out I do not have two contracts. I have one contract with an add on. I appreciate your taking the time to explain this to me. ;)

If you have 2 different contracts linked, is there a problem down the road if you wanted to sell one (unlinking)?
Thanks for your help!

There is no problem in selling contracts linked under the same membership number, except for how the points may have been used.

For instance, if you have a 160 point contract and a 100 point add-on, they could be sold separately. But if you used 175 points for a reservation, you would need to see how the points used were divided between the contracts. Sometimes MS depletes the original contract, then rolls to the add-on, and sometimes the opposite, so it could make a difference as to how many points are available at the time of sale.

Other than that, they are legally separate contracts and can be sold separately.
