I just called to make a reservation and was asked for my social security number (last 4 digits). I was told that they are now requiring this when we speak to MS. I asked if there had been problems with people managing to get DVC member numbers and she said yes, and it was from the member's children calling and making ressies under parents contracts. I certainly don't mind...just another security precaution, but I would think that most grown children could manage to get their parents social security number if they could get the DVC member number and had the gall and disrespect to make reservations under false pretense.

It is really sad how close we have to protect our private information these days and how easy it is for it to accessed by dishonest people.

I made a reservation last week and no one asked for my social, maybe this is something they are in the process of implementing??

They asked for mine when I called last week. The funny thing is, I am so used to giving out my husband's because he is usually the primary account holder. I gave out his four digits, and she said she needed mine, because it was I she was talking to. OOPS. LOL

I laughed and told her I knew my husband's SS number better than my own!

It is not big deal to me that they ask for it. It is not like I have to go looking for my SS card. It is just 4 numbers I can rattle off.

It doesn't make sense to me though, the security reasons. If someone can get ahold of someone else's member ID, than that person is probably close enough to the memeber to be able to access their SS number.

Any sense that the MS person only has the last 4 digits of your SS#? Or, are they looking at the entire identifier?

I think this is good. If you lose your card and don't realize it anybody good book a trip otherwise.

It is rare a give a compliment to DVC but nice job on this one.

I called MS on Monday morning this week. They also asked me for my last 4 SS# digits. I said nope, I don't give that out. She looked at my account and noticed that they do not have record of it. She asked me to verify with my address. Next day, verify with address, and today, verify with phone number.

I think it is good that they are verifying with something, it just doesn't HAVE to be your SSN.

I finished a 6 night day by day reservation on Monday, I think they asked me for the last 4 numbers 5 of the 6 times. They should come up with another kind of "pin". Alot of companies are phasing out the use of ss#'s as an ID, like health insurance, etc. About 3 months ago at work they finally changed using our ss#'s when signing onto the company systems.

I agree that a pin number would be much better. I think I will suggest that next time...maybe we all should.

I called last week to request changing our 2BR ressies from dedicated to lockoff (had to waitlist) and was asked for last four digits of SS#.

I made reservations today and was not asked for SS #. They did ask for my address though.

I think it's a good idea for a while. Like everythig else, if anyone wants to use it/abuse it - they catch on.

The last two purchases on my cc over the phone, I was also asked to provide the four numbers by my signature. Who is to stop them from using it when they have all my info. It's happened before.

I disagree. I don't need another number to remember. The last four digits of the SS# is no big deal to me. Sounds like we have a poll in the making here.

I disagree.

Regardless of who books the trip, the confirmation is mailed to the owner, so fraud in this aspect is quite unlikely.

Personally, I have a tough time with MS adding another variable to the process because some member's child booked a ressie without the member's permission.

CNRobin,

The US Mail has been known to fail on delivering items in the past and present. In fact I have not received initially 33% of my confirmations. I have had to call DVC to get them resent or faxed.

I applaud the effort but the SSN is no the way to do it. I can live with the last four though.

I'm being asked for it on a regular basis as well. I thought someone else was told it was part of DVC's Privacy Policy.
